President Tinubu Increases Retirement Age for Health Workers from 60 to 65 Years

President BOLA TINUBU has approved an increase in the retirement age for doctors and other healthcare workers from 60 to 65 years.

The National Publicity Secretary of Nigerian Medical Association -NMA, Dr MANNIR BATURE, made the disclosure in a statement in Lagos.

BATURE said the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. MUHAMMAD PATE, has been directed to formally present the approval to the Council on Establishment through the Office of the Head of Service for finalization.

He said the policy shift was conveyed by PATE during a high-level meeting with the NMA President, Prof. BALA AUDU, and key stakeholders in the health sector.

President Tinubu Raises 2025 Budget Proposal from N49.7Trn to N54.2Trn

President BOLA TINUBU has raised the proposed 2025 budget from 49.7 trillion naira to 54.2 trillion naira, citing additional revenues generated by key government agencies.

The President conveyed the budget adjustment in separate letters sent to both the Senate and the House of Representatives, which were read during plenary yesterday by the Senate President, GODSWILL AKPABIO.

According to President TINUBU, the increase was driven by 1.4 trillion naira in additional revenue from the Federal Inland Revenue Service, 1.2 trillion naira from the Nigeria Customs Service, and 1.8 trillion naira generated by other government-owned agencies.

Following the announcement, the Senate President has referred the President’s request to the Senate Committee on Appropriations for urgent consideration, assuring lawmakers that the budget would be finalised and passed before the end of February.

Uyo High Court Sentences University Don to Prison for Electoral Fraud

The High Court sitting in Uyo, has sentenced a Professor of Human Kinetics, Prof. IGNATIUS UDUK to three years in prison for electoral fraud.

You would recall that prof. UDUK was arraigned for abandonment of duties and generation of false scores on March 10, 2019 at the INEC office in Afaha Ikot Ebak, Essien Udim Local Government during the State House of Assembly elections.

He as also charged for announcement and publication of false election result and lying on oath at the inception of the Election Petition tribunal. Delivering the Judgment yesterday, Justice BASSEY NKANANG acquitted prof. UDUK of count 1, but convicted and sentenced him to three years imprisonment each on count 2 and 3, to be served concurrently.

The University Don, who was the collation/returning officer for Essien Udim State constituency in the 2019 general elections, was first arraigned in court by INEC on December 9, 2020.

National Assembly Set to Pass 2025 Budget this Week

The National Assembly will pass the proposed N49.7 trillion 2025 Appropriation Bill this week.

The Senate and House of Representatives joint Committees on Appropriation are expected to lay their reports today, Tuesday, during plenary.

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator ADEYEMI ADARAMODU, confirmed that the budget would be passed this week depending on the content of the report expected to be presented by the National Assembly Committees on Appropriations before the respective chambers.

Although both chambers had initially scheduled to pass the budget last Friday, January 31, 2025, the date was shifted to allow standing committees to complete their budget defence process undertaken by heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of the Federal Government.
