NCDC Give Cholera Updates, as Death Toll hits 63

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention – NCDC has revealed that Nigeria has recorded over 2,100 suspected cases of Cholera outbreak across 33 states of the federation.

 

According to the centre, this marks a significant increase from the 1,579 cases reported just a week ago, highlighting the rapid spread of the disease.

 

Briefing journalists on the measures deployed against the outbreak, the NCDC Director General, JIDE IDRIS put the case fatality rate at 3.0 percent, noting that the cases were recorded as of June 30th, 2024.

 

According to IDRIS, Lagos, Bayelsa, Abia, Zamfara, Bauchi, Katsina, Cross River, Ebonyi, Rivers and Delta State contributed about 90 per cent of the cases.

 

The Director General identified inadequate toilet facilities, poor sanitation and inadequate safe water as factors militating against cholera eradication in the country, adding that the recently activated National Cholera Multisectoral Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) is providing strategic coordination.

President Tinubu Makes Appointments into CREDICORP

President BOLA TINUBU has approved the appointment of qualified Nigerians to the Board of the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation – CREDICORP.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, AJURI NGELALE in a statement in Abuja said that the appointment was to further expedite the process of expanding consumer credit access to Nigerians.

According to the statement, OTUNBA ADEREMI ABDUL, an Independent Non-Executive Director has been appointed as the board chairman of the nine-member board, while Engr. UZOMA NWAGBA is appointed as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer.

Mrs. AISHA ABDULLAHI is appointed as the Executive Director of Credit, Risk & Portfolio, while Miss. OLANIKE KOLAWOLE is the Executive Director Operations.

The new members of the Board are expected to bring their vast experience, competence, and dedication to bear in their functions to achieve CREDICORP’s mandate of accelerating access to consumer credit to millions of Nigerians.

NLC Frowns at Governors Attempting to Hijack Minimum Wage Negotiations

The Nigeria Labour Congress – NLC has described state governors’ interference in the national minimum wage negotiation as unconstitutional.

The head of information and public affairs for the NLC, Comrade BENSON UPAH stated this in Abuja, explaining that the major issue in the minimum wage negotiation with the government is prioritisation and political will.

Comrade UPAH described the governors’ desire to take over the negotiation as completely irrational, warning that placing labour on the concurrent list could lead to a multiplication of laws, making it difficult for investors to navigate the legal landscape.

He also noted that there could be potential socioeconomic consequences if states were allowed to set their own minimum wages.

Akwa Ibom State Government Clear Air On Sunrise to Sunset Operations at Victor Attah International Airport

The Akwa Ibom State Government has affirmed that the Victor Attah international airport is safe and fully operational, with its airfield lighting and all other safety accessories intact and functional.

The current sunrise to sunset operation approved by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is in place to facilitate the completion and integration of the rapid exit way at the 21axis of the active runway of the airport.

A statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade INI EMEMOBONG indicated thatthe completion of the rapid exit way is critical to the taxi way becoming fully operational and that as soon as the construction works are completed, the airport will revert to regular scheduled operations.

The statement also added that the current administration, led by Governor UMO ENO is dedicated to maximizing the state’s potential in the aviation industry.

TheMaintenance, Repair and Operations – MRO and other critical infrastructure at the airport are currently receiving priority attention and the contractors are on site working assiduously to ensure timely completion.
