Describing sports as a multi-billion-naira sector, Elder Bassey said good investment in sport has great socio-economic effects and benefits in the society, with profitable returns.
The Sports Commissioner stated this when he played host to Nigerian-born, United States-based heavyweight boxer Enobong “The Nigerian Gentleman” Umohette in his office.

Akwa United, Heartland Relegated on Final Day of NPFL 24/25

Akwa United have been relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League after a narrow 2-1 loss to fellow droppers; Heartland FC on the final day of the 2024/2025 season.

ISAAC NASSY opened scoring just two minutes into the match at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri,  before DANIEL EKPO made it 2, CHISOM ORJI pulled one back for Akwa United, but it was a little to late for the promise keepers, sealing Akwa United’s drop to the second division just four years after they lifted the league title in 2021.

It was a must-win clash for both sides, with Heartland also fighting to avoid relegation. But while Heartland’s fate was still dependent on other results, Akwa United’s slim survival hopes rested on victory and favourable outcomes elsewhere. Unfortunately for the Promise Keepers, neither came.

The result means Akwa United finish the season with 44 points, not enough to stay afloat as Katsina United, Niger Tornadoes, and El-Kanemi Warriors all secured crucial results to remain in the league.

Reconciliation talks Collapse in the PDP as Wike Blames Makinde for Party’s Woes

Hopes of the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) abating has been threatened, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, NYESOM WIKE on Sunday, pulled out of all reconciliation agreements previously reached within the opposition party.

The crisis is rather worsening with this latest development, as the FCT minister points accusing fingers at the Oyo State Governor, SEYI MAKINDE, who he says should be blamed for the  problems rocking the Party.

In a statement NYESOM WIKE personally signed, he also accused key party leaders, including Enugu State Governor PETER MBAH of betrayal, dishonesty, and serial violations of mutual understandings.

In the statement, the FCT minister traced the roots of PDP’s internal turmoil to the aftermath of the 2023 general elections and pledged to fight on, until justice is attained.

The PDP which had shifted its National Executive Committee Meeting again, slated for May 27, had put in place a reconciliation committee led by Senator BUKOLA SARAKI to address the lingering issues and grievances of members displeased with actions by the party.
