Governor Umo Eno Calls for Calm Ahead of Army Conference

As the Nigerian Army concludes plans to converge in Uyo, for the 2024 Chief of Army Staff Conference on Tuesday, 20th August, the State Governor, Pastor UMO ENO, has advised citizens not to panic at the unusual presence of military personnel around town during the period.

The Governor also announced that the State will take delivery of a new Airbus A220-300 aircraft, at the Victor Attah International Airport on the same day.

This will be the second of ten Airbus aircrafts ordered for the State-owned airline that will be received by Governor Eno since assumption of office.

Governor ENO made this known during Sunday service at the All Nations Christian Ministry International, Eket Local Government Area and affirmed that the aircraft’s delivery is fallout of his recent engagement with the Airbus team in Maastricht, Netherlands.

He described the selection of Akwa Ibom State for the 2024 Chief of Army Staff Conference as a gesture well appreciated.

He also reaffirmed the readiness of his administration, through the Bulk Purchase Agency, to take delivery of truck-loads of food items which would be distributed to needy citizens, noting that the intervention is also aimed at  tackling the wanton increase of prices by retailers.

Reassuring every one of his commitment to serve Akwa Ibom people and to remain connected with the electorates, Governor ENO decried the recent cloning of his regular phone line by hackers and promised to restore the line.

VP Shettima Highlights the Positives of Local Government Autonomy on Basic Education

Vice President KASHIM SHETTIMA has said the recent Supreme Court judgment granting full financial autonomy to local government (LG) councils will enhance Nigeria’s universal basic education system.

The vice president, who warned against abuse of LG autonomy, stated this at the public presentation of a book in Abuja.

The vice president said the autonomy of local governments, which are directly responsible for providing primary education, will address the financial limitations that have hindered the alignment of administrative units with the government’s educational agenda.

SHETTIMA also assured Nigerians that the ongoing reforms initiated by President BOLA TINUBU will address inadequacies and ideologies frustrating universal education in the country.

She was arrested during a family visit last January in Yekaterinburg, about 1,600km east of Moscow.

United Nations Calls for Africa to Get Permanent Seat on Security Council

The United Nations  has called for the African continent to get a permanent seat at the UN Security Council as part of reforms to correct historical injustices.

The UN Secretary, Chief ANTÓNIO GUTERRES made the call, while stressing that the world has changed since 1945 and the changes ought to reflect in the composition of the Council, in order to keep the pace.

The Security Council, with five permanent members of which are China, France, Russia, the UK and the US – has long been criticised for representing the realities that prevailed at the end of World War II when much of Africa was still under colonial rule.

The 10 non-permanent members of the body are allocated by region, but unlike the five permanent members, they do not have the power of veto.

The African Union has long been pushing for the continent to have two permanent representatives on the council and an additional two seats as non-permanent representatives.

The UN Security Council has significant responsibilities, including authorising peacekeeping operations, imposing international sanctions and determining how the UN should respond to conflicts around the world.
