South East Governors Move to Stop IPOB Sit at Home

Governors of the south-east region of Nigeria have vowed to end the sit-at-home order by the proscribed group IPOB.

In a communique issued on Tuesday after an emergency security meeting in Enugu, Enugu State, which was convened to discuss the security crisis in the region, which many believe is caused by the pro-Biafra group, IPOB.

The sit-at-home order, which is observed every Monday in Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, and Ebonyi states, has continuously disrupted the economic and social activities in the region and posed huge security threat to travellers trasversing the region.

The order is meant to put pressure on the Nigerian government to release the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is standing trial in Abuja for alleged terrorism.

“The meeting condemned the sit-at-home orders, which are mostly issued by our people in diaspora who do not feel the pains, the meeting resolved that Governors and all (the) people of the South-east do everything within the law to ensure that there is no further sit-at-home in the South-east and that the people are allowed to freely move about in the zone,” the governors said in the communique.

The governors condemned the killings in the region and agreed to support security agencies to restore peace.

The governor agreed that all the states in the South-east should pass a law before the end of 2021 to give legal backing to the setting up of a joint security outfit, Ebubeagu, in the region.

The meeting also mandated clergymen, the Christian Association of Nigeria, Ohanaeze and traditional rulers to continue to dialogue with youths in the region.

The Governors of Ebonyi, Imo and Enugu states and the deputy governor of Abia were Present at the meeting that also had in attendance, Senators Ike Ekweremadu, Enyinnaya Abaribe, Tobi Okechukwu, Victor Umeh, former governors, National Assembly members from the region, a former chief of Army Staff, Azubuike Ihejirika, clergymen and traditional rulers.

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra was conspicuously absent at the meeting, neither was the state represented although governorship elections in Anambra is scheduled to hold on November 6.

The governors resolved to support the conduct of the Anambra election, and called on security agencies to ensure that the election is peaceful.

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State hosted the meeting.

Bill to Reduce Incidents of Fire Outbreak In Nigeria Scales First Reading

The bill for an act to make provisions for the establishment of building fire safety measures, regulation and penalty for defaulters has passed the first reading in the House of Representatives.

Sponsored by the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Communications and member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, Rep. Unyime Idem, the bill was presented before the House on Tuesday.

Rep. Idem said the bill is an act to amend the Fire Service Act, CAP F29 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 to further reduce the incessant cases of fire outbreaks in the country which has become worst due to non availability of fire safety/fighting equipment in both private and public buildings.

The bill titled, Fire Safety Act (Amendment) Bill, 2021 partly reads “Section 2 of the Principal Act is amended by adding the word “management”.

The new section 2 to read as follows: – “The Fire Service shall be employed for the management, extinguishment, control and prevention of fire, the saving and protection of life and property and for such other humanitarian and other works as may be required of them under the authority of the Minister.”

“Section 5 of the Principal Act is amended by adding a new paragraph e to further establish the intention of paragraph d.
The new section 5 (e) to read as follows: – give approval for building after thorough perusal of the submitted building plan and compliance with provision of necessary fire services prevention and management kits and supervision protocols.”

According to Rep. Idem, when passed into Law, the bill will empower the Fire Service to inspect and approve buildings in the country in line with fire safety measures which is a standard and global practice to avoid or reduce the effect of fire incident.

South South Governors to Launch Regional Security Outfit

Governors from the South-South region of the Country on Monday October 4th held a meeting at the Government house, Port Harcourt, Rivers state to discuss issues affecting their respective states. Chief among the decisions reached was the decision to launch a regional security outfit, in response to current security challenges plaguing the Country.

 

A Communique was released after the meeting which reads thus;

COMMUNIQUE OF THE MEETING OF THE BRACED (SOUTH-SOUTH) GOVERNORS COUNCIL HELD AT THE RIVERS STATE GOVERNMENT HOUSE, PORT HARCOURT ON MONDAY 4TH OCTOBER 2021.
The BRACED Governors’ Council met on Monday, October 4th, 2021 at the Conference Room of the Rivers State Governor’s House, Port Harcourt. The meeting was presided over by Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, Chairman of Council and Governor of Delta state. Also in attendance were the governors of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Edo.
After extensive deliberation, the Council resolved
1.Bearing in mind that most of the BRACED states have established their state security organs, approved the regional security architecture which would be launched soon.
2.Unequivocally supports the decision for states to collect Value Added Tax (VAT) and resolved to join the suit before the Supreme Court.
3.Council urged the President and the National Assembly to take necessary measures to review some unfair aspects of the recently signed Petroleum Industry Bill to ensure fairness and equity. It urged that the amendment should include a clear definition of host communities and that the trustees should be appointed by State Governments.
4.Council called upon the President and the Federal Government to uphold the law establishing the Niger Delta Development Commission by appropriately constituting its Board.
In addition, it expressed the hope that the Federal Government would make the forensic audit report public and deal justly and fairly with the report with a view to strengthening the capacity of the NDDC to meet its obligations to the people of the region.
5.Council regretted that the President and the Federal Government had generally failed to give reasoned consideration to requests made by the region during the dialogue with a special Federal delegation led by Professor Ibrahim Gambari, Chief of Staff to the President. Notable among the requests were the relocation of NNPC subsidiaries and IOCs headquarters to the Niger Delta and the completion of a number of Federal projects in the region, notably, roads.
At the end of deliberations, Council expressed its appreciation to the Chairman and commended the host governor for his warm hospitality and the success of the meeting. It commended the Director-General of the Commission for his unweaving commitment to the region’s aspiration and the work of the Commission done at Port Harcourt this day, Monday, October 4, 2021
