Supreme Court Dismisses Fubara’s Appeal Against Martin Amaewhule Led House of Assembly

A five-man panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice UWANI ABBA-AJI has dismissed the appeal filed by the Governor SIMINALAYI FUBARA, challenging the leadership of the State House of Assembly led by MARTIN AMAEWHULE.

Justice UWANI ABBA-AJI while dismissing the appeal awarded a cost of two million naira against the governor payable to the Rivers State House of Assembly as the first respondent and MARTIN AMAEWHULE as the second respondent.

The dismissal of the appeal by FUBARA was hinged on the withdrawal of the suit by the governor’s counsel, YUSUF ALI.

Counsel to the Speaker responded to the apex court’s decision.

The court also ruled that his decision to present the 2024 Rivers State Appropriation Bill to only four out of 31 members of the Assembly was a gross violation of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Isreali Troops Begin Withdrawals in Netzarim to Effect Ceasefire Agreement

Israeli troops have withdrawn from the Netzarim Corridor – a military zone cutting off the north of the Gaza Strip from the south.

Hundreds of Palestinians in cars and on carts laden with mattresses and other goods began returning to northern Gaza following the pull-out – often to scenes of utter destruction.

The Israeli withdrawal is in line with the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement of 19 January under which 16 Israeli hostages and 566 Palestinian prisoners have so far been freed.

By the end of the first stage of the ceasefire in three weeks’ time, 33 hostages and 1,900 prisoners are expected to have been freed.

Hamas seized 251 hostages and killed about 1,200 people when it attacked Israel on 7 October 2023, triggering the Gaza war.

CNPP Urges the National Assembly to Create Additional States

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called on the National Assembly to take immediate steps to create five additional states in Nigeria to address regional disparities in the country’s six geopolitical zones.

In a statement signed by its deputy national publicity secretary, Comrade James Ezema, CNPP emphasised that ensuring equity, fairness, and justice in resource distribution is essential for national unity and progress.

The group stressed that correcting the imbalance in state distribution would foster national stability and development.

According to the body, each of the six geopolitical zones should have seven states each, based on economic viability and other relevant factors for the new states to be created.

JAMB Warns Parents Against Unfounded Admission Denial Claims

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has warned parents and guardians against making unfounded allegations against universities over admission decisions, urging them to understand the ranking system used in the selection process.

JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Dr. Fabian Benjamin in a statement, refuted several recent allegations of admission denial, stressing that all decisions are based on merit and transparent ranking through the Central Admissions Processing System, CAPS.

Benjamin cited the case of Mr. Godwin Nsan, who publicly accused the University of Calabar of unfairly denying his son admission.

According to him, when JAMB investigated the case, it found that his son, who scored 201 in UTME with an aggregate of 34 percent, did not meet the institution’s cut-off scores of 55 percent (Merit), 35 percent (Catchment), and 35 percent (Educationally Less Developed States – ELDS).
