Akwa Ibom Assembly Passes Anti-Grazing Bill into Law

A Bill for a Law to prohibit open rearing and grazing of livestock and provide for the establishment of ranches in Akwa Ibom State, has been passed into law by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. This is sequel to a report of the Joint House Committees on Agriculture and Natural Resources, as well as Lands and Housing presented at Plenary on Tuesday. Presenting the Committees’ Report, Hon. Asuquo Udo observed that the passage of the Bill into Law will promote modern techniques of animal husbandry, prevent the destruction of farms, while also reducing clashes and killings between herders and farmers in the state. “The Bill will promote international best practices in livestock administration, regulation and control in the state, among other things”, he added. He revealed that copies of the Bill were sent to relevant stakeholders, from who inputs were solicited and obtained through a memoranda submitted to the Committee at the Public Hearing. “Copies of the Bill were sent to the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Civil Society groups, Cattle Dealers Association, Arewa Community, Igbo Community, Yoruba Community in Akwa Ibom State and other stakeholders. Inputs from stakeholders were solicited and obtained through memoranda submitted at the Public Hearing”, he added. After considering the report at the Committee of the Whole, the House passed the Bill into Law, with Tuesday, September 14, 2021 as its commencement date. In his remarks, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, directed the Clerk, Mrs Mandu Umoren to communicate the decision of the House to the appropriate authorities. Also at the plenary, the House resolved a Motion on Revamping Of Ikot Abasi Fish Farm and Hatchery Complex, brought by the Member representing Ikot Abasi State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Uduak Odudoh. In the meantime, the House has adjourned its plenary to Thursday, September 16, 2021 at 10am.

Sports Ministry Releases Guidelines for Federation Elections

The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development headed by Sunday Akin Dare has released a breakdown of the Sports Federation elections timetable, enable all participants prepare towards the forthcoming elections. As stated in the Guidelines, 1. Nomination forms will be released on September 15, and completed forms should be submitted on September 17 2021. 2. The election of all representatives from constituencies, except Zonal Reps are expected to be concluded on September 21, 2021. 3. The Zonal Representatives Election will be held on 22 September, 2021. 4. Appeal therefrom will be heard on September 25, 2021. 5. Bye elections from the Appeal (If Any) will be conducted on September 28, 2021. 6. The National Elections are scheduled to take place on September 30, 2021 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja . 7. The hearing of any petition arising from the election will be on October 4, 2021. 8. Bye Elections from the Appeal (If Any) will take place on 6th October. 9. All duly elected boards of the Federations will be sworn in by the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare in Abuja on October 8, 2021.   Meanwhile, all constituted Caretaker Committees of the affected Federations are to be dissolved a week before the election.

Nabi blamed the defeat on poor pre-season preparations, saying they did not have enough time to prepare for the game. He also had no kind words for his charges for failing to utilize the plenty of scoring opportunities they created. Both gaffers expect a tougher second leg when the two sides clash on September 19 in Nigeria, knowing that a spot in the 2nd round of qualifiers will be at stake.

FAMILY OF SLAIN KUBIAT AKPAN SEEK JUSTICE FOR SON.

The Family of KUBIAT ISAAC AKPAN, the 28-year old graduate of Architecture in the University of Uyo, who was allegedly arrested, tortured and gruesomely murdered by the police, is demanding justice for their son. Briefing the press in Uyo, the lawyer handling the case, Barrister INIBEHE EFFIONG explained that KUBIAT was not sick, had no underlying illness, was not a cultist and was not being investigated for any crime. Corroborating this, the deceased’s uncle, Mr. ENE INYANG, who noted that his slain nephew was the only male child of the parents, who are currently very sick, also stressed that he was a good boy and did not indulge in any criminal activity. Barrister INIBEHE EFFIONG disclosed that autopsy carried out revealed that KUBIAT was tortured to death.
