EFCC Warns of New ATM Card Swap Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has alerted Nigerians about the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) Debit Card swapping fraud.

EFCC issued this warning in a statement signed by spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, with the Commission inundated with barrage of complaints from well-meaning Nigerians concerning unauthorized withdrawals from their bank accounts.

Oyewale in the statement said investigations by the Commission have linked such complaints to ATM Debit Card swapping fraud.

“The modus operandi of fraudsters involved in this nefarious practice involves keeping a debit card of the same bank, and in the guise of helping a confused bank customer at any ATM point, swaps the card in such a hurry that the customer would not notice and at the same time memorises the pin used in trying the fake cards,” he said.

He stated that these cards get stuck in the machine due to a wrong pin and the fraudster quickly abandons the victim, advising him or her to report to the bank while making away with the victim’s card to make immediate withdrawals from the account.

Oyewale said this card swapping typically happens in any service delivery point, such as Point of Sale (POS) terminals, ATM points, among others.

The fraudulent practice is gaining momentum across the country and the banking public has been enjoined by the EFCC to be more circumspect in the use of debit cards.

The Commission added that in view of the foregoing, the following tips may be useful in avoiding further financial losses by the banking public: Cards should be kept in sight or a safe place.

“Whenever you get your card back after making any payment, make sure it is actually your card and not just one that looks similar. Regularly check your bank statements for any unknown transaction,” Oyewale said.

“Set transaction alerts to monitor any activity on your accounts or with your bank card. Cover the keypad with your hand or body when entering your PIN at POS terminal/ATM machines.

“Do not be in a rush to make payments or withdrawals and request for assistance only from officials of the bank. Call your banks to block your ATM cards immediately when your cards are stuck in the ATM machines or whenever you observe any irregularity.

“Ensure you know your bank’s ATM offline blocking code and quickly make use of it whenever it is misplaced or stolen. Dial the USSD code *966*911# and follow the pop-up instructions to block your ATM card instantly.”

Oyewale said the EFCC will not relent in safeguarding personal, corporate and national finances in its quest to rid our nation of all forms of economic and financial crimes.

November 10, 2023 Police Name Nembe, Sagbama, Kolokuma-Opokuma and Southern Ijaw as Bayelsa Flashpoints

Police Name Nembe, Sagbama, Kolokuma-Opokuma and Southern Ijaw as Bayelsa Flashpoints

The Nigeria Police Force has identified four local government areas of Bayelsa State as the most politically volatile council areas in the state, ahead of the Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

This is as it assured the people of the state that it would ensure a peaceful atmosphere before, during, and after the polls through adequate deployment of men and officers in collaboration with sister-security agencies.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police supervising the South-South zone, Daniel Sokari-Pedro, who disclosed this during a meeting with election stakeholders at the Police Officers’ Mess in Yenagoa on Thursday, said the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was committed to a free and fair electoral process.

Sokari-Pedro, who is in charge of Election Management Security in Bayelsa, said the three senatorial districts of the state were also violence-prone and listed the five local governments as Nembe, Southern Ijaw, Brass, Sagbama, and Kolokuma/Opokuma, adding that “almost all the local government areas are politically volatile” as far as the election was concerned.

The incumbent Governor Douye Diri, who is the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, is from Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA, while his All Progressives Congress counterpart, Timipre Sylva, is from Brass LGA.

He said, “It is a known fact Bayelsa State is a peaceful state. Nevertheless, it is, election-wise, a volatile state. The three senatorial districts that make up the state are politically volatile. And some of the local governments and flash points have been identified in the three senatorial zones.

These include Sagbama, Nembe, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Southern Ijaw and, I think, Brass. Almost all the local governments are politically volatile. But the ones I have just mentioned are the most volatile. I mentioned Nembe, Southern Ijaw, Brass, Sagbama, and Kolokuma/Opokuma.”

The DIG, who was accompanied by his deputy on election duty in Bayelsa, AIG Ebong Eyibio, and the AIG Zone 16 headquarters in Yenagoa, AIG Paul Odama, also read the riot act to troublemakers, particularly violent youths and their sponsors, to steer clear of voting centres across the state.

Sokari-Pedro further said, “Unfortunately, the youths have been identified as vanguards and merchants of election savagery. And the so-called godfathers and principals have been known to be purveyors and patrons of those evils.

“You will agree with me that the trend of election brigandage is becoming a norm for two reasons. One, erstwhile, when suspects are arrested, they are treated with kid gloves. Secondly, the sponsors are likely not arrested. If arrested, they are not prosecuted. This encourages a culture of impunity.

“But we are assuring the peace-loving Bayelsans that in this election, not only the proxies will be dealt with, their identified principals will equally be dealt with. Take note. The fate that befalls the proxies will be visited on the principals.”

Rivers State House of Assembly Serve Impeachment Notice on Sim Fubara, Despite Fire Incident.

The crisis rocking the Rivers State government has taken a new turn, as the state Assembly reportedly signed an impeachment notice on Governor Siminalaye Fubara this Morning (Monday October 30).

In a session presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon Martins Amaewhule and attended by a good number of members, the Leader of the House, Hon Edison Ehie and those loyal to the governor were suspended.

It was gathered that the explosion that occurred in the Assembly on Sunday night was alleged to have been a ploy to stop the lawmakers from gaining access to the Assembly on Monday. The incident was blames on by suspected political thugs.

As early as 7 a.m., some lawmakers made their way into the House and immediately commenced plenary where they all signed the impeachment notice on the governor.

The arsonists had carried out the act on the hallowed chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly at about 9:45pm, causing uneasy calm around the assembly complex where the State Police Command also stands.

In a Video that was trending on Facebook, the Governor was seen reacting to the purported impeachment notice.
