April 9, 2024 EFCC Probing 50 Bank Accounts over N30Bn Humanitarian Ministry Recovery

EFCC Probing 50 Bank Accounts over N30Bn Humanitarian Ministry Recovery

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission; EFCC, says it is currently probing 50 bank accounts where it had recovered N30bn in the alleged scandals in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, who disclosed this in an interview published in the March edition of EFCC Alert, an in-house magazine of the anti-graft agency, also called for special courts for corruption cases.

Olukoyode, said the recovered fund was in the Federal Government’s coffers.

The EFCC is currently investigating alleged scandals in the humanitarian affairs ministry involving the suspended minister, Betta Edu, her predecessor, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, and Ms Halima Shehu, the National Coordinator of the National Social Investment Programme, an agency under the humanitarian ministry,

In January, Edu was suspended by President Bola Tinubu following an alleged fraud in her ministry.

She was subsequently interrogated by the EFCC after a leaked memo revealed that the suspended minister directed the Accountant-General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, to transfer N585m to a private account owned by one Oniyelu Bridget, who the ministry claimed currently serves as the Project Accountant, Grants for Vulnerable Groups.

The minister had claimed that the N585m payment was meant for vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states, describing the allegations against her as baseless.

The Media Assistant to the minister, Rasheed Olarewaju, said in a statement that it was legal within the civil service for such payments to be made into private accounts of staff members, especially project accountants.

Edu’s predecessor, Umar-Farouq, was also quizzed by the EFCC investigators in January in connection with the probe into the N37.1bn allegedly laundered during her tenure in office, through a contractor, James Okwete.

Apart from Edu and Umar-Farouq, the National Coordinator of the NSIPA is similarly being probed over alleged scandals in the ministry.

Shehu was arrested and questioned by the EFCC in connection with the movement of N44bn from the NSIPA account to some suspicious private and corporate accounts within the last four days in December 2023.

Giving an update on the probe, the EFCC chairman stated, “We have laws and regulations guiding our investigations. Nigerians will also know that they (Edu and Shehu) are already on suspension and this is based on the investigations we have done, and President Bola Tinubu has proved to Nigerians that he is ready to fight corruption.

“Moreover, with respect to this particular case, we have recovered over N30bn, which is already in the coffers of the Federal Government.

Olukoyode, in the publication obtained by The PUNCH on Monday, said the recovered fund was in the Federal Government’s coffers.

Peter Obi Supports Removal of Electricity Subsidy

The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has supported the decision of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s led government on a new electricity tariff for Band A consumers.

Obi, on Sunday, said removing the electricity subsidy for the rich is best.

Recall that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission approved a tariff increase on Tuesday last week for Band A customers.

Reacting to the development, Obi said that was the solution to Nigeria’s electricity challenges.

He stressed that a tariff increase for urban areas that can afford it is understandable.

“The solution is very simple (referring to electricity tariff hike), you can increase the tariff for those in areas where they can afford it.

“We must do a lot in power generation because it has taken so long. But we have to take into consideration that the majority of Nigerians are suffering.

“So we need to support people in those areas to be able to live and be able to produce something.

“When they start to produce something, we are pushing them out of poverty, and that’s where my theory of moving from consumption to production comes in”, he said.

Governor Umo Eno Terminates Nsit Atai/Okobo/Oron Road Contract Over Abandonment

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has terminated the contract for the Nsit Atai/Okobo/Oron Road abandoned for several years by successive governments.

The road had remained incomplete since the administrations of former Governors Godswill Akpabio (2007 – 2015), and Udom Emmanuel (2015 – 2023).

The contract termination followed complaints and protests by the people of the three local government areas and a socio – cultural organisation, the Oron Union.

Governor Umo Eno announced the termination during the funeral ceremony and thanksgiving service in honour of late Mrs Deborah Ekaette Imaikop Enoidem, mother -In-law of the Immediate past Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem held at Ikot Epkene Udo Village in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of the state.

Udo used the occasion to reel out projects undertaken by his administration in the Oro Federal Constituency in the last 10 months of his assumption of office.

These include the 2.1km Ukpong Street, 2.1km Essang Street, Orukim-Uyenge Universal Energy Road, Okopedi Road, by East West Road, Secretariat Oruko Eweme Road, and re-modernisation of Oron Bridge.

He assured that his administration was bent on executing more projects in Oro Nation, and indeed, the entire state.

Governor Eno disclosed that each of the 31 LGAs in the state has at least two projects currently ongoing and assured that the government “is judiciously spending government resources by channeling the funds into projects for the benefit of Akwa Ibom citizens.”

He also warned the people to desist from obstructing projects with illegal structures, in expectation of being paid compensation.

“There is no LGA in the State which at least two projects are not ongoing. By the grace of God, we will continue to do more. We are spending money on projects and people are working and making a living from those projects.

“We will continue to use the state money for this state. We will create jobs, and government will support hardworking people who are ready to work. Our administration will continue to touch rural people. During our campaign, I promised to serve you, and I will continue to serve you,” he stressed.

He reiterated that despite these hard times with excruciating cash crunch, his administration has not taken any loan to execute any of the ongoing projects in the state.

“All the projects we have been doing, we are proud to say, we have not taken one loan from any bank in the last 10 months. I believe that we can use the resources we have in this state to work for the our people.

“I thank the Oro People, our in- laws. I’m working for you, as I do with the entire state, and I will continue to work for you. I will serve you in Oro Nation by building on the foundation of my predecessor. We will do much more,” he added.

Senegalese President Names Opposition as Prime Minister

Senegalese President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye after being sworn-in went ahead to pledge systemic change after years of deadly turmoil and announcing his mentor, opposition figure Ousmane Sonko, as prime minister.

Faye, 44, has never previously held an elected office. He swept to a first-round victory on a promise of radical reform just 10 days after being released from prison.

He took the presidential oath in front of hundreds of officials and several African heads of state at an exhibition centre in the new town of Diamniadio, near Dakar.

He then returned to the capital, with his motorcade greeted by hundreds of jubilant residents who lined the roads leading to the presidential palace.

His predecessor, Macky Sall, symbolically handed Faye the key to the presidential headquarters before leaving the palace.

Few hours later, his new administration appointed firebrand opposition leader Sonko prime minister.

Mr Ousmane Sonko is named prime minister,” said Oumar Samba Ba, the general secretary of the presidency, as he read out a decree on the public television station RTS.

Sonko, 49, was at the centre of a two-year stand-off with the state that triggered bouts of deadly unrest.

He was disqualified from running in the most recent race and picked Faye as his replacement on the presidential ballot.

The former tax inspector is Senegal’s fifth president since independence from France in 1960 and the first to openly admit to a polygamous marriage.
