Labour Party Chairman Calls NLC A Thief

Labour Party’s National Chairman, Comrade Julius Abure, has leveled serious accusations against the Joe Ajaero-led Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its cohorts, alleging the misappropriation of funds earmarked for staff salaries during their recent intrusion into the party’s national secretariat.

In his first public address following the incident, Abure condemned the actions of the labour leaders, labeling them as shameful and displaying sheer rascality. Speaking through the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, Abure emphasized the unlawful nature of the NLC’s siege on the secretariat, which resulted in property damage and the alleged theft of significant sums intended for official purposes.

Describing the incident as regrettable and unacceptable, Abure stressed that no entity, including the NLC under Joe Ajaero’s leadership, is above the law. He lamented the destruction of property and the apparent misappropriation of funds, expressing concern that such actions could undermine the achievements made by the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections.

Responding to Abure’s claims, Acting Chairman of NLC’s Political Commission, Professor Theophilus Udubuaku, dismissed the allegations as baseless and accused Abure of selective memory. Udubuaku highlighted the circumstances surrounding the NLC’s intervention, asserting that their actions were necessary to address issues within the party.

Udubuaku challenged the credibility of Abure’s accusations, noting the presence of law enforcement officers and journalists during the picketing, which he claimed refuted claims of theft. He urged the media to scrutinize Abure’s statements and expose them as false, emphasizing that the NLC is not engaging in a media confrontation but expects the press to uphold journalistic integrity by verifying claims made by Abure and his associates.

Following a breach of privilege motion moved by Senator Olamilekan Adeola (APC Ogun West) against Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) over Ningi’s interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (Hausa Services), alleged that senior senators got N500m each.

Ningi was suspended for three months on Tuesday. He also resigned as the Chairman of the Northern Senators’ Forum.

Adeola had come under orders 9, 10, 41, and 51 to move a motion of privilege and issue of national importance against Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central) over Ningi’s interview with the BBC (Hausa Services)

Ningi, in the BBC interview on Friday, alleged that N3.7tn was not tied to specific projects in the 2024 budget.

Also, at a press conference on Monday, the senator insisted on the allegation, adding that he was not afraid of suspension.

Contributing to the debate on Tuesday, Senator representing (PDP, Cross-River North) Jarigbe Jarigbe said issues about the missing N3.7tn as alleged by Ningi had been clarified under the Government Owned Enterprises and the first line charge.

He said, “I thought this issue should have ended when the chairman of the Committee on Appropriation explained that the N3.7tn was under GOEs and the first line charge.

That explains everything. We are going back and forth on this issue and coming up with the issue of budget and individual issues concerning what comes into our various constituencies.

“If we want to go into those issues, all of us are culpable. Some senators here—the so-called senior senators—got N500m each. I am a ranking senator, but I didn’t get it. Did I go to the press? Most of you here got it.

However, when given another chance to speak, he clarified that it was Ningi who told him that some senators got N500m.

Federal Government Puts Launch of Students Loan Scheme on Hold

The Federal Government has postponed the launch of the Nigerian Students Loan Scheme indefinitely.

The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, Akintunde Sawyer, made this known during a television interview monitored by Inspiration FM.

President Bola Tinubu, shortly after inauguration had signed a bill to start a Students Loan Fund that would give interest-free loans to Nigerians for higher education.

A former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, proposed the bill and it was supposed to start between September and October 2023.

Meanwhile, Tinubu said the programme would begin in January 2024, after missing the October deadline.

In January, Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Sununu, said at a meeting that preparations for the program were finished. This included making the Student Loan Scheme website and planning how to start the programme.

Also, Tinubu told leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students that the programme would start once they added more features, like vocational studies.

However, barely 48 hours before the launch, Sawyer said the loan scheme was postponed due to some corrections that were being made around the launch.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to commit to a specific date. We are sort of waiting to ensure that all the stakeholders are aligned to make sure that nobody is blindsided, then we can actually roll this out in a meaningful, comprehensive, wholesome and sustainable way,” he said.
