Federal Government Revamps National Gold Purchase Programme

The Federal Government has revamped the National Gold Purchase programme, in a bid to improve the country’s reserves and boost the value of the Naira.

This policy came to the fore when the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, DELE ALAKE presented the latest gold bar sourced from artisanal and small gold miners and refined by an agency of the Ministry to President BOLA TINUBU in Abuja.

ALAKE lauded the President for supporting reforms in the solid minerals sector, assuring that the sector will in no distant time boost the nation’s reserves.

First Lady of Akwa Ibom State Empowers Widows in 31 Local Government Areas

In commemoration of the 2024 International Widow’s Day, the Akwa Ibom State First Lady, Pastor PATIENCE UMO ENO has celebrated and empowered some widows across the 31 Local Government Areas and non-governmental widow’s platforms in the State.

The maiden Widows Enhancement Programme organised by the pet project of the Governor’s Wife, Golden Initiative for All – GIFA, held at the Banquet Hall, Government House Uyo, where no fewer than 250 widows smiled home with cash and gift items.

The First Lady maintained that the International Widows Day is a reminder for everyone to identify and appreciate the widows for their contributions and value to the society.

Pastor PATIENCE ENO who thanked her husband, Governor UMO ENO for making it possible for every woman to be recognized in the state, said the event became expedient to raise awareness of the violation of human rights that widows suffer in many countries following the death of their spouses.

She frowned at various harmful widowhood practices and noted that Akwa Ibom State had long domesticated the Widowhood law of 2013 and VAPP law of 2020, warning that the law would catch up with anyone troubling widows in the state with outdated traditional practices.

40 Athletes to Represent Nigeria at African Athletics Championship in Douala

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, (AFN) has unveiled the names of 40 athletes who will represent the country at the 2024 African Senior Athletics Championship in Douala, Cameroon.

Top on the list are women’s 100m hurdles world record holders, TOBI AMUSAN, ESE BRUME AND CHUKWUEBUKA ENEKWECHI.

Other prominent names on the list are, FAVOUR OFILI, FAVOUR ASHE and CHIDI OKEZIE. All the athletes secured qualification for the competition at the Nigerian Athletics trials held in Benin City, Edo State this week

The 2024 African Senior Athletics Championship will run from today, 21st Friday, to Wednesday, 26th June 2024.

The athletes are expected to use the competition as part of their preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris

Debt Management Office Pegs Nigeria’s Debt Stock at N121Trn

The Debt Management Office has disclosed Nigeria’s total debt stock has risen by 24.33 Trillion Naira in the first quarter of 2023 to 121.67 Trillion Naira from 97.34 Trillion Naira of December 2023.

The office in a statement on Thursday disclosed that the total public debt comprises of debt from the total domestic and external debts of the Federal Government, the thirty-six state governments, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It highlighted that excluding naira exchange rate movements in the first quarter of 2024, only the domestic debt component of total public debt grew from 59.12 Trillion Nairaon December 31st 2023, to 65.65 Trillion Naira on March 31st, 2024.
