Flood Sweeps Away 2 Children in Awka

Two children have reportedly been swept away in flood incidents that occurred at different locations at Nkwele Awka in the Awka South Local Government of Anambra State on Friday.

The deceased, who were between the ages of four and seven, were said to have lost their lives while carrying out activities around the flood plains.

It was gathered that one of the kids was swept away by the flood while disposing of refuse along the floodplain, the other was swept away as he attempted to retrieve his slippers being washed away by the flood.

A resident in the area, who gave her name simply as Ify, said, “The mother had sent one of the victims, a girl, on an errand to go and dispose of their waste when she was caught up by the flood.

She was pouring the waste inside the drainage when one of her legs suddenly slipped and she fell inside the drainage and was carried away by the heavy flood.

The other, a boy, was walking along the flood plain when one of his slippers suddenly slipped away. As he was trying to retrieve it, the force of the flood swept him and to date, he has not been found.”

The mother of one of the victims, identified as Ogechi, who confirmed the incident on Sunday, lamented that she was too devastated to speak at the moment, saying, “Please, I am still in pains to talk now as I am still looking for my child who has gone missing while returning from an errand.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the incident was not reported to the command.

The matter was not reported to the command. It is a pure environmental disaster, but we will keep working with relevant agencies to make sure safety is improved,” Ikenga said.

“Despite My Ambition, My Loyalty to Obaseki is Un-Alloyed” – Philip Shaibu

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has reaffirmed his allegiance to Governor Godwin Obaseki amidst recent tensions. Shaibu emphasized that loyalty transcends personal ambitions, highlighting the strength of their bond.

Shaibu was speaking on Sunday at the 32nd anniversary of Edo State, held at the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, Edo State, described the governor as his elder brother.

This is following weeks of palpable tensions between the governor and his deputy. The deputy had gone to a Federal High in Abuja and obtained an injunction to stop the governor and state assembly of plots to impeach him.

He said, “My loyalty to the governor remains absolute. I see that everybody is doing solidarity. I am also in solidarity with the governor. I am also declaring my unalloyed loyalty to the governor and nothing more.”

As for the issues that are around town when I was away, I really would not want to talk about them especially about the governor. He is my elder brother and boss and I don’t think I should talk about anything.

“And if I have issues with him, I think it is better settled at home and not in the media. I am well brought up.

I can tell you that from my Christian background, if you make a vow with God that you want to do something, you must fulfill it. And the vow I have taken with God is that I will continue to support Godwin Obaseki as the governor of Edo State from the beginning to the end.

But that does not stop anything that has to do with ambition. Ambition is personal and it does not affect loyalty. My loyalty to the governor remains absolute. I see that everybody is doing solidarity. I am also in solidarity with the governor. I am also declaring my unalloyed solidarity and loyalty to the governor and nothing more.”

Obaseki, on his part, had expressed shock at his deputy’s action and  accused him of plotting a coup against him.

Recall that Obaseki accused Shaibu of planning to succeed him at all costs ahead of the state governorship election scheduled to hold in 2024.

The defendant’s lawyer, Nojeem Azeez, told the court that he was yet to file his client’s bail application. He therefore asked for a short date, to enable him to file the bail application.
