President Tinubu Appeals for Concerted Efforts to Address Enviromental Issues as Floods Ravage Parts of the North

, President BOLA TINUBU said he has received the news of the devastation wreaked by floods on communities and farmlands across the country with profound grief.

Recent data by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) indicate that lives have been lost — with thousands of hectares of farmlands damaged and thousands of people displaced by floods across the country.

Responding to the development, President TINUBU sympathized with all the victims, especially bereaved families, farmers, displaced communities, and those who have lost property.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, Chief AJURI NGELALE, President TINUBU e-emphasized the need for concerted effort to address existential environmental concerns and build more climate resilient and adaptive society

He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased, while assuring Nigerians that his administration, through the relevant agencies, will continue to provide the needed support for victims, as well as timely warnings to mitigate the impact of environmental mishaps.

AKISIEC Publishes Names of Qualified Candidates for 2024 Local Government Election

The Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) says it has published the names of candidates and their sponsors for the upcoming local government polls, across the 31 local government headquarters in the state and at the Commission’s head office, in Uyo.

AKISIEC notes that this development is in line with the elections’ timetable and relevant laws.

The commission stated that nominated candidates of the registered political parties whose particulars were verified by the Commission in the recently conducted verification exercise will contest for chairmanship and councillorship positions in the Local Government Election in Akwa Ibom State, scheduled for Saturday 5th October, 2024.

It also highlighted that In accordance with the AKISIEC Law, the period for withdrawal by candidate(s) or replacement of withdrawn candidate(s) by political parties shall commence today, Wednesday, the 28th to Friday 30th of August.

The state election body further indicated that the end of the replacement of candidates and the close of nominations are slated for 30th August 2024.

NNPCL Denies N6.8b Debt to International Oil Traders

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has refuted claims that it owes international oil traders 6.8 billion dollars.

The NNPC’s statement follows a recent report alleging that the oil giant was in debt to foreign oil traders and had failed to remit revenue to the Federation Account since January.

Reacting to this, NNPC, in a statement through its spokesperson, OLUFEMI SONEYE, dismissed the allegation as inaccurate.

The company explained that while it operates on credit terms in the oil trading business, it is up-to-date with its payments and maintains open credit lines with multiple traders.

Federal Government Places Embargo on Massive Recruitment to Accommodate New Minimum Wage

With the approval of the new minimum wage by President BOLA TINUBU, the Federal Government has declared that it will no longer tolerate massive recruitment into agencies without sanction or waiver, as well as selective promotions.

State House Permanent Secretary,  OLUFUNSHO ADEBIYI made this indication at the opening of a one-day retreat organised by the State House Management and Heads of government agencies under its supervision, as part of preparations for the issuance of the call circular for the commencement of the 2025 budget exercise.

According to the Permanent Secretary, the retreat deliberated on the need for strict enforcement of government policies and sanctions for defaulting agencies.
