Nigeria Customs Targets N6bn Revenue in 2024

The Nigeria Customs Service has revealed plans to generate at least N6 trillion as Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the Federal Government next year.

The Comptroller-General, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, stated this at the 2024 budget defense before the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation yesterday in Abuja.

Adeniyi said that the cash was higher than the N5 trillion originally projected in the budget.

I share the optimism of increasing the revenue to N6 trillion in 2024. So, N6 trillion revenue in 2024 is possible,’’ he said.

The Service would be able to generate the N6 trillion revenue if the Federal Government reduced concession grants in 2024.

‘’The new law will also help us to facilitate a number of issues that will make revenue generation possible,’’ he said.

He frowned at frequent import waivers by government, saying that it was one of the factors that had impeded revenue generation.

’If we can get N1.8 trillion in one year that shows the N6 trillion revenue for 2024 is achievable,” he said.

He said many of the goods at the ports were yet to be cleared, adding that when the NCS looked into its system, a number of bill laden were not opened.

He said when an internal audit was conducted, it showed that the NCS realised over N11 billion from that exercise, adding that there were still lots of goods yet to be cleared.

Speaking on import duty exception, Adeniyi said it was usually a presidential order given through the Minister of Finance.

Rep. Abubakar Bitchi, the Chairman of the Committee, commended Adeniyi for his efforts to generate more revenue for the government.

Is there a possibility to increase your revenue, we will be glad if you can make it N6 trillion for 2024,’’ he said.

Kidnapper Nab Woman and 3 Children in Abuja

Bandits attacked the Zone 5 segment of the Kubwa Extension 2 Relocation Estate along Arab Road in the Federal Capital Territory on Sunday night, kidnapping a woman and her three children, including a six-month-old baby.

Reports from the capital city confirmed that the gunmen struck  between 8pm and 9pm on Sunday, December 10, shooting indiscriminately and causing pandemonium in the area. A resident who preferred not to be named revealed that kidnapping  has become a usual occurrence in the area every December.

Another resident noted, “This kidnapping is due to a lack of adequate security in the area. Last night they kidnapped a whole family – a mother and her three children, including a six months old baby here at Zone 5, Kubwa Extension 2 Relocation estate.”

The FCT Police Command was yet to make an official comment concerning the development, when contacted by our correspondent, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh; who’s currently in Akwa Ibom for the Police PRO’s conference promised to find out about the development and revert.

I will find out and get back to you as soon as possible please,” Adeh said.

Nigerian Army Bombs Kill Scores in Kaduna

The accidental bombing of Tudun Biri in the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State by the Nigerian Army on Sunday, which left no fewer than 85 villagers dead has sent waves of outrage across the country.

Residents of the affected communities said they were celebrating Maulud, an Islamic event when the bombs were dropped by the military, a development that triggered both local and international condemnation.

The Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, Hadiza Balarabe, had to visit Islamic clerics in the state to douse tension, as the Governor of the state, Senator Uba Sani, ordered a thorough investigation into the bombing to forestall future occurrences.

As the state government moved to douse tension, the Christian Association of Nigeria, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International, among others, condemned the recurrent erroneous bombings by the military.

No fewer than 425 persons including children and women had been killed by military accidental bombings between September 2017 and 2023.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force, on Monday, denied responsibility for the Kaduna village incident.

The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, said the service had not conducted any operation in the state and its environs in the last 24 hours.

He added that the Air Force was not the only organisation using armed drones in the North-West.

The statement read, “The news making the rounds alleging that Nigerian Air Force aircraft accidentally killed innocent civilians in Kaduna is false. Please be informed that the NAF has not carried out any air operations within Kaduna State and its environs in the last 24 hours.

“Also, note that the NAF is not the only organisation operating combat-armed drones in the Northwestern region of Nigeria. It is also important to ensure that due diligence is always exhausted by the media before going to press with unverified and unconfirmed reports.

4 Months On, Prospective Corp Members from Akwa Ibom Still in Kidnappers Den

The eight Akwa Ibom State graduates abducted on their way to the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Sokoto State are yet to regain their freedom, almost 4 months since abduction.

The prospective corps members from Akwa Ibom State were travelling in an AKTC bus to Sokoto State for the mandatory national youth service programme for Nigerian graduates.

Since their abduction, parents and relatives of the victims have been expressing concerns that the NYSC authorities and security agencies were not doing enough to secure the release of their children.

In September, the parents took to the street to protest, saying they had spent over N13m in an effort to have their children back.

The kidnappers had demanded that the parents of each of the abductees should pay a ransom of N10m, an amount the parents said they could not raise.

Despite the assurances from security agents that the victims would be released, none of them has been freed as of December 4, 2023.

Some Nigerians have called for the scrapping of the NYSC scheme, while some others opined that individuals be allowed to serve in their geopolitical zones or states.
