APC and PDP Clash Over Land Reclamation in Benin

The Edo state Government’s land reclamation efforts in Benin city, the Edo state Capital had led to a war of words between top political parties in the state. The reclamation exercise which has led to the demolition of over 100 buildings in Irhirihi, Arougba, Obazagbon and Ogheghe communities is said to be targeted in order to take over APC strongholds.

The APC, in a statement on Monday, by its chairman, Col. David Imuse (retd.), accused the state government of hiding under the guise of building a new town to take over the area.

The party also faulted the state government’s claim that the area had over the years been acquired by the government and known as Ogba Forest Reserve, but still went ahead to issue a Certificate of Occupancy to genuine buyers.

He said, “As a party, we condemn in strong terms these illegal demolitions by the jittery and rudderless PDP-led administration in the state. We see this policy of regularly demolishing public and private properties by the Obaseki-led government as irrational, evil and undemocratic.

“Before this land was forcefully acquired by the same government in 2017, it was the world-renowned Ogba River Forest Reserve, which successive governments before Obaseki used for reforestation purposes.”

However, the Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, has lambasted the APC state chapter for faulting the government’s determination to end land-grabbing in the state.

He noted that the party and its leaders were afraid because they were the main culprits in the illegal enterprise and were scared that they would be caught in the web as the exercise progresses.

He said, “The APC in the state is jittery over the determination of Governor Obaseki to end land-grabbing in Edo, because they are the land-grabbers.

“The party and its leaders are throwing tantrums today over the repossession exercise in Irhirhi-Obazagbon-Ogheghe Road because while they held office, the APC and its chieftains promoted the appropriation of community land with the use of non-state actors and overlords, who in the run-up to the Edo State governorship election in 2020 were popularly known as lions and tigers.

“Obaseki parted ways with the APC, chiefly due to such ideological differences.”

Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria ARCON Sues Meta

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria(ARCON) has filed a case against Meta Platforms Incorporated, owners of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms and its agent AT3 Resources Limited at the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division.

According to a statement on Tuesday by the apex regulatory body for Nigeria’s advertising ecosystem, ARCON is seeking a declaration among others that the continued publication and exposure of various advertisements directed at the Nigerian market through Facebook and Instagram platforms by Meta Platforms Incorporated without ensuring the same is vetted and approved before exposure is illegal, unlawful and a violation of the extant advertising Law in Nigeria.

ARCON stated that Meta Platforms Incorporated’s continued exposure of unvetted adverts had also led to loss of revenue to the Federal Government.

ARCON is seeking N30bn in sanction for the violation of the advertising laws and for loss of revenue as a result of Meta Incorporated’s continued exposure of unapproved adverts on it’s platforms.

According to ARCON, the Council is not regulating the online media space. Rather, it’s focus is on advertising and marketing communications on the online platforms in line with its establishment Act.

ASUU Insists on UTAS as Federal Government Makes Fresh Offers

Academic Staff Union of Universities has insisted on the University Transparency Accountability Solution; UTAS even as the Federal Government made fresh offers.

The House of Representatives, on Thursday, had concluded its meetings with stakeholders over the lingering impasse between the Federal Government and ASUU, saying its recommendations would soon be presented to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the report of the stakeholders’ roundtable and the recommendations of the parliament would soon be ready.

Gbajabiamila, in his closing remarks at the end of the meeting that lasted two hours, pleaded with ASUU to accept whatever the House eventually recommends in good faith.

He said, “I believe this would be, hopefully, the last meeting we are going to have on this matter because from here, the leadership of the House will put together our reports, our recommendations, and our thoughts and take them to Mr President.

“I am hoping that whatever we have done, ASUU will accept it in good faith—this is an independent arm of the government—and that the government will accept it in good faith as well so that our children can return to school, which is what this is all about.”

The Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Folashade Yemi-Esan, pointed out that the government cannot run two parallel payment platforms for workers due to the huge financial implication, urging ASUU to allow the university system to be captured under IPPIS.

The ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, however, pointed out that allowing the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to determine who should be paid in the universities would usurp the powers conferred on the governing councils of the institutions.
