Women Protest Against Emergency Rule in Rivers.

In neighbouring Rivers State, Women in the State have staged a protest against the declaration of a state of emergency in the state, describing President BOLA TINUBU’s decision as a politically motivated move aimed at undermining democracy.

The women, led by NANCY CHIDI NWANKWO, opposed the emergency rule, arguing that the situation in the state did not pose any genuine threat to national security.

They are demanding the immediate restoration of all democratic institutions in Rivers State, including the reinstatement of the elected governor, SIMINALAYI FUBARA.

The group also appealed to respected Nigerians, including former presidents and diplomats, to intervene and urge President BOLA TINUBU to reverse what they termed a grave injustice.The women reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful resistance, vowing to continue their stand in defense of freedom, justice and self-determination.

Nigeria to Play the Unity Cup, as Chelle Offers Chance to New Players

The Super Eagles head coach, ERIC CHELLE has said that the Unity Cup will provide him the opportunity to beef up his team with new players.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, Black Stars of Ghana, Reggae Boys of Jamaica and Soca Warriors of Trinidad and Tobago will compete in the 2025 edition of the competition.

CHELLE kept faith with majority of the regular stars for the last month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

 The Malian declared that he will call up new players to strengthen the team.

The Unity Cup will run from May 27 to May 31, 2025.

All the matches will be played at Brentford’sGtech Community Stadium in London.

NERC Fines DisCos Over Non-Compliance With Meterring Rules

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has fined Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola Electricity Distribution Companies the sum of 628 million naira for non-compliance with the capping of estimated billing for unmetered customers.

 

The commission conveyed the sanction in a release today.

 

It explained that the action was a sequel to a review of billing practices between July and September 2024, which revealed that the affected DisCos failed to adhere to monthly energy caps issued by NERC.

 

NERC also said that the fines represent five percent of the gross overbilling during the period under review.

 

Besides, NERC also mandated the affected DisCos to provide credit adjustments to all overbilled customers by May 15, 2025, coinciding with the end of the April billing cycle.

Federal Government Warns of Heavy Rainfall and Flooding in States of the Federation

The Federal Government has predicted heavy rains and floods in 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The high-flood risk state includes Akwa Ibom and other states across the country.

 The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, JOSEPH UTSEV, on Thursday, said coastal and riverine flooding would be experienced in some parts of the South-South geopolitical zone of the country due to a rise in sea level.

 Utsev stated this during the public presentation of the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) in Abuja.

 The 2025 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) was segmented into three parts to address the pressing challenges of flood disasters and provide information for mitigation, especially in the most vulnerable communities

 The minister disclosed that flooding remained one of the most devastating natural disasters in Nigeria with climate change accelerating its frequency and severity.

He revealed that 1,249 communities in 176 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across 30 states and the FCT fall within high-risk flood zones this year, while an additional 2,187 communities in 293 LGAs face moderate flood risks. Key risk areas include Abia, Benue, Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Jigawa, among others.
