January 2, 2024 Athletics Federation of Nigeria Set to Roll Out 2024 Plans

Athletics Federation of Nigeria Set to Roll Out 2024 Plans

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has said that it would, this week, roll out its plans for this year’s African Games holding in Ghana, and the Paris 2024 Olympics amidst other plans for the year 2024. AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, also stated  that the body would meet this weekend to discuss certain issues, including the venue for camp for athletes.

He also revealed that the last board meeting scheduled for December 31, 2023, could not hold due to the absence of some of the members, who insisted on having the audit committee report as first item on the agenda.

“The AFN board is made up of people with high integrity. There is no way we will allow a few individuals to dictate to us. The audit committee report was debated upon in our last meeting held on December 10, and it was listed as AOB for our meeting of December 31.

“The Audit Committee, which the AFN board set up to look into the financial records, has five members. So far, only one or two members of the committee have been talking. We are yet to get the full report signed by the five board members. Not until we get it, there is no way the AFN will treat it as official document. For now, the Audit Committee Report is inconclusive,” he stated.

Okowa, who is also the president of Africa Region 2 Athletics body, added that the AFN board would hold its meeting this Saturday, adding that any further delay could affect Team Nigeria’s preparation for the African Games scheduled to hold in March.

He said: “As president of the AFN, I expect that the entire board should fashion out plans that will move our athletics forward. But a situation where a few individuals are trying to drag us backward won’t be tolerated. If by Saturday, these same people refuse to show up for the meeting, the board will go ahead and take decision on our preparation for the African Games and other issues. Enough is enough.”

Okowa described as ‘total rubbish’ a statement credited to three AFN board members, who said they boycotted the meeting because the audit report was not included in the agenda.

Some AFN board members had issued a statement on December 31, saying that they boycotted the board meeting because the report and African Games preparations were not in the agenda.

“Someone drew my attention to their press statement late on Sunday evening, and I feel so disappointed because as former athletes, I expected them to show more concern on issues affecting the athletes and their preparation for major championships. That is missing from them.

“How can they say that some board members criticised the decision for giving less than 16 hours’ notice for the meeting? The decision to hold the board meeting on December 31, 2023, was taken during our last meeting on December 10. So, how come they are deceiving Nigerians in their press statement?

“As I said, people should put aside their personal hatred for others and work for the progress of Nigeria’s athletics.”

Dangote Refinery Expecting Another Shipment of Crude

Preparations are underway for the commencement of production at the Dangote Refinery, as the company has received it’s fourth crude shipment of one million barrels of bonny light crude supplied by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited; NNPCL, while awaiting the fifth crude shipment anytime soon.

A statement from Dangote Refinery on Monday read in parts, “The fresh one million barrels of crude was the fourth consignment to be delivered to the Dangote facility out of the six million barrels of crude being expected by the world’s largest single-train refinery.

Recall that Dangote Refinery had earlier received three million barrels of crude.

Managing Director of Dangote Ports Operations, Mr. Akin Omole, had then told newsmen at the Dangote Quay, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos that the Refinery will receive about four million crude shpment before the end of 2023.

He said the refinery will get the remaining two by the early of January 2024.

He said the crudes supply would put the Refinery in good stead to commence operation. Once the six million barrels are fully delivered, it will facilitate the initial run of the refinery. It will also kick-start the production of diesel, aviation fuel, and LPG before subsequently progressing to the production of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS (petrol).

The latest development will play a pivotal role in alleviating the fuel supply challenges faced by Nigeria as well as the West African countries.

Designed for 100% Nigerian crude with the flexibility to process other crudes, the 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Petroleum Refinery can process most African crude grades as well as Middle Eastern Arab Light and even US Light tight oil as well as crude from other countries.

Police on Trail of Akwanga LG Chairman’s Kidnappers

The Police Command in Nasarawa State says it is investigating the abduction of Safiyanu Isa-Andaha, Chairman, Akwanga Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, by gunmen.

DSP Ramhan Nansel, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, stated this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lafia.

The PPRO said Umar Nadada, Commissioner of Police in the state, had mobilised personnel to go after the hoodlums and rescue the chairman and one other person who were kidnapped unhurt.

The police spokesperson said they got information that the chairman and one other were abducted around 8:30 p.m. in Ningo village of Akwanga LGA.

The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, are currently on the trail of the kidnappers to ensure the release of the council chairman and the other victim.

Nansel therefore urged members of the public, especially people from villages in the area, to provide the police with useful information that would lead to the rescue of those abducted and the arrest of the perpetrators.

Also, Mr Haruna Kassimu, Special Adviser (SA) to Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and close associates of the LG boss confirmed the incident.

January 2, 2024 Labour Laments Government’s Committment to Agreements

Labour Laments Government’s Committment to Agreements

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said the Federal Government has not demonstrated sufficient commitment towards complying with its agreements with its members.

The NLC, in its end-of-year message, lamented that the N35,000 wage award has not been faithfully implemented just as the Port Harcourt Refinery has not come on stream as projected. It added that the National Minimum Wage Negotiation Council has not been inaugurated as agreed.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the compressed natural gas (CNG) scheme has been distorted by agents of government for the benefit of a few. He said last year was, undoubtedly, a major test of workers’ collective strength and resilience, where they faced uncertainties, overcame obstacles, and witnessed moments that left them feeling disheartened. He said labour would engage the government more this year to ensure that the agreements it reached with it on October 2, 2023, are implemented. He said it was highly insensitive of the FG to allow its citizens to go hungry during the Yuletide season, by denying them the benefit of their hard-earned December 2023 salaries.

According to him, Nigerians are watching the chest-thumping and visitations as if in triumphalism against the collective will where food and drinks were lavished by public officials while workers are not paid and are left in starvation over one spurious reason or the other. He urged the FG to show more compassion in its dealings with Nigerians and Nigerian workers especially in the face of the excruciating poverty which its policies have foisted on hapless Nigerians.

The NLC chief said divisions along the nation’s various primordial fault lines rather than healing became exacerbated in 2023, mainly because of the unfortunate activities of politicians who played them up in their bid to win elections. He said this has caused the nation to become more divided than ever with growing suspicion and increasing trust deficits along those lines.

Citizens’ confidence in the government is therefore deeply wounded causing a further disconnect between the people and governments as the government continues with policies that negate the welfare of citizens. We observe only a few pockets of progress in governance in some states but largely, the instruments of governance are mainly deployed for the sole benefits of those who believe they have captured the instruments of governance and thus use them for their sole benefit,” he said.

He described the year 2023 as a turbulent year both for workers and Nigerian people as the negative economic policies of the government begin to bite harder on poor Nigerians as predicted.

According to him, workers continue to grapple with the worst forms of deprivations, thus being unable to meet their basic needs while transportation to work continues to be a nightmare.

The Nigerian masses have experienced the worst form of angst and suffering as access to basic nutrition has become more difficult while education and basic social utilities have become the sole purview of the rich. This year’s festive season has been made so difficult for the masses that the usual joy associated with the season was replaced with worries and anxiety all over the nation.

“Government’s half-hearted attempts at providing succor was largely mere propaganda and never had any impact on the high cost of transportation across the nation.

Our Naira continues in its free fall in all markets while governments both federal and state governments continue in their reckless borrowing and spending in the name of governance. We are worried at the haste with which those in government rush to eat the future of Nigerians by borrowing and frittering them away putting the future of our unborn generation in jeopardy.

“As it stands today, Nigeria needs about 12% more than our annual revenue to service our debt stock, meaning that we have to borrow to ever be able to service our debts. Another debt trap has been unleashed on the population. Governments should act more responsibly in its debt activities,” he said.

However, in the face of the adversities, Ajaero, said it was crucial to recognise that it may have seemed hopeless at times, “but we firmly believe that together, we can make 2024 better. The spirit of unity and solidarity that defines our great nation has seen us through numerous trials in the past, and it will undoubtedly guide us toward a brighter future.

“That future can only come with our resolve to act together as we reposition ourselves to act better and more creatively to grapple with the forces that are holding our nation’s down in a cesspool of underdevelopment and misery. The Nigeria Labour Congress is committed to providing the necessary leadership as we move into the new year to ensure that we responsibly hold the government accountable and nudge it towards working for the benefit of the majority.

“To this end, NLC will be committed in 2024 towards ensuring that a living wage becomes possible for all Nigerian workers by working with others to secure a National Minimum Wage that approximates the dictates of the various parameters that make incomes humane and grants access to necessities of life for the average worker.”
