Special Report: “Ekpo Masquerade” Fast Becoming a Menace in Akwa Ibom State

Masquerade practice in Africa is an integral element of the African cultural heritage. Its meaning transcends human differences and this dates back to the pre-historic African society.

Ekpo, as being called by the Ibibio and Annang people of Akwa Ibom state is believed to represent the ancestral spirits and acts, serving as bridge between the living and the dead.

Regrettably, while some communities use this cultural display to instill discipline and correct ills among members, others use it to cause havoc.

In August, 2022, the police authorities in Akwa Ibom state announced the ban of masquerade activities across the state. The order enjoyed popular media coverage in both national tabloids and electronic media firms.

The ban followed the use of the culture as instrument of threat, murder and other anti-social manifestations in the community, thus violating the original intention of these cultural practices.

This special report examines the ordeal of the family of Mr THOMAS UKOABASI, whose members are seeking intervention following a reign of terror on them from those who disguised as ekpo masquerades.

The family of UKOABASI THOMAS in Edem Ibiok, Ibesikpo represents victims of cruel treatments meted out by some culprits, whose aim is to unleash terror on fellow community members. Mrs. ANIEMA UKOABASI narrates her ordeal. She speaks in vernacular.

In addition, IMABASI THOMAS UKOABASI’S experience of the masquerade molestation is far a cry from the African social ideals. She speaks in vernacular. Do take a listen.

To further corroborate the claims as expressed above, Miss PRINCESS UKOABASI, one of the daughters in the family had this to say.

From the foregoing, the UKOABASI’sfamily is in fear. They seem to have lost all their fundamental human rights to a set of persons who are supposed to be their kinsmen, watching their back and looking out for them in communal love.

Another member of the family, a farmer and one of the victims who escaped death by the whiskers, ETIDO THOMAS is worried of their safety and that of his farm produce as he narrates the attacks by the impersonators.

The situation in Edem Ibiok, Ibesikpo has prompted an outcry, especially with the fact that even the village head, Eteidung UWEM OKON EDET is appearing unsure of the source of the problem and what action could restore order in his community. He also speaks in vernacular.

At the time of filing this report, Mr. THOMAS UKOABASI, the man whose finger was chopped out was indisposed to speak to the press.

The mill of justice they say grinds slowly, but it is instructive to note that delayed justice is justice denied.

Eteidung UWEM OKON EDET’s claimed efforts to salvage the problem are perceived as unsatisfactory to the victims. This may be due to the lack of corresponding outcomes.

Therefore, the people’s cry at this point is getting louder as they seek government’s adequate intervention.

The use of masquerade practice as instrument of dehumanization, humiliation, marginalization, fermenting hatred, envy and jealousy against fellow members of the community is unacceptable in the African sensibility.

Akwa Ibom State has the reputation of being one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria. While peace and security remain cardinal in the Governor UMO ENO’S ARISE Agenda, perpetrators of violence must be apprehended and made to face the law, in a bid to deter others from finding the enterprise lucrative.

Dismantle all Non-Security Check-Points Immediately.

The acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, yesterday asked commissioners of police in the 36 states of the federation and Federal Capital Territory, FCT, to commence immediate dismantling of all non-security checkpoints within their areas of responsibilities, and arrest violators for prompt prosecution.

He also gave commissioners of police yet to establish the complaints response units, CRU, three weeks within which to do so in their command headquarters to combat corruption.

Speaking at a strategic meeting with DIGs, AIGs and command CPs, Egbetokun assured that the Police would provide adequate security for the governorship elections coming up in three states of the federation, saying there was no need for worry.

He said: “We are aware of the challenge posed by the continued presence of unauthorized persons on the various highways around the country, in the guise of revenue collection, who constantly constitute nuisance on the highways by obstructing the flow of traffic, and engaging in mischievous activities, such as the seizure of vehicles, collection of fines and other unlawful activities.

“With just three states having their gubernatorial election, the Police are not burdensome because there are proper and adequate personnel on ground for the election.

Just as we have seen in other isolated elections, we have availability of more men in number than the one of the general elections. I have no fear about how safe and secure the election which is going to take place on November 11 2023, will be.

“Its very convenient for us to deploy. Nobody should entertain fear about the security of the November election. We have prepared. We are ready and very soon, we will start deployment.

We deliberately decided to take this year’s Police conference and retreat to one of the states we are having the election. The conference and retreat are coming just less than two weeks to the election.

“So, it is deliberate and not by accident that we chose the venue and date. It is also to show to the public that we are ready for the election. So, there is no fear for the coming election.”

He, however, called on the electorate and politicians to play by the rules of election, and shun any form of violence.

NANS Dare DSS, Says Protests Will Hold

The National Association of Nigerian Students has warned the Department of State Services not to interfere in planned protests by students, as their rights to protest was a fundamental human right.

The National Public Relations Officer of the union, Giwa Temitope, was reacting to the statement made by DSS that some politicians were mobilizing student leaders for violent protest against the Federal Government over socio-economic issues.

The DSS had raised alarm over plans by Politicians to mobilize student bodies to stage violent protest on the same day the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal; PEPT, has set aside to deliver judgement.

Intelligence reports have indicated that the plotters include certain politicians who are desperately mobilizing unsuspecting student leaders, ethnic-based associations, youth, and disgruntled groups for the planned action,” the spokesperson for the security agency, Peter Afunanya had stated on Monday.

The NANS PRO, in a statement sent to Journalists, said the student body would be be at the University of Lagos  for the protest and urged the DSS not to infringe on the rights of students.

, “It is quite embarrassing that the DSS has derailed to become the propaganda arm of the Federal Government, thereby, raising false alarms and even interfering in affairs that do not in any way relate to their line of profession.

“As an association, we maintain that we are not satisfied with how the Nigerian society is being run, most especially, as regards arbitrary fee increment across our tertiary institutions, with the University of Lagos being a model.” Giwa said

NANS said the failure of the UNILAG management to honour the agreement reached at the meeting with student leaders on August 2, “forced the student body to fix a date of action at the university for September 6 and the protest will hold till the management reverses the hike.

The UNILAG management in July 2023, increased fees from N19,000 to N190,250, for students studying medicine, while for courses that require laboratory and studio, the students were to pay N140,250.

We have Uncovered Plans to Stage Violent Protests in The Country – DSS

The Department of State Security; DSS says it has uncovered plans by some elements to stage violent protests across the country. This was contained in a statement made available to Inspiration FM which read;

The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby informs the public that it has uncovered plans by some elements in parts of the country to stage violent protests in order to discredit the Federal Government and security agencies over sundry socio-economic matters. Intelligence reports have indicated that the plotters include certain politicians who are desperately mobilising unsuspecting student leaders, ethnic based associations, youth and disgruntled groups for the planned action. Meanwhile, the Service has identified the ring leaders of the plot as well as sustained monitoring around them in order to deter them from plunging the country into anarchy. In view of this development, University Vice-Chancellors and Heads of Tertiary Institutions are advised to discourage their students from engaging in acts capable of derailing public peace. Also, parents and guardians are enjoined to admonish their children and wards respectively to shun the lure of participating in inimical behaviours or conducts against law and order. While the DSS is aware of Government’s efforts and determination to resolve some of the challenges confronting the nation, it warns those desirous of subverting national security to retrace their steps. This is more so that it will not hesitate to legally come against persons and groups behind the devious plans.

The Statement was signed by the Service’s Public Relations Officer; Peter Afunanya, Ph.D, fsi.
