Regional Trials Begin in Akwa Ibom Ahead of Niger-Delta Sports Festival

 

As the Niger Delta Sports Festival, tagged UYO 2025, draws nearer, Akwa Ibom State is gearing up to make a strong showing across disciplines.

 

The state trials began in full with budding talents from the Eket Senatorial District competing for one of 316 coveted spots to represent the state at the inaugural event.

 

From the pitch to the tracks, mat, sand, river, pool, and courts, young athletes gave their all, showcasing their skills in various sports, including football, track and field, weightlifting, traditional wrestling, swimming, basketball, boxing, tennis, handball, canoeing, and volleyball.

 

The technical lead of the Akwa Ibom State Liaison Committee, Coach CATHERINE EWA-EKUTA OLY, expressed her excitement about the talents on display, hinting that a bright future awaits Akwa Ibom talents.

 

Our Head of Sports, Adebayo Samuel reports that the trials, held in various locations across the Eket Senatorial District, including Eket town, Ibeno LGA, and Oron, saw a high level of competition, with many young athletes displaying exceptional skills and energy.

 

However, the Commissioner for Sports, Elder PAUL BASSEY, visited the trials and expressed satisfaction with the turnout and level of competition displayed by the athletes.

Agric Commissioner Applauds Governor Umo Eno for Rewarding Exceptional Student

Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr (Mrs) OFFIONG OFFOR has commended Governor UMO ENO for the special recognition and awards on Akwa Ibom sons and daughters who have distinguished themselves in academics and other endeavours of live.

DrOffor particularly, thanked Governor Eno on the special recognition and the 10 Million Naira award given to her constituent, Master EDIDIONG FAVOUR ESSIEN of Ebo-ItuMbonuso in Ini Local Government Area who had the best result in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination conducted by WAEC, where he made eight distinctions out of the nine subjects he wrote.

The Commissioner said by that recognition for Master Essien and his colleagues, Governor Eno has spurred more Akwa Ibom children to aim towards excellence in their studies and other endeavours of their lives.

She advised Master EDIDIONG FAVOUR ESSIEN against complacency, noting that the Governor’s recognition should encourage him to put in his best and make his family and community proud, and aim for a brighter future.

Dr. Offor thanked his parents for raising a worthy son, and urged them not to rest on their oars until Master Essien attains his full potential in life.

Dr. Offor had earlier on received Master EDIDIONG FAVOUR ESSIEN and his parents.

President Tinubu Appoints 5 INEC Resident Electoral Commissioners

President BOLA TINUBU has asked the Senate to confirm the appointment of five nominees as Resident Electoral Commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This was contained in a letter addressed to Senate President GODSWILL AKPABIO and read during plenaryyesterday.

President Tinubu stated that the nominations were in line with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the president to appoint electoral commissioners subject to Senate approval.

The five nominees are: UMAR YUSUF GARBA – Kano; SAAD UMAR – Bauchi; CHUKWUEMEKA IBEZIAKO – Anambra; MOHAMMAD  NGOSHE– Borno and Dr. OWEDE KOSIOMA ELI – Bayelsa.

NDDC Thumbs Up Akwa Ibom Sports Infrastructure

With less than three weeks to the commencement of the maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival, the Main Organizing Committee – MOC has expressed confident in the hosting capacity of Akwa Ibom State, following the quality of sports infrastructure available in the state.
The co-chairman of the MOC and festival consultant, Sir Itiako Ikpokpo stated this shortly after inspecting sporting facilities and hostels accomodation in select centres across the state ahead of the festival.
Conducted round by the State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, the committee inspected facilities at the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre – DASAC in Ikot Ada Idem, Ibiono Ibom, West Itam Sports Centre, Itu, Cornelia Cornelly College, Afaha Oku, Ultrafit Recreational Centre, Ewet Housing, Uyo Township Stadium and the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
Speaking to Journalists after the inspection, Ikpokpo lauded the efforts of the Akwa Ibom State government in sports infrastructural development, especially the quality of facilities at DASAC, emphasizing that the state was unanimously selected to host the maiden edition of the festival due to its huge investment in sports development.
Akwa Ibom is a beautiful place, the facilities we have seen are in good condition and I’m sure we will use them to put together the best of competitions. The planning started over a year ago and we are in the execution phase right now. I can assure you that in the next two weeks all the facilities for the festival will be ready.”
He thanked the state governor, Pastor Umo Eno for accepting to host the festival which he described as Niger Delta Development Commission – NDDC’s contribution to sports development not only in the region, but the country in general, adding that the week long sports meet which will begin from April 1 with over 5000 athletes and officials expected, will have positive economic impact on the state.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey restated the readiness of the state government to host the sports festival and commended NDDC for rehabilitating some of the sporting facilities in the state, assuring that the ministry of sports under his leadership will ensure proper management and maintenance of the facilities during and after the sports festival.
Trials for the festival have started across the nine states of the Niger Delta and athletes will be expected to compete in 17 sports including football, basketball, tennis, table tennis, swimming, athletics, traditional sports, para-lifting, wrestling, boxing, volleyball among others.
