Government Set to Review Law on Suicide Attempts

The Federal Government has pledged to review the law imposing sentencing for suicide attempts.

 

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince LATEEF FAGBEMI, SAN, said FG would liaise with the 36 States to reappraise the extant laws prohibiting suicide.

 

The AGF, in a statement he made available to newsmen said he gave the assurance when he received a delegation from the Asido Foundation, a non-governmental organisation – NGO.

 

The NGO promotes mental health advocacy and reforms with a view to improving awareness, reducing stigma, discrimination as well as empowering persons with mental disorders and their families.

 

He identified the provision of quality health care as a major priority area of the President BOLA TINUBU-led administration.

Akwa Ibom Schools to Resume May 6

all Public and Private Primary, Secondary and Technical Schools in Akwa Ibom State will resume for Third Term 2023/2024 academic session on Monday 6th May, 2024.

 

Parents and Guardians are advised to facilitate the return of their children and wards to school on the resumption date as academic activities will immediately begin in earnest.

 

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Lady ROSE BASSEY, the Heads of schools are expected to have resumed at least 3 working days to resumption date, for a pre-resumption meeting with their staff to further prepare for the success of the term, as directed by the State Government.

 

Management of schools and teachers are hereby implored to be diligent in discharging their duties as government will not condone lateness of teachers to School or students’ loitering during school hours.

 

The Ministry of Education on behalf of the State Government, wishes all pupils, students and teachers a fruitful and successful 2023/2024 academic session.

Governor Umo Eno to Train Permanent Secretaries at ASCON

Governor UMO ENO, has disclosed plans to train all Permanent Secretaries through the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), stressing the need for adequate capacity building.

 

Governor ENO, who stated this at the May edition of Government House Monthly Covenant Service, held at the Banquet Hall, Uyo maintained that government will turn some of its idle assets, both within and outside the State, to profitable ventures.

 

Governor ENO also disclosed his plan to overhaul the Ibom Icon Hotel for maximum utilisation, adding that the planned recruitment of health workers in the State will follow a fair and transparent process.

 

He stated that the recruitment examination will be computer-based, in compliance with international best practices; urging interested candidates to strive to be selected on merit.

Nigeria Governors Forum Assures Labor of Improved Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, has assured the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, and the workers of an improved and sustainable minimum wage.

 

Despite May Day celebrations on Wednesday, the government refrained from announcing a new minimum wage, citing its reluctance to accept labour’s proposal.

 

The NGF, in a communique signed by its Chairman and Kwara State Governor, ABDULRAHMAN ABDULRAZAQ, stated that it is assessing each state government’s fiscal capacity and the potential effects of different proposals to determine an enhanced minimum wage that can be feasibly sustained by the states.
