September 27, 2021 Like Kubiat, Like Goodluck! Another Death in Police Custody
Another death-in-Police-Custody has occurred, this time in Yenagoa the Bayelsa state Capital. Goodluck Oviekeme was said to have been arrested in Biogbolo, Bayelsa state on Wednesday September 22, in connection to a robbery case that took place a night before, Only for news of His death to emerge on Friday. Miffed by his reported death in police custody, residents of the community staged a protest on Saturday which grounded vehicular movement for hours in the state capital, Yenagoa. The Bayelsa State Police Command said Goodluck was arrested in connection to a robbery case that occurred on Tuesday, 21 September. Asinim Butswat the PPRO of the command reported that Goodluck and other hoodlums attacked the police patrol team on the day of the robbery incident and fatally injured a police inspector, Ugbotor Sunday and stole his rifle. He went further to say that Goodluck was observed to be having a fever and was rushed to the hospital where he eventually died. This reminds one of a similar incident in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state Capital where an intending National Youths Service Corps member, Kubiat Isaac Akpan who was arrested at a leisure spot died in Police Custody. Although Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has directed immediate investigations to reveal the circumstances surrounding the death of Goodluck Oviekeme in Police Custody and an Autopsy to be immediately conducted, One can not but ask if the Nigeria Police force are still in the business of protecting Citizens or merely ending their lives at will.
