House of Reps Mandates Committee on Commerce to Check Prices of Commodities

the House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Commerce to investigate the daily increase in prices of commodities in the country.   This followed the adoption of a motion by JESSE ONUAKALUSI on “the Need to Awaken Price Control Board of Nigeria to its Constitutional Responsibilities” at plenary earlier today.   Presenting the motion, ONUAKALUSI said that the price control board had abandoned its responsibility of controlling commodity prices to the marketers at the detriment of consumers. He complained that this is happening at the time when workers’ take-home pay is yet to be increased.

Heavy Fighting Reported in Darfur Region of Sudan

There are reports of heavy fighting and shelling in the city of El Fasher in Sudan’s Darfur region.   Since mid-April the city has been besieged by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Fighting with the Sudanese army escalated on Friday and since then medical workers say more than 50 people have been killed and around 400 wounded.   The UN said the fundamental laws of war and international humanitarian law are being violated every day during the fight for control of El Fasher, maintaining appeals for the protection of civilians are being ignored. The city is a refuge for hundreds of thousands of civilians displaced by fighting elsewhere.

Labor Pulls Out of Minimum Wage Negotiation as FG Offers 48,000, OPS 54,000

The Organised Labour has pulled out of the ongoing minimum wage negotiations with the Federal Government.   The development came after the Federal Government and the Organized Private Sector, OPS, made an offer of 48,000 naira and 54,000 naira wage. The organized labour described the offer as ridiculous   The spokesman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, BENSON UPAH confirmed the exit to newsmen earlier today.

Nigeria Medical Association Withdraws Services for 3 Days Over Kidnap of Colleague

The Akwa Ibom State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association – NMA has directed allMedical Doctors in Government and Private Hospitals in the State to withdraw their services for the next 72 hours, which is three days.   NMA said the withdrawal of service is to enable them sympathize with their colleague, Dr JOHN ROBBIN ESU who was kidnapped on April 30th in Oron Local government Area and is still in the kidnappers’ den.   The directive formed part of the resolutions reached at the Association’s emergency meeting held yesterday, May 15, 2024 in Uyo. According a released signed by the State Chairman of NMA, Prof. EMEM ABRAHAM and the  Secretary, Dr. USENOBONG MORGAN, the action is to take immediate effect, and that any doctor found at work within this period will be sanctioned.   Speaking with INSPIRATION FM News, the State Public Relations Officer of NMA,DR. UNYIME NDOH said Doctors are not in the good frame of mind to continue working while their colleague is still with his adductors.   The Medical Association however appealed to Governor UMO ENO to ensure the safe release of their member unhurt as well as guaranteeing the security of lives and properties in the state.
