CAF Approves Samson Siasia Stadium For Bayelsa United, CS Sfaxien Game

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, for the first leg CAF Confederation Cup clash between Bayelsa United of Nigeria and CS Sfaxien of Tunisia. The match is scheduled for Sunday, October 17. A letter conveying the approval sent by email to the NFF Secretary-General, Mohammed Sanusi and signed by Mohammed Sidat, CAF’s Club Licensing Senior Manager 1 (Development Division), stated: “We acknowledge receipt of the letter request and pre-inspection report with photos and videos of the Samson Siasia Stadium. “After analysing the information and in accordance with the stadium requirements for the CAF Interclubs 2021-22 season Second Preliminary Round, we inform you that the stadium is approved for this round.” The letter also indicated that another inspection might be required for the group stages if Bayelsa United qualify for the next round. The approval puts to rest speculations about the stadium, particularly its football pitch’s eligibility for the continental games involving Bayelsa United. In the first round played at the same stadium on September 19, Bayelsa United overpowered AS Ashanti Golden Boys of Guinea 4-2.

No UFC U-Turn for Khabib Nurmagomedov

Retired UFC Champions Khabib Nurmagomedov says nothing could make his return to the Octagon since he agreed with his mother to retire following his beloved father and Coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov’s passing. Khabib Nurmagomedov retired last October with a 29-0 unbeaten professional record making his one of the greatest to ever pratice the sport. Nurmagomedov said he retired “at the perfect time” and it was a “good decision”. The Russian also revealed UFC president Dana White had asked him to consider a return a couple of months ago. Asked about the likelihood of that happening, he replied: “No I don’t think so. I don’t know if my mind changes and I go a bit crazy, we never know what is going to happen tomorrow. “Right now I am not drunk on life. I am good, Alhamdulillah.” Nurmagomedov has been on a tour of the UK and was speaking at a fundraising event for charity SKT Welfare at London’s Indigo at the O2. The Former UFC Champion said concerning the road to his decision; “When my father died, my mother and I made the decision that it was going to be the last fight. I fought for a legacy and only came into sport to make history and to give motivation to the younger generations. “If you are from the mountain, are from a poor part of the world, if you have a dream you can do whatever you want. I defended my title twice with my father but I wondered why I need to follow this path without my father? “One day everything will come to an end anyway and it was a perfect time to finish. I think this was the right decision to retire, even after a year it was a good decision.”

Orji Uzor Kalu, Pulls Out of Weightlifting Presidential Race, Backs Iquaibom to Succeed

Former president of the Nigeria Judo federation, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has decided to pull out of the race to become president of the Weightlifting federation of Nigeria. This decision was reached after due consultation with friends who advised him to pull his weight behind another contestant, Lawrence Iquaibom , a former commonwealth champion in the sport. As Africa Pillar of Sports, Kalu reckons that he needs to play the big brother role to a former Olympian who has indeed invested his passion and money into developing the sport at state and National level and should not be seen as an elder who wants to reap where he has not sowed. “My intention was clear from the onset. I wanted to return Weightlifting to where it used to be. This is one sport that can give us medals at major international competitions. Everyone know what i achieved as president of the Nigeria Judo federation and now, as Chief Whip of the Nigeria Senate, i thought I could support Weightlifting, as part of my contribution to youth development. However, after due consultations with stakeholders of the sport, I realized that a former Olympian and one time commonwealth champion is already in the race and I thought that there is need to encourage him since he has same zeal to move the sport forward”. “On my part, I am willing to offer any kind of support if need be to the federation whenever necessary. Since we have thesame intentions, which is to rebrand Weightlifting in Nigeria, there is absolutely no need to contest against a young and committed stakeholder who truly has the interest of the sport at heart” Kalu said. Lawrence Iquaibom is a retired director of sports in Akwa Ibom state, who has invested so much in grassroot development of the sport at both state and National level and has continued to lobby key stakeholders to support his dream of becoming president of the Weightlifting federation of Nigeria. He certainly will be happy to work with a respected personality, passionate sports lover and philanthropist like Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.
