July 4, 2023 10th Senate Set to Appoint Principal Officers, PDP Still Consulting for Choice Candidate

10th Senate Set to Appoint Principal Officers, PDP Still Consulting for Choice Candidate

There will be some air of Unease as the 10th Senate resumes today, and the tensions will not be unconnected to appointment of Principal Officers of the Senate. The All Progressives Congress (APC), with the largest number of members, is expected to produce the Majority leader, while the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ought to produce the Minority leader.

The APC has 59 senators, PDP has 36, Labour Party (LP) 8; Social Democratic Party (SDP) 2; New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) 2; Young Peoples Party (YPP) one and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) 1 each. This shows seven political parties making up membership of the 10th Senate, with 50 as opposition members.

APC is expected to produce the majority leader, deputy majority leader, chief whip and deputy chief whip. The four principal positions reserved for the minority caucus are minority leader, deputy minority leader, minority whip and deputy minority whip.

Nominations for the positions are purely the affairs of political parties with the majority of seats in the Senate. The major contenders for the Majority leader’s seat include Opeyemi Bamidele (APC-Ekiti) and Mohammed Ndume (APC-Borno).

The duo was among the arrowheads of Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s campaign for the senate presidency. Ndume served as the director-general of Akpabio’s campaign committee, while Bamidele was the deputy.

Adamu Aliero (PDP-Kebbi) and Aminu Tambuwal (PDP-Sokoto) are contenders for the Minority leader seat.

The PDP National Working Committee (NWC) met yesterday with Senators elected on its platform in a last-ditch attempt to forestall a showdown over the choice of persons for Minority leadership positions in the Senate. The meeting was held at the party’s National Secretariat, in Abuja.

The PDP rising from the meeting, resolved to write a letter to inform the Senate President that the consultations would continue until a unified decision is reached.

The statement reads in part: “At the meeting, the importance of a virile and stable opposition in the Senate and indeed the National Assembly was emphasised and the Caucus assured that it will play that important role in the defence of democracy, the interest and wellbeing of Nigerians.

“The PDP and Senators continue with consultations on the emergence of the Minority leadership in the Senate and are resolved to collectively present a unified leadership after due and conclusive considerations. Accordingly, the PDP will continue to provide the necessary leadership in this regard.

“Consequently, the meeting resolved that the PDP NWC communicates to the Senate President on the ongoing consultation in the Minority Caucus to the effect that the nominations into the Minority leadership positions has not been concluded and that upon conclusion, the nominated list will be formally conveyed to him appropriately for necessary action.”

NULGE Calls for 300% Increase in Workers Wages, Downward Review for Political Appointees

The Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has called for an upward review of local government workers’ salary by 300 per cent to cushion the harsh economic effects of fuel subsidy removal.
The union further called for a single institution to fix the salaries of workers and those of the political office holders to ensure parity in line with the single market system operating across the country.

NULGE’s National President Olatunji Ambali, who spoke yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital during the inauguration of the union’s Hotels and Suites, said there was need for urgent implementation of the Stephen Orosanye panel’s report to save cost of governance.

Ambali said all Nigerians, including the political office holders, should be ready to make sacrifices.

The union leader called for a downward review of the salaries and wages of government appointees.

“I believe the government should review the Orosanye Report and restructure the ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) so that at the end of the day we cut down the cost of governance. Not only that. The retinue of aids should be cut down and the salaries and wages of the political office holders should be reviewed downwards.

“We operate within the same market system in the country. There is no reason to have two bodies fixing wages and salaries. Labour is of the opinion that we should either put the task on the Salaries and Wages Commission or allow the Revenue and Fiscal Commission to take up the responsibility so that there will be parity in salaries and the same instrument will be used to fix salaries.

“That is the way to go. It is time to make available palliatives to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal. We are shocked that after one month of the removal, nothing has been done by the Federal Government.

“We are confident that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu knows what he is doing. But delay could be dangerous. It is time for him to sit down and address that.

“Salaries of workers should be immediately reviewed upwards because it would rub off on the market people and other informal sectors. We demand that the salary of workers be increased by 300 per cent to cushion the effect of the pain we are going through,” he said.

June 30, 2023 Military Orders Seniors to Service Chiefs to Retire Immediately

Military Orders Seniors to Service Chiefs to Retire Immediately

The Defence Headquarters has given top officers who are seniors to the newly appointed service chiefs till Monday July 3,2023 to voluntarily retire from service.

The order, contained in a memo dated June 26 and signed by Maj Gen Y. Yahaya on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, was directed to generals, brigadiers-general, air vice marshals, and rear admirals in the Nigerian Army, Air Force, and Nigerian Navy, who are senior to the new service chiefs.

The retirement of the senior officers across the three services was in line with the long-standing military tradition that officers who were senior to the service chiefs would be retired.

It is a tradition in the military that when a junior is appointed as a service chief, senior officers, who are ahead of him or her, would proceed on retirement.

The understanding is that senior military officers are unlikely to take orders from their juniors.

Tinubu had announced the immediate retirement of General Lucky Irabor who was the Chief of Defence Staff; the Chief of Army Staff, Lieut Gen Farouk Yahaya; the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, and Air Marshal Oludayo Amao, the Chief of Air Staff and replaced them with new military chiefs.

The new service chiefs are Maj Gen Christopher Musa who is the Chief of Defence Staff; the Chief of Army Staff, Maj Gen Taoreed Lagbaja; the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla while Air Vice Marshal Hassan Abubakar was appointed the Chief of Air Staff.

Obey Traffic Rules or Face the Music – IGP Egbetokun

The acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive ordering all police convoys to henceforth, as a matter of compulsion, obey all traffic regulations.

The IG gave the directive Monday during his meeting with the Mobile Police Squadron and commanders at the Force headquarters in Abuja.

According to him, the Force must lead by example if it is to command the respect of the general public. He therefore pledged to lead by example, promising to also observe all traffic regulations.

He said, “Let me end this speech by reminding you that those who keep the peace must be the epitome of peace. Those whose duty it is to enforce the laws of the land must themselves respect and obey the laws of the land. Without obeying the laws, the Police lack the moral high ground to interrogate and bring lawbreakers to book.

“Consequently, in line with my vision of building a rule of law compliant Police Force, it is my directive that henceforth all police convoys on routine, non-emergency movements must obey traffic lights and other traffic rules, I pledge to lead by example in this regard. As you will be returning to your various bases, I wish you a safe journey and please be assured of my best wishes always.”
