President Tinubu Announces the Ministry of Livestock Development

President BOLA TINUBU has announced the creation of a Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, a move expected to end the perennial clashes between pastoralists and farmers.

President Tinubu approved the creation of the ministry on Tuesday when he inaugurated the Presidential Committee on Livestock Reforms at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja.

An excited Tinubu believes the creation of the ministry will resolve the lingering impasse.

Who says the solution is far? I say, ‘No, the solution is here.’ Majority of you have great experience and you want Nigeria to prosper,” he said.

To enable Nigeria to finally take advantage of livestock farming, we have seen the solution and opportunity for this adversity that has plagued us over the years and I believe the prosperity is here in our hands.”

Recall that in September 2023, president TINUBU had announced plans to secure land for ranches and livestock production, stressing that the measure was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to resolve the longstanding farmer-herder crisis.

Senegalese President Calls for Reconciliation in ECOWAS

Senegalese President and West Africa’s ECOWAS “facilitator,” BASSIROU DIOMAYE FAYE has called for dialogue and peaceful reconciliation with three countries that recently split from the bloc.

Recall that the military leaders of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso broke away from the Economic Community of West African States earlier this year and formed a confederation of their own.

ECOWAS heads of state met in Abuja on Sunday and deplored the “lack of progress in interactions” with Burkinabe, Malian and Nigerien authorities, who came to power in a series of recent coups.

The three countries’ decision to leave was fuelled in part by their accusation that France was manipulating ECOWAS and not providing enough support for anti-jihadist efforts.

Mini bus and tricycle operators in Akwa Ibom State have called on the state Governor, Pastor UMO ENO to intervene in the conflict between them and the ministry of transport, regarding the biometric capturing and re-registration of transporters.

The drivers under the aegis of Township Drivers Association (TDA) Akwa Ibom State said that they had already carried out the same process of capturing, having paid exorbitant fees to obtain the registration slip and fleet numbers, explained that the ministry asking them to do another capturing in this biting economic situation amounts to double jeopardy.

He frowned at the non-compliance to the court order by agents of the ministry who continued harass, arrest, detain and impound vehicles as well as torture of drivers on the basis of biometric regime.

Comrade UDOFIA gave an assurance that members of the union, as law abiding citizens, will not resolved to self-help but allow the due process of the law take its course while urging the ministry and it’s agents to also obey the court order.

While calling on drivers to remain calm, comrade UDOFIA appealed to the Governor to declare a state of emergency in the transport sector.

Narrating their ordeals in the hands of ministry agents, some of the drivers lamented the harassment, torture and humiliation suffered in the hands of the ministry agents.

The drivers explained that the situation has made life unbearable to many members as the impounded vehicles are their only source of livelihood and sustenance of their families.

The Association noted that a letter of appeal has been sent to the Governor in respect to their predicament with the hope that the ministry would cease it’s incessant harassment and molestation of commercial drivers and release impounded vehicles to the affected drivers.
