Tobi Amusan not Cleared for Budapest 2023 – World Athletics

The World Athletics has disclosed that women’s 100m hurdles world champion and record holder, Tobi Amusan, has not yet been cleared to compete at this year’s World Championships, which begins on August 19 in Budapest, Hungary.

This is in reaction to reports that the Nigerian had been given the go ahead to compete to defend her title at the championships.

Amusan was provisionally suspended last month by the AIU for missing three whereabouts tests.

Head of Communications of World Athletics, Nicole Jeffery, in a statement obtained via Nigerian track and field club Making of Champions said, “Please be advised – reports appearing in Nigeria that say Tobi Amusan has been cleared to compete in Budapest are wrong.

No decision has been made in this case yet. When a decision is made, it will be announced by the Athletics Integrity Unit.”

In the entry list published by World Athletics, the women’s 100m hurdles world record holder was listed among Team Nigeria’s athletes, but her participation is still subject to clearance by the AIU.

With a decision expected to be made before the start of the championships, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria said it was awaiting the AIU’s verdict on the hurdler.

Jury Out on Anthony Joshua’s Win Over Robert Helenius

Boxing fans all over the world continue to X-ray Anthony Joshua’s first knockout victory in nearly three years, after the former Heavyweight Champ knocked out Robert Helenius at the 02 Arena in London on Saturday night.

Anthony Joshua produced a stunning one-punch seventh round knockout over last minute opponent Helenius to set up a blockbuster clash with Deontay Wilder in Saudi Arabia next year.

It was his first KO win since he defeated Kubrat Puliev December 12, 2020.

After a tentative start where neither man landed anything of note, Joshua found his range and committed with the right hand to devastating effect.

Some boxing pundits however believe that Anthony Joshua still has a long way to go to regain his “Killer Instincts” if he’s to be ready to regain his world titles, as he gets ready for a fight in December against Deontay Wilder.

The ‘Bronze Bomber’ appeared to also be pleased with the manner of the victory. Speaking to October Red Youtube channel, Wilder’s trainer, Malik Scott, revealed his man’s immediate reaction to the stoppage.

“He (Wilder) was like ‘we needed that.’ We both said the same thing because at first it was looking like it was getting ready to go the distance so when the knockout came I called him on FaceTime and he was like ‘I’m glad he got that, we needed it done just like that.’

“So we’re both satisfied, the fight is bigger to me than it was because of the knockout, so shout out to AJ to going out there and getting the job done,” Scott said.

Eddie Hearn confirmed that Saudi representatives were in London for the fight and are hopeful of finalising a deal in the coming days.

August 8, 2023 Edo State: Crisis Deepenes Between Obaseki and Philip Shaibu

Edo State: Crisis Deepenes Between Obaseki and Philip Shaibu

The rift between the Governor of Edo state and his deputy seems to be takins a different dimension as the  Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Monday, stated that there was no plan to impeach his deputy,  Philip Shaibu, although his romance with the All Progressives Congress; APC is visible and worrisome.

The governor, noted that the move by Shaibu seeking a court order to stop his purported impeachment was preemptive ahead of his alleged plan to defect to the All Progressives Congress.

The governor, while briefing journalists in Benin City during a visit by the Edo North leaders, alleged that the deputy governor had been actively engaging with senior actors both at the national and state level of the APC, negotiating his way into their party, adding that he was on the verge of finalising moves to defect to the APC.

Obaseki said, “Let me put it on record that I am not aware of any plot or any scheme to impeach the Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu. I have also checked and there was no such plan.

“So, the court action taken, for me, is a thing of shock and disappointment. I am trying to reflect on the move made by somebody that I have given a broad latitude to do his work as deputy governor. So, for him to take this kind of action is shocking.”

Obaseki said Shaibu never discussed his governorship ambition with him.

“The last time we spoke of my successor after the House of Assembly election, I did say that we should be patient and that our task is to try and finish well and conclude all our projects we started. It’s only when we do this right that we will have the support of the people for my successor.

“I believe that this action by him is a preemptive move to get a court order, keep his ticket and move to another party. I think it’s unfair for our party. We don’t need this sort of crisis. I have been getting calls all over the world and it’s rather sad that somebody who is part of an administration will do this to the administration because of his personal ambition.”

Obaseki said he was not angry “but naturally I should be disappointed.”

Eddie Hearn to Announce New Opponent for Anthony Joshua

Anthony Joshua will fight as planned on Saturday at London’s O2 Arena, with promoter Eddie Hearn expected to reveal Dillian Whyte’s replacement soon.

The heavyweight rematch was canceled after Whyte returned “an adverse finding” from a drug test last week.

Whyte, said he was “devastated” and “completely innocent.”

However, Eddie Hearn told newsmen, “I believe that fight will be signed and an announcement will be made on Monday night or first thing in the morning.”

“The absolute plan is to have a show on Saturday night,” he stated. It’s a minefield because everyone puts their name in the hat, and the credible ones want £10 million, a private plane, and the contract to include my left lower limb.”

Anthony Joshua, reacted calmly after the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) told promoters Matchroom and boxing authorities of Whyte’s test result, resulting in the fight’s cancellation.

“With a week until one of the biggest fights of the year, I was stunned and perplexed.” “AJ sent me a message that was unbelievably calm,” Hearn remarked.

“AJ is determined to fight. He’s looked terrific in camp. I’ve never seen him in better form.

“The plan is to get the most credible opponent and someone who can put Anthony Joshua to test in preparation for Deontay Wilder “
