Court Sets Aside Reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi in Kano

Justice ABDULLAHI LIMAN of the Federal High Court, Kano, has set aside the reinstatement of MUHAMMADU SANUSI II as the Emir of Kano Emirate.

Though the judge, on Thursday, refused the application by Emir AMINU ADO BAYERO to declare the amended Kano Emirate law null and void, he overturned all the actions taken by Governor Abba Yusuf after the controversial law was amended by the Kano State House of Assembly on 23rdMay, 2024.

Justice LIMAN faulted the governor’s assent to the bill and the presentation of an appointment letter to Emir SANUSI on 24thMay, 2024 despite an order of court directing all parties to maintain status quo.

Rivers Crisis: Court Reserves Rivers House of Assembly Appeal Judgement

the Court of Appeal in Abuja has reserved judgment in the appeal brought by the former speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, MARTIN AMAEWHULE, and 24 others against the Speaker, VICTOR OKO-JUMBO and five others.

 The court decided to adjourn after all parties involved in the case presented their arguments.

 During the virtual session held on Thursday, AMAEWHULE and the others requested the court to halt the implementation of a high court ruling that removed them from office, pause any further actions in the case, and nullify any decisions made by JUMBO while in office.

 They also sought a speedy resolution of the matter, arguing that the trial court overstepped its authority.

Police Orders Continuous Blockage of Local Government Secretariats in Rivers State

The Inspector General of Police, KAYODE EGBETOKUN, said his men would continue to barricade all local government secretariats in Rivers State amidst the ongoing political tension.

He also said the recent controversy surrounding the recruitment of police constables is really appalling, as he highlighted the rigorous standards expected of officers.

EGBETOKUN made this known on Thursday in Abuja while addressing journalists on the sidelines of a meeting with Commissioners of Police and other senior officers.

He disclosed that policemen will not leave the headquarters until a court judgment on the controversy over the tenure of local government council chairmen in the State.

EGBETOKUN said the presence of the police officers was to ensure peace and order and not to intimidate anyone.

The Commissioner of Police, OLATUNJI DISU, has assured the people of the state that he and his men won’t allow the crisis enveloping the Local Government Areas (LGAs) to lead to a breakdown of law and order.

 

CP DISU noted that the police are aware of the situation at the different LGAs and expect the different political players to respect the appeal and cease hostilities pending the hearing and determination of their case.

 

CP DISU warned that his men are equal to the task of securing the different council headquarters and won’t tolerate any attempt to disturb the peace in the state.

 

Meanwhile, the Local Government Chairman of Emohua in Rivers State, CHIDI LLOYD, who has insisted that he won’t leave office after the expiration of his tenure on June 17, has announced an empowerment scheme for residents of his local government area.

 

LLOYD in a statement by his media aide, BRIGHT JOSSY, noted that the council under his leadership would distribute machetes and other tools as farm implements to support the development of agriculture in the area.
