Nigeria Governors’ Forum Thumb Up Tinubu, Pledge Support for Petroleum Sector Reforms and Fight Against Insecurity

Governors of the 36 States have expressed support for efforts by the Federal Government to enhance local refining of petroleum products in the country.

The Governors also promised to work with security agencies to address the current security challenges across the country.

These formed part of resolutions at the meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) which held in Abuja last night.

In a chat with newsmen after the meeting, Imo State Governor, HOPE UZODINMA,said the current challenge of ensuring adequate supply of petroleum products must be resolved.

The forum also received a presentation from the new Director General of the Department for State Security, on the prevailing security challenges impacting the nation and detailed ongoing measures to mitigate these issues.

National Economic Council Asks President Tinubu to Recall Tax Reform Bill for Wider Consultation

The National Economic Council has asked President BOLA TINUBU to withdraw the Tax Reforms Bills from the National Assembly, to allow for wider consultations and consensus building.

The National Economic Council meeting was chaired by Vice President KASHIM SHETTIMA on Thursday.

Speaking after the meeting on Thursday, the Oyo State Governor, SEYI MAKINDE said the call for wider consultations formed part of resolutions reached at the 144th meeting of the National Economic Council at the State House, Abuja.

MAKINDE told journalists that the council members agreed that it was necessary to enhance understanding of the bills among Nigerians.

Meanwhile, the Presidency had given explanations on the tax reform bill which is before the National Assembly, insisting that is not targeted at the 19 northern states.

The governors of the 19 Northern states had rejected the bill, especially the proposed amendment to the distribution of Value Added Tax (VAT) to a derivation-based model.

In statement released to newsmen on Thursday, presidential spokesman, BAYO ONANUGA, said the new proposal, as articulated in the bill, is designed to create a fairer system that will benefit all states.

Guinean Military Government Dissolves Political Parties as Wait for Election Dates Continues

Guinean authorities have dissolved dozens of political parties and placed two major opposition parties under observation, as the transitional government has yet to announce a date for elections.

The West African country has been ruled by a military regime since soldiers ousted President ALPHA CONDE in 2021. The West African regional bloc, known as ECOWAS, has pushed for a return to civilian rule and elections are scheduled for 2025.

The mass dissolution of 53 political parties and the mandatory surveillance of 54 others for three months are unprecedented in Guinea, which held its first democratic elections in 2010 after decades of authoritarian rule.

The Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization announced the measures based on an assessment of all political parties that began in June. The assessment was aimed at cleaning up the political scene.

FCCPC Warns Against Continuous Service Disruptions by Commercial Banks

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has warned financial institutions against continuing disruption in online banking services across Nigeria.

A statement by the commission’s Executive Vice Chairman/ Chief Executive Officer, TUNJI BELLO, said it was deeply concerned by the disruption which has hindered customers from accessing their funds, making payments, and carrying out essential transactions.

According to the commission, service providers are required by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act to be transparent and communicate with customers openly and accurately.

It said during service disruption, it is essential that banks keep their customers fully informed about the causes, scope, and anticipated duration of any service issues.
