NUJ Frowns at State of Insecurity in Nigeria

The Nigeria Union of Journalists has condemned in the strongest terms, the continuing violence and kidnappings in various parts of the country.

This latest act of  which led to the abductions of two Journalists and members of their families in Kaduna state over the weekend have once more highlighted the general state of insecurity in the land and the continuing threat to the safety of journalists in the country.

The kidnapped journalists include ABDULGAFAR ALABELEWE, of the Nation Newspaper who also serves as chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kaduna State Council, and ABDULRAHEEM ABDU, a journalist with Blueprint newspaper.

While acknowledging the enormous challenges faced by the country’s security apparatuses in their various theatres of security-related engagements, NUJ calls on the authorities, especially the security agencies to leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of the kidnappers and to ensure the safe recovery of the victims.

According to a statement signed by the NUJ National Secretary, ACHIKE CHUDE, the continuing epidemic of violence and death in Nigeria must be brought to an end.

Rivers State High Court Bars Chief Judge From Dealing with Amaewhule Led Assembly

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has issued an Exparte Order of Interim Injunction barring the Chief Judge of the State and the Clerk of the State House of Assembly from dealing with the MARTINS AMAEWHULE-led State House of Assembly.

The order issued by Justice JUMBO STEPHEN also prevented the Chief Judge and the assembly Clerk from dealing with AMAEWHULE and 26 others as members of the Assembly, and from acting on any resolutions, articles of impeachment, or communications from them.

The suit marked PHC/2177/CS/2024 was filed by the Attorney General of the State as the first plaintiff and the Governor of the State, SiminialayiFubara, as the second plaintiff, against Martin Amaewhule and 26 others, as the first set of defendants, and

The court also ordered all parties to maintain the status quo ante litem as of 5thJuly, 2024, until the motion for an interlocutory injunction is heard and determined.

Federal Government Suspends Import Duties on Food Items

The Federal Government has announced the suspension of duties, tariffs, and taxes on some essential food items imported through land and sea borders.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, made this known during a press briefing at the National Press Centre, Abuja on Monday.

KYARI disclosed that the listed food items, which include maize, wheat, husked brown rice, and cowpeas, will enjoy a 150-day Duty-Free Import Window.

He added that the move is part of the Presidential Accelerated Stabilization and Advancement Plan, which is aimed at achieving food security and economic stability in the country.

British Prime Minister Meets First Minister to Scotland

British Prime Minister, Sir KEIR STARMER has met First Minister of Scotland JOHN SWINNEY for the first time since Labour’s landslide election win.

Speaking after their meeting, the prime minister said his new government got a clear mandate for change in the election, and one of the things that needed to reset was the relationship between the Scottish and UK government.

The new Prime Minister is touring the United Kingdom, and will next visit Wales and Northern Ireland before meeting mayors in England.

On the other hand, Mr SWINNEY said the pair had agreed to improve the relationship between the Scottish and UK governments, which had been very poor under the last Conservative government.

They committed to working collaboratively on areas of common ground, including growing the economy, delivering net zero and improving public services.
