Akwa Ibom State Secondary Education Board Chairman Charges Schools Ahead of New Session

The Executive Chairman, State Secondary Education Board, Dr. Ekaette Ebong Okon, has directed all principals to ensure that teachers begin teaching immediately as the 2021/2022 academic year begins. The Board Chairman gave this directive yesterday at Community Secondary Commercial School, Ikot Okubo Offot while embarking on an on-the-spot monitoring of resumption of schools and the conduct of the Senior Schools Certificate Examinations. The Chairman expressed displeasure at the condition of the school environment which was very unkempt and called on all principals of schools to deploy all possible measures to get their school premises conducive for learning within days. At Community Secondary Commercial School, Ikot Oku Ikono, Dr. Ebong Okon charged candidates to be of their best behaviour and dress like students even though they are writing their exit examinations. She also led the team to Community Secondary Commercial School, Four Towns, where she expressed satisfaction at the smooth running of the Senior Certificate Examination and the orderly conduct of the candidates. She commended the candidates for observing the Covid-19 safety protocol by being properly kitted with their facemasks and urged the candidates to shun all forms of examination malpractices and be independent in all their examinations. Another Monitoring Team of the Board led by the Director, Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr. Joseph Eton, visited Secondary School, Etoi, Christian Secondary Commercial School, and Uyo High School, Uyo where the examination atmosphere was peaceful and teachers and students also resumed for the new academic session. The Board directed principals to query staff who were absent from school without genuine reasons. The Teams comprised all the Board Members, the Acting Permanent Secretary, all the Directors and some senior staff of the Board.

Akwa Ibom Assembly Passes Anti-Grazing Bill into Law

A Bill for a Law to prohibit open rearing and grazing of livestock and provide for the establishment of ranches in Akwa Ibom State, has been passed into law by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. This is sequel to a report of the Joint House Committees on Agriculture and Natural Resources, as well as Lands and Housing presented at Plenary on Tuesday. Presenting the Committees’ Report, Hon. Asuquo Udo observed that the passage of the Bill into Law will promote modern techniques of animal husbandry, prevent the destruction of farms, while also reducing clashes and killings between herders and farmers in the state. “The Bill will promote international best practices in livestock administration, regulation and control in the state, among other things”, he added. He revealed that copies of the Bill were sent to relevant stakeholders, from who inputs were solicited and obtained through a memoranda submitted to the Committee at the Public Hearing. “Copies of the Bill were sent to the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Civil Society groups, Cattle Dealers Association, Arewa Community, Igbo Community, Yoruba Community in Akwa Ibom State and other stakeholders. Inputs from stakeholders were solicited and obtained through memoranda submitted at the Public Hearing”, he added. After considering the report at the Committee of the Whole, the House passed the Bill into Law, with Tuesday, September 14, 2021 as its commencement date. In his remarks, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, directed the Clerk, Mrs Mandu Umoren to communicate the decision of the House to the appropriate authorities. Also at the plenary, the House resolved a Motion on Revamping Of Ikot Abasi Fish Farm and Hatchery Complex, brought by the Member representing Ikot Abasi State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Uduak Odudoh. In the meantime, the House has adjourned its plenary to Thursday, September 16, 2021 at 10am.

Akwa Ibom State Police Arrest Gun-making Welder in Uyo

News filtered fast as the Akwa Ibom State Police Command said it had arrested one Ekike Hector David, an indigene of Mbiokporo 1 in Nsit Ibom Local government area of the State for alleged illegal manufacturing of AK47 rifles and other types of guns. The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko Macdon, who disclosed this in a press statement in Uyo, the State capital, said upon the suspect’s arrest, the items recovered from him included: eight (8) locally fabricated AK47 Rifles, one (1) Pump Action, one (1) pistol and six (6) dane guns. He said the suspect, who is a welder, allegedly fabricates and sells those guns to criminals who use them to rob and terrorize innocent Citizens of the State. The statement in parts read, “On the 13th of September, 2021, at about 1pm, Surveillance Team of ‘A’ Division located at Barracks Road, while on routine stop and search operation to stem criminal activities along Uyo Village Road and environs, arrested one Ekike Hector David of Mbiokporo 1 in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area with eight (8) locally fabricated AK47 Rifles, one (1) Pump Action, one (1) pistol and six (6) Dane Guns. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is a welder who specializes in making and selling locally made rifles and other types of guns to criminal elements who use same in terrorising innocent members of the public.” He added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Amiengheme Andy had ordered discreet investigation into the crime and manhunt for the persons who patronize the suspect. He said that the command would continue to protect the people, as well as flush out criminal elements in the State. Some Friends and relatives of the suspect however have taken to popular Social Media platform Facebook to defend Ekike Hector David with claims that He is a filmmaker who produced the guns as props for a Movie.

Member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Honorable VICTOR EKWERE has called on relevant agencies to wade into the communal clash between Ikot Ebak in Mkpat Enin and Ediene Atai in Oruk Anam local government areas. EKWERE’s appeal was contained in a matter of urgent public importance he brought before the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly at Tuesday’s plenary. He observed that the crisis has snowballed into full scale armed robbery, kidnapping and killing of innocent persons. Honorable EKWERE further presented a motion on an urgent need to decongest Ikot Ekpene road- Ikpa road roundabout and other locations in Uyo metropolis
