Akwa Ibom State Police Command Investigating Death on Banking Layout

The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom state command, Olatoye Durosinmi, has ordered an investigation into the death of an unidentified woman said to have been beheaded by some unknown assailants on Sunday. The incident occurred around the banking layout area, on Udo Udoma Avenue in Uyo; the state capital where the deceased had lived and farmed before she met her death. The Public Relations Officer of Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Odiko Macdon, confirmed the incident noting that the identity of the victim was yet to be ascertained, and that the Force was doing everything possible to solve the case. The PPRO said that the Akwa State CP, Durosinmi, had ordered an immediate investigation into the incident which he said is being conducted discreetly. He said, “In no distant time, we will get to know what transpired and fish out the perpetrators”.

Nigeria Guild of Editors Hail Governor Umo Eno on ARISE Dividends

The Nigeria Guild of Editors said on Tuesday it was closely following the ARISE agenda of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, saying it had started yielding the targeted dividends. The NGE President, Mr Eze Anaba, stated this at the Government House during a courtesy visit to the governor ahead of the 19th All Nigerian Editors Conference, scheduled to hold from November 15 to 19, 2013. While thanking the governor for accepting to host the guild in the state, Anaba lauded the continuum in the government of Akwa Ibom, adding that the development strides of successive governments and the peaceful ambience have undoubtedly made the state a choice destination for all, as demonstrated in the unprecedented number of delegates to the 2023 ANEC. “We’ve been following your ARISE Agenda, and Akwa Ibom seems to be the only state in Nigeria where there is a continuum in government, and in terms of governance, the government of Akwa Ibom has produced enough for the citizenry.
“So it is now for the people to know what to do with the good governance they’re enjoying,” Anaba said. Responding, the governor charged the guild to uphold the integrity of the profession by striving to maintain objectivity in their reporting. Eno also advocated a free press, where journalists can praise, criticise, comment, and advise where necessary without undermining the ethics of the profession, and tasked journalists with being conscious of their sacred responsibility of shaping people’s orientation and social order and being the conscience of society. In the Nigerian Guild of Editors delegation were: Deputy President Husseina Bangshika; Vice President (East), Sheddy Ozoene; Vice President (West), Kabir Alabi; Vice President (North), Umoru Ibrahim; General Secretary, Iyobosa Uwugiaren; Assistant General Secretary, Gabriel Akinadewo; Treasurer, Steve Nwosu; and Charles Kalu, Social and Publicity Secretary, Samuel Enobong Akpan, GM Inspiration FM among others.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation Advocates Provision of Sanitary Pad Banks in Schools

The Akwa Ibom State commissioner for women Affairs and social welfare, Dr INI ADIAKPAN has stated that the girl child is very important in the society, describing her as the mother of the future. She made this statement during her presentation as the special guest of honour in an event organized by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF). ADIAKPAN commended AHF for implementing and supporting the projects, noting that the sensitization programme has underscored the value of the girl child in the society.     She urged the children to take advantage of the opportunity to learn skills and be motivated to become better citizens of the society in spite of the challenges they face. The two-day programme which highlighted the theme; Amplify Her Voice” was organised for students of The Model Secondary School, Aka Offot, Uyo to commemorate the International Day of the girl child. On his part, the AHF Advocacy and Marketing Manager, Mr STEVE ABORISHADE said as part of efforts to sustain the development and follow-up the outcome, a sanitary club as well as a sanitary pad bank will be provided for every girl in the school to maintain effective menstrual hygiene.     The commissioner for Information and strategy, Comrade INI EMEMOBONG who was represented by a Director in the ministry, Mrs. EUNICE EGHAREVBA charged the girls to prioritize capacity building, adding that a girl is worthy to be heard when she has something to say. Highlight of the programme was the distribution of packs of sanitary towels to all the girl students who were participants at the programme.

Project Alert Takes Sexual Violence Education to Schools

Meanwhile, students in Akwa Ibom State have been charged to join the fight against sexual violence in their schools and communities. This was during a sensitization campaign implemented by Project Alert and sponsored by African Women’s Development Fund in collaboration with Akwa Ibom State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee and other development partners.  The programme which was targeted at educating the students on the concepts, forms and impacts of sexual violence took place earlier today at Cardinal Ekandem Seminary and Adiaha Obong Secondary Commercial School, Uyo. One of the facilitators at the event and Consultant at Project Alert, Dr ANIEFIOK UKOMMI stressed the need to engage the young people in schools to get them ready to protect those vulnerable to sexual violence, in his presentation defined Sexual Violence as any violent act that is targeted at the sexuality of a person which may cause psychological or physical pain. Dr UKOMMI also stated some forms of sexual violence, urging the students to watch out for these indicators as they engage in their various communities. The programme officer, Project Alert on Violence against Women, NSINI UDONTA said that sensitization is necessitated by the outcome of their research in 2021on the impacts of sexual violence academic institutions in Cross River and Akwa Ibom state. On her part, the secretary of Akwa Ibom State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee, Barr EMEM ETTEH expressed delight at the students’ response to the programme. She also stated the objectives of the programme. The students who participated in the programme expressed their gratitude to the organizers while promising to spread the message to their fellow students and in their communities.   At the end of the event, clubs were set up to foster the course of the project.
