Council of Unions in Akwa Ibom State-Owned Tertiary Institutions Give 7days Ultimatum for Implementation of Retirement Age Policy

The Council of Unions in Akwa Ibom State-Owned Tertiary Institutions has issued a 7-day ultimatum to the State Government to implement the 65-year retirement age policy for non-teaching staff of the state-owned institutions.

The unions complained that non-teaching staff in Akwa Ibom state polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, College of Education, Afaha Nsit, and Akwa Ibom State College of Science and Technology, Nung Ukim, have for so long felt the pains of non-implementation of the policy despite persistent cries to the state government.

In a letter jointly signed by the Chairman, Council of Unions, Akwa Ibom State-Owned Tertiary Institutions, Comrade MICHAEL UKONYANG, Chairmen and Secretaries of member institutions, the unions vowed to embark on full industrial action if the government fails to attend to their demands.

They noted that they had sent a formal demand notice to the state government on May 13, June 11, and July 16 this year to implement the policy for members as other states of the federation, but the government considered it not worth paying attention to. Rather, they chose to implement the policy in favour of the academic staff while refusing to do the same to the non-teaching staff.

The unions maintained that the development highlights the discriminatory practices of the government, an act which has demoralized them, thereby affecting their motivation, productivity, and morals.

They, however, called on the State Governor, Pastor UMO ENO, to use his good office to approve the implementation of the 65-year retirement age for non-teaching staff, stressing that such a move will avert any industrial disharmony and maintain the existing peace.

INEC Chairman Tasks Media On Accurate Reporting

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, today reminded journalists of their sacred obligation to report factually and accurately about the Edo and Ondo State Governorship Elections, scheduled for 21st September and 16th November 2024 as well as all activities connected to them.
Speaking at the Commission’s quarterly meeting with the media in Abuja on Wednesday 31st July 2024, Prof. Yakubu urged media practioners to continue to be a “bulwark” against fake news, misinformation and disinformation, in compliance with the ethics of their noble profession.
The INEC Chairman also implored journalists to comply with the Nigerian Code of Election Coverage and the Commission’s Guidelines for Media Accreditation, available on the umpire’s website.
He reminded media organisations that the portal for media accreditation for the Edo State Governorship election, which opened on 8th July will automatically shut down on 5th September 2024.
His words: “As the Edo State Governorship election approaches, I wish to remind media organisations that the portal for media accreditation – http://imap.inecnigeria.org – is still open. As at 8.02am today, Wednesday 31st July 2024, 24 media organisations representing print, radio, television and online have uploaded the details of 227 personnel for the election. I urge you to expedite action by ensuring that all interested media organisations submit their applications before the deadline of Thursday 5th September 2024. This will enable the Commission to produce and deliver the accreditation tags for your reporters, camera operators, technical and other support staff in good time for the election.”
Giving an update on preparations, Prof. Yakubu said the Commission has recovered from the severe flooding that occurred at the State headquarters in Benin city two months go. The damage inflicted on the physical infrastructure, movebale and immovable facilities, he affirmed, are being fixed and replaced. Additional Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines have also been delivered to the State for both the training of election duty staff as well contigency for election day support.
He continued: “We have once again published the final list of candidates in compliance with the recent Court Order mandating the Commission to replace the running mate to the candidate of the Labour Party. The amended list is already published on our website.
“Following the conclusion of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), the display of the register for claims and objections by citizens, and further data clean-up using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), the final registers for the forthcoming Governorship elections are being finalised.
“Before the end of this week, the Commission will publish the final figures of new voters in the two States as well as their distribution by gender, age, occupation and disability. Thereafter, the timetable for the collection of uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) from previous registration, and new registrants from the latest CVR, will be published. Based on the information provided by the Commission, we look forward to your partnership in encouraging citizens to collect their PVCs.”
He also spoke on the ongoing campaigns in Edo and Ondo States, but he expressed concern about a recent incident in Benin-City which resulted in the death of security personnel.
He however assured the media executives that security in Edo and Ondo States will be a major issue for deliberation at the Inter Agency Cosultative on Election Security (ICCES) meeting scheduled for Friday 2nd August 2024.
“We are as concerned about the safety of your personnel and equipment just as we are about the security of our own officials, observers, service providers and, above all, the voters,” he said. “We will also work with the security agencies to ensure that accredited journalists are granted unimpeded access to all voting and collation locations.”
Responding, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo, commended INEC for its commitment to transparency and accountability in the electoral process through its constant engagement with the Media, stressing that the synergy between INEC and the Media was crucial as the off-season election approaches.
The NUJ President added his voice to the call for an amendment to the relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act 2022 to empower INEC to conduct Local Government elections across the country.
He declared: “The proposal to create an Independent Local Government Electoral Commission is, in my view, unnecessary. Establishing a separate body for local government elections could lead to redundancy, increased bureaucracy, and potential conflicts of interest. Instead, leveraging INEC’s established framework, experience, and resources would be a more efficient and effective approach to managing local government elections.”

Governor Umo Eno Assures of Continuous Partnership with UNIUYO To Further Development

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has assured the management of the University of Uyo that the state government, under his leadership, will continue to support and partner with the institution to further development.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the newly-constituted Governing Council of the University, led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdallah, he noted that the University, located in Akwa Ibom State, admits many Akwa Ibom indigenes. Therefore, it would not be ignored in the scheme of things.
Governor Eno, who is currently studying for a PhD at the institution, commended the management of the University for their commitment to academic excellence and innovations, particularly the approval for virtual presentations of seminars and other academic engagements.
According to the Governor, the innovation has afforded him the opportunity to present one of his seminars, a requirement for the completion of his PhD program.
Governor Eno commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, for defending the truth against blackmail and propaganda spread during the last electioneering period.
He welcomed the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Professor Abdallah, saying it was an honor to host the Governing Council of the University and assured the Pro-Chancellor of a great, peaceful, and memorable tenure at the University.
“Today, I am receiving the leaders of my University with great joy. The University of Uyo has produced so many outstanding personalities in this country, and I believe that one of the crowning moments is that you have produced a Governor.
“If there are areas you think we should work together, please let us know. Whatever we can do to give our support, we will do because, at the end of the day, some of the students there are from Akwa Ibom State. So, whatever we do for the University is for our people.
“That’s why, the last time I went to the University for an event, I saw the internal roads and said we should work on them. We will continue to do things to maintain the University as a product of that school. You are the mother, and you know that normally, no child forgets the mother,” he added.
The Governor urged the Pro-Chancellor to use his good office to attract more development to the institution.
In his remarks, the Pro-Chancellor expressed his delight over the landmark developments by Governor Eno in the state, by which he is currently standing tall among his contemporaries in the country.
He affirmed his commitment to furthering the development of the University of Uyo to ensure his Council leaves lasting legacies at the institution and solicited the Governor’s support to help deliver on some projects already identified to be pursued.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, speaking earlier, thanked Governor Eno for receiving the delegation.
He commended him for the support so far enjoyed by the University and his people-centric policies in the state, which he stated are responsible for the stability and peace in the state amid the ongoing nationwide protest.

Federal Government Places Protest Sponsors on Watchlist, Freezes Account

The federal government of Nigeria said it has identified some persons in the diaspora who are said to be sponsoring the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests, and have placed such individuals on a watch list and frozen their Nigerian accounts.

The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), KEMI NANDAP, said the sponsors on a watch list will be arrested when entering the country.

NANDAP made this known in Abuja during a Joint Press Briefing by the heads of security agencies and Service Chiefs convened by the Chief of Defence Staff, CHRISTOPHER MUSA at the Defence Headquarters.

The immigration boss said the service had, in response to the protest, deployed more officers to land borders and airports to ensure effective manning of those entry ports.

She said that NIS had also stepped up surveillance to prevent foreign intervention in the country.

On his part, the Inspector-General of Police, KAYODE EGBETOKUN, said the police had uncovered some sponsors but declined to give further information on them.

Mr EGBETOKUN said that some bank accounts of such individuals had been blocked, adding that many of them reside abroad.
