Cult Clashes Ravage Nwaniba, In Uyo

Residents of Nwaniba, in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state have not slept with their eyes closed due to a  bloody supremacy clash between two rival cult groups – Klaans and Black Axe confraternities – over the control of a minibus park in that axis.

It was gathered that the incident started on Sunday in the Nwaniba Area of the state when the two groups engaged each other over alleged encroachment into the park to collect parking tolls by one group, forcing an angry reaction from the opposing camp.

A resident of the community, Nora Iwang, told Journalists in Uyo  that property estimated at several millions of naira have been destroyed in the clashes while thousands have deserted their homes.

Nora who said she was returning home that fateful day disclosed that she had to sleep with relations and friends outside the area, following distressed calls from frightful neighbours around Udo Ekpo Nkpo Street.

“Thank God, I finally arrived at my house this morning  after my friends called me Monday evening to sleep elsewhere and not to return for fear of being killed by the rampaging armed hoodlums,” Iwang lamented.

Investigation revealed that eight people were slaughtered in Use Offot, and over 10 others were killed in Anua, Ekpri Nsukara and Oniong communities, while several others have been hospitalised in various hospitals with varying degrees of injuries.

Meanwhile, the police Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko Macdon, who confirmed the killings, said only four people were killed, adding that “the Commissioner of Police Olatoye Durosinmi, is miffed at the disruption of public order and safety by two rival cult groups at Anua Offot and Use Offot, both at Nwaniba, in Uyo Local Government Area, leading to the loss of lives.

“The CP condemned in strong terms the wanton destruction of lives and has vowed to bring perpetrators to book, hence, he has deployed Tactical resources to restore order and fish out the perpetrators.

“The CP has, therefore, called on residents of the said communities and Uyo, to go about their lawful businesses without fear of molestation and be assured of their safety because of strategies emplaced.

“He has sent a clear warning to perpetrators of these dastardly acts to desist forthwith or face the dire consequences of their actions,” Macdon said in a statement on Tuesday.

Hope Rises for Blessing Okagbare as Lira Pleads Guilty

The hope of former Nigerian track and field star Blessing Okagbare clearing her name of doping and returning to the sport received a big boost on Monday after therapist Eric Lira pleaded guilty at the American court in Texas.

Okagbare was banned for 10 years after she was found guilty of using banned drugs.

Lira was found to have supplied drugs to Okagbare in the build-up to the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

US Attorney Damian Williams said Monday after Lira pleaded guilty in a federal court in Manhattan that the case was a “watershed moment for international sport.”

“Lira provided banned performance-enhancing substances to Olympic athletes who wanted to corruptly gain a competitive edge,” Williams said.

“Such craven efforts to undermine the integrity of sport subverts the purpose of the Olympic games: to showcase athletic excellence through a level playing field.

“Lira’s efforts to pervert that goal will not go unpunished.”

US anti-doping officials welcomed Lira’s conviction, noting that it was only made possible by the recently enacted law.

“Without this law, Lira, who held himself out as a doctor to athletes, likely would have escaped consequence for his distribution of dangerous performance-enhancing drugs and his conspiracy to defraud the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games because he did not fall under any sport anti-doping rules,” said Travis Tygart, the chief executive of the United States Anti-Doping Agency, a nonprofit”, AFP confirmed.

Action Alliance Withdraws Petition Against Tinubu as Presidential Tribunal Begins Seating

The Action Alliance, one of the political parties that contested at the February 25 Presidential election,  has withdrawn its petition against the President-elect, Bola  Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.

The action was taken at the ongoing pre-hearing at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in cases disputing the outcome of the presidential election on Monday in Abuja.

The ruling All Progressives Congress’s Bola Tinubu received 8,794,726 votes, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The commission announced that Atiku finished second with 6,984,520 votes, while Labour Party’s Peter Obi finished second with 6,101,533 votes.

However, Atiku, Obi, and other parties challenged INEC’s results and petitioned the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal to overturn Tinubu’s victory.

On what to expect at today’s hearing, a senior lawyer in Tinubu’s camp told one of our correspondents on Sunday, “The only thing they will do is schedule the hearing, the number of witnesses, how many minutes the witness will use, and how to admit the documents; that’s what they call pre-trial.”

“They are going to prepare a timetable for the hearing of the cases, the number of days to be spent by the petitioners, the number of days to be spent by the respondents, how do we take in the documents, certified true copy of the documents, are they going to be admitted like that, or if there is an objection, how do we raise an objection to document?”

“Will the court write an objection ruling immediately, or will it write it in the cause of the main judgment?” That is what will happen tomorrow (Monday).”

In his 66-page appeal, Atiku asks the tribunal to proclaim him the winner of the race or to order a new election.

Obi, for his part, is asking the tribunal to invalidate Tinubu’s election in his case.
