Tanker Fire Kills 20 in Ore, Ondo State

A tanker fire has killed no fewer than 20 persons in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Sunday.

The victims were said to have been scooping fuel from a petrol tanker that fell and spilled its content along the Benin–Ore-Sagamu Expressway on Sunday.

According to an eyewitness, the fire was ignited by a spark from a phone held by one of the persons who were scooping fuel.

The eyewitness stated that the victims of the disaster included three children and a pregnant woman who reportedly brought some money to the scene to buy fuel.  “We were inside the church when the tanker fell and spilled its contents on the road. Shortly after it fell down and spilled the fuel on the road, some persons rushed to the place to scoop fuel.

“At that time, the rain was falling. Despite that, people still rushed there and started scooping fuel when the fire started after a spark from a phone.

“At the scene, we have counted about three children and over 15 bodies we can’t identify, and also a pregnant woman that wanted to buy the fuel also died in the incident. They were burnt beyond recognition.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident and described the victims as fuel scoopers.

Ferns of New Zealand Open FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup with a Win Over Norway

The 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup Co-hosts; New Zealand opened the showpiece in blistering form to secure a 1-nil victory over Norway, their first at this stage.

On a memorable night in Auckland, the Football Ferns produced a huge upset after Hannah Wilkinson swept home Jacqui Hand’s cross in front of an ecstatic crowd of 42,137 at Eden Park – a record for a football match in New Zealand.

Even Ria Percival’s 89th-minute missed penalty, after a handball by Tuva Hansen, failed to dampen the celebrations.

Fans turned up in their numbers to cheer their side who had failed to win any of their previous 15 World Cup games.

They were rewarded when Wilkinson broke the deadlock in the 48th minute to spark joyous scenes in the stands.

Norway, the 1995 world champions, should have equalised soon after Wilkinson’s goal but Arsenal’s Frida Maanum poked a glorious chance wide.

New Zealand went toe to toe with their opponents and it required a diving save Aurora Mikalsen by to prevent Ali Riley from doubling the lead.

There was a minute’s silence before kick-off for the Victims of a deadly shooting in Auckland earlier on Thursday.

Buying Drugs from Hawkers and Fruits Ripened with Carbide Will Kill You – NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has expressed concern over dangers of drug hawking and ripening of fruits with carbide.

Director-General of the agency, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, who stated this during a media sensitisation workshop on dangers of drug hawking and ripening of fruits with carbide in Lagos, yesterday, organised by the agency, said the menace of drug hawking poses serious challenge to healthcare system, adding that NAFDAC is poised to eradicate the illicit practice.

Adeyeye, who was represented by Director, Chemical Evaluation and Research, Dr. Leonard Omokpariola, said: “Most of the drugs sold by hawkers are counterfeit, substandard and often expired and do not meet the requirements of regulated medicine.

“Drug hawkers prescribe medicines to their gullible patients. They are also major distributors of narcotics medicines to armed bandits, armed robbers, insurgents and kidnappers. They constitute serious threat to our national security.” She said any drug hawker arrested by NAFDAC would be prosecuted and be made to face a jail term.

“We solicit the support of other law enforcement agencies in ridding the country of this harmful and shameful practice.

“The war is on and we must fight it together,” she said. The director-general, who stated that ripening of fruits with carbide is another menace, said the agency would continue to engage the media in tackling this.

She said consumption of fruits preserved with carbide is hazardous to the health and could cause cancer, kidney, liver failure or weakness of immune system.

He urged Nigerians to buy drugs only from licensed pharmacists and medicine stores, as NAFDAC is committed to safeguarding the health of the nation.  He said: “I wish to warn that any drug hawker arrested by NAFDAC will be prosecuted and will face a jail term.

“NAFDAC enforcement officers are currently carrying out synchronised nation-wide operation. No offender will be spared from facing the full wrath of the law. In this regard, we solicit the co-operation and support of all other law enforcement agencies, Nigerian journalists and well-meaning Nigerians in riding the country of this harmful and shameful practice.”

AFN Reacts to Tobi Amusan’s World Athletics’ Doping Charges

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), has  said it is seriously disturbed by charges leveled against 100m Hurdler; Tobi Amusan,  by World Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) concerning missed doping tests.

Tobi Amusan, the 2021 world champion and world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, is in trouble for allegedly missing three out of competition dope tests in a 12 months period. She will appear before a three-man arbitration panel to clear her name before the Budapest 2023 World Championships in August.

AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, yesterday, described the situation as ‘sad,’ but added that Amusan is not out of the Budapest 2023 World Championships yet.

“I have not been myself since the news broke out last night, I don’t think she is out of the World Championships yet. It will depend on what happens at the arbitration panel. Our prayer now is for the AIU to give Tobi fast hearing. If she is cleared before the World Championships, then she can compete for us. But I am really worried.”

Technical Director of the AFN, Samuel Onikeku, also said that he hopes Amusan is cleared of the doping violation charges filed against her by the AIU.

“I hope she comes out of it, but there is nothing we (AFN) can do,” Onikeku stated.
