NSCDC Uncovers Another Illegal Refinery in Rivers State

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad has uncovered another illegal oil refining site at a forest in Odagwa Community in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State. The bunkering site had 10 illegal refineries with an estimated 500,000 litres of crude oil contained in about 50 illegally constructed reservoirs, while five suspects engaging in the illicit act were arrested. The spokesman for the NSCDC, Rivers State Command, Olufemi Ayodele, disclosed this while parading the suspects and conducted newsmen around the site on Monday. Ayodele said the discovery was based on credible intelligence. He said, “The Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Dr Ahmed Audi, has reiterated over time that all acts of economic sabotage would be fought to a standstill as suspects arrested would face the full wrath of the law, irrespective of their sponsors. “In furtherance, the CG gave a marching order to the Special Intelligence Squad, charging them to be more thorough and results-oriented in their operations “Based on credible intelligence, the CG’s SIS swung into action and uncovered 10 illegal local refineries in a forest located at Odagwa Community in Etche LGA of Rivers State where five suspects were caught in the act of illegally refining of crude oil. “While conducting an operational tour across the large thick forest, about 10 different cooking pots of 50,000 litres capacity were seen with one big pumping machine, receiver tanks, 25 rubber hoses used for pumping crude oil and many long galvanised pipes with unquantified litres of crude oil and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) stored in six large reservoirs and other 20 smaller reservoirs drugged in the ground.” The suspects include Favour Chukwu, 29; Desmond Umeh. 25; Godwin Amos, 22; Bineace Galion, 38; and Goodnews David, 23.

Governor Umo Eno Calls for Collaborations Between South-South Governors

Governor of Akwa Ibom state; Pastor. Umo Eno  has reiterated the need for South South governors on the platform of BRACED Commission, which represents Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Delta states to collaborate for the interest of the region’s development. Pst. Umo Eno highlighted this while fielding questions from newsmen at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, upon his arrival from the meeting of the South South Governors Forum (SSGF). He disclosed that some far-reaching resolutions taken by the Governors of the six South -South states during the meeting to include jettisoning political party sentiments and remaining united. He explained that the meeting identified development in infrastructure, security, trade and commerce as areas that they need to enhance their collaboration. “We also have to look at what we can benefit from one another. We can benefit from what we refer to as economy of scale by drawing strength from each other. “We also pledged our support to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Federal government because we must establish that partnership to be able to bring development to our people. “There are areas within the South/South region like the East-West Road linking all the states. We need to cooperate on commerce and trade.We need to cooperate in the area of security and we need to collaborate in the area of infrastructure. Those are the things we have to look at to foster development within our region,”

Wike Fubara Reach 8 Point Truce for Peace in Rivers State

The political crisis in Rivers State may have received a breather as warring parties reached a truce on Monday night at a meeting called by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja. This over three hours of the talks at the Aso Rock Villa, was held between President Bola Tinubu, Rivers Governor, Mr Siminalayi Fubara; his Deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu; a former governor of the State, Peter Odili and the immediate past governor now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesome Wike, and other stakeholders in the state. Also present at the meeting was the Vice President, Kashim Shettima; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
According to an eight-point resolution signed at the end of the meeting on Monday night, the President directed that all lawsuits instituted in the courts by Fubara and his team regarding the political crisis in Rivers State be withdrawn immediately. The resolution was signed by  Fubara; his deputy, Ordu; Wike;  Ribadu; factional Speaker of the Rivers State Assembly, Martin Amaewhule;  Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State, Aaron Chukwuemeka, and his All Progressives Congress Chairman, Tony Okocha. According to the directive, Fubara was mandated to re-present the 2024 appropriation bill he had earlier presented to the four-member state House of Assembly to the full House.     Also, the directive read that all impeachment proceedings initiated by the Rivers Assembly against Fubara should be dropped immediately. The eight-point resolutions read: 1. “All matters instituted in the courts by the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Fubara, and his team, in respect of the political crisis in Rivers State, shall be withdrawn immediately. 2. “All impeachment proceedings initiated against the Governor of Rivers State by the Rivers State House of Assembly should be dropped immediately 3. “The leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly as led by the Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule shall be recognised alongside the 27 members who resigned from the PDP. 4. “The remunerations and benefits of all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and their staff must be reinstated immediately and the Governor of Rivers State shall henceforth not interfere with the full funding of the Rivers State House of Assembly. 5. “The Rivers State House of Assembly shall choose where they want to sit and conduct their legislative business without interference and/or hindrance from the executive arm of government. 6. “The Governor of Rivers State, Sir Fubara, shall re-present the state budget to a properly constituted Rivers State House of Assembly. 7. “The names of all commissioners in the Rivers State Executive Council who resigned their appointments because of the political crisis in the State should be resubmitted to the House of Assembly for approval 8. “There should not be a caretaker committee for the local governments in Rivers State. The dissolution of the Local Government administration is null and void and shall not be recognised.” The entire country waits to see if the terms of this agreement will be upheld.

Rivers Political Crisis Deepens as 6 Commissioner Resign

The Rivers State political crisis deepened further on Thursday as six commissioners loyal to ex-governor Nyesom Wike resigned from the cabinet of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This was as the two factions of the split state House of Assembly held separate sittings on Thursday. The commissioners, who tendered their resignation were the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice,  Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor (SAN); Commissioner for Works, Dr Des George-Kelly; Commissioner for Special Duties, Emeka Woke; Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mrs Inime Aguma;  the Commissioner for Finance, Isaac Kamalu; and the  Commissioner for Education, Prof. Chinedu Mmom. Of the six commissioners, five served under Wike’s administration in the same capacity, while Woke was Wike’s Chief of Staff for eight years. There are reports of more resignations that can not be confirmed yet, but the next few days surely will be more interesting in Rivers State.
