Darkness AGAIN! as Power Grid Collapses

There is a general blackout across the country following the total collapse of Nigeria’s electricity grid early Thursday morning.

The grid was reported to have collapsed totally around 12:40 a.m. on September 14, 2023, leading to the massive loss of supply to power distributors nationwide.

Multiple sources in the power sector, as well as electricity distribution companies, confirmed the development to our correspondent on Thursday morning.

Authoritative sources confirmed to Adebayo Samuel of Inspiration FM that the grid plummeted to a  273 megawatts of electricity coming from two out of the over 27 electricity generation.

This comes barely a week after the Transmission company celebrated 400 days of grid stability.

A number of Distribution Companies including the PHEDC confirmed to that the grid went down and  that most of their feeders are out.

As of 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, five generating plants were on the grid. Afam VI had 0.70MW, Dadinkowa was generating 0.00MW, Ibom Power had 32.90MW, Jebba had 240MW and Olorunsogo was on the grid with zero generation.

NANS Dare DSS, Says Protests Will Hold

The National Association of Nigerian Students has warned the Department of State Services not to interfere in planned protests by students, as their rights to protest was a fundamental human right.

The National Public Relations Officer of the union, Giwa Temitope, was reacting to the statement made by DSS that some politicians were mobilizing student leaders for violent protest against the Federal Government over socio-economic issues.

The DSS had raised alarm over plans by Politicians to mobilize student bodies to stage violent protest on the same day the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal; PEPT, has set aside to deliver judgement.

Intelligence reports have indicated that the plotters include certain politicians who are desperately mobilizing unsuspecting student leaders, ethnic-based associations, youth, and disgruntled groups for the planned action,” the spokesperson for the security agency, Peter Afunanya had stated on Monday.

The NANS PRO, in a statement sent to Journalists, said the student body would be be at the University of Lagos  for the protest and urged the DSS not to infringe on the rights of students.

, “It is quite embarrassing that the DSS has derailed to become the propaganda arm of the Federal Government, thereby, raising false alarms and even interfering in affairs that do not in any way relate to their line of profession.

“As an association, we maintain that we are not satisfied with how the Nigerian society is being run, most especially, as regards arbitrary fee increment across our tertiary institutions, with the University of Lagos being a model.” Giwa said

NANS said the failure of the UNILAG management to honour the agreement reached at the meeting with student leaders on August 2, “forced the student body to fix a date of action at the university for September 6 and the protest will hold till the management reverses the hike.

The UNILAG management in July 2023, increased fees from N19,000 to N190,250, for students studying medicine, while for courses that require laboratory and studio, the students were to pay N140,250.

We have Uncovered Plans to Stage Violent Protests in The Country – DSS

The Department of State Security; DSS says it has uncovered plans by some elements to stage violent protests across the country. This was contained in a statement made available to Inspiration FM which read;

The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby informs the public that it has uncovered plans by some elements in parts of the country to stage violent protests in order to discredit the Federal Government and security agencies over sundry socio-economic matters. Intelligence reports have indicated that the plotters include certain politicians who are desperately mobilising unsuspecting student leaders, ethnic based associations, youth and disgruntled groups for the planned action. Meanwhile, the Service has identified the ring leaders of the plot as well as sustained monitoring around them in order to deter them from plunging the country into anarchy. In view of this development, University Vice-Chancellors and Heads of Tertiary Institutions are advised to discourage their students from engaging in acts capable of derailing public peace. Also, parents and guardians are enjoined to admonish their children and wards respectively to shun the lure of participating in inimical behaviours or conducts against law and order. While the DSS is aware of Government’s efforts and determination to resolve some of the challenges confronting the nation, it warns those desirous of subverting national security to retrace their steps. This is more so that it will not hesitate to legally come against persons and groups behind the devious plans.

The Statement was signed by the Service’s Public Relations Officer; Peter Afunanya, Ph.D, fsi.

Akwa Ibom State Government Sacks Chinese Company Over Illegal Operations

The Akwa Ibom State Government has ordered a Chinese firm, Ruitai, to stop further mining operations in the state until it’s duly cleared by the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources.
The Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Uno Uno, handed down the order during an unscheduled inspection tour of the firm’s mining site, located in Esuk Ikim Akeme community, Ibeno Local Government Area of the state.
The commissioner was accompanied to the site by his counterpart in the Ministry of Internal Security. Brig- Gen. Koko Essien (retd), on Monday.
But speaking during a media interaction with newsmen on Tuesday, Uno said the inspection team discovered black clay-like minerals contained in sack bags of 50 kilogrammes, which the miners identified as Titanium Ore.
He said, “On critical examination of the site amidst tight security, the Managing Director and Director of the company, Zeng Zhonghuan and Huang Ying, were not available at the site. The available staff members could not provide any information or documents.
At the end of the inspection tour, we were able to discover that the company is purely an exploration company. Its Board of Directors comprises only Chinese, thus, not eligible to acquire the Small-scale Mining License as claimed.
“We also discovered that the Company has not conducted the Environmental Impacts Assessment in its mining operations and has not submitted the Environmental Management Plan, among other abnormalities.”
The commissioner said in view of the above anomalies, the inspection team recommended, “That Ruitai Mining Company should terminate its mining operations forthwith until due clearance legitimizing its operations is completed with the state government.
That the Company should approach the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources on or before Friday, 1st September, 2023, with all the relevant papers authorizing its operations, with full coordination of the area approved for its mining operations.”
That all security operatives should be withdrawn from the mining site, while the DPO of Ibeno LGA, SP Victor Ezekwu, should enforce the directive in order to ensure strict compliance,” the statement added.
