AKSACA Inaugurates Gender and Human Rights Response Team

The Akwa Ibom State Agency for the Control of AIDS (AKSACA) has constituted a Gender and Human Rights State Response Team to ensure that the Anti-stigma and discrimination bill is properly implemented.

On Tuesday, September 24, The State House of Assembly passed the Anti-Stigma and Discrimination Bill, as it awaits assent by the Governor, Pastor UMO ENO.

AKSACA at the committee inauguration ceremony said a Gender and Human Rights response team comprising key stakeholders in Akwa Ibom state will drive the mitigation of discrimination against persons living with HIV.

In his remarks, AKSACA Program Manager, DR ENOBONG AKPAN said it remains imperative to foster an inclusive society that respects the dignity and rights of all individuals.

Also speaking about the Akwa Ibom’s HIV profile, the Prevention Officer for AKSACA, Dr. EDITH IGBEMI said the state has recorded N12,000 new infections by 2023 and that to prevent spread of the virus, it is crucial to tackle stigma and discrimination.

Dr EDITH highlighted that the response committee is mandated to support the mainstreaming of gender equality and human rights, while responding to related issues on HIV, at the state level, as outlined in the HIV/AIDS policy and strategic framework.

A resonating submission was made by the state representative for the Joint United Nations on HIV/AIDS – UNAIDS, DR IDAYAT UTHMAN, who said that the response team needs to establish a structure for effective implementation of the law.

The Gender and Human Rights Response committee was therefore inaugurated by the Director of Public Health, DR ETOP ANTIA, who represented Akwa Ibom’s Commissioner for Health.

The members comprising stakeholders form the Ministry of Justice, the Human Rights Commission, the Police, Faith Based Organisations, Implementing Partners and others, have pledged commitment to their duties to achieve the epidemic control in the state.

Small business owners have described the new Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Monetary Policy Rate, MPR, as unfortunate, and have said that it is capable of further contracting businesses.

They added that as businesses contract, firms will downsize, leading to loss of jobs.

Recall that yesterday the CBN raised the MPR by 50 basis points from 26.75% to 27.25%. The CBN governor, Mr OLAYEMI CARDOSO, disclosed this at the end of the 154th Monetary Policy Committee, MPC, meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

The small business owners noted that the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, NBS announced that Nigeria’s unemployment rate grew by 1.2 percentage points to 5.3 per cent year-on-year, hence, the need to raise an alarm about the days ahead.

Senate Okays Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as New Chief Justice of Nigeria

The Senate confirmed the appointment of Justice KUDIRAT KEKERE-EKUN as substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria after screening, during yesterday’s plenary.

The development comes after President BOLA TINUBU wrote the Senate on Tuesday, seeking her confirmation as the CJN.

Senate President, GODSWILL AKPABIO, read TINUBU’s letter during plenary on Tuesday, where the President had expressed confidence in her nomination and urged the Senate to act urgently.

With her confirmation, KUDIRAT KEKERE-EKUN, is now the second Nigeria female jurist to serve as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, after Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, who was the Chief Justice of Nigeria between July 2012 and November, 2014.

Akwa Ibom Sets Up Petroleum Products Monitoring Committee Following Artificial Scarcity

Governor UMO ENO has approved the composition of  aPetroleum Products  Monitoring Committee.

The development was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince ENOBONG UWAH and released to newsmen today; September 25, 2024.

The statement indicated that the Petroleum Products Monitoring Committee will be led by the chairman, Right Honourable GODWIN EKPO with 12 members, including Commissioners of the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Internal Security and Waterways, as well as the Senior special Assistant to the Governor on Petroleum Matters, Sir VICTOR ETEFIA.

Other members of the committee are drawn from the Nigeria Labour Congress – NLC,  Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers -NUPENG, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria – IPMAN, the Ministries of ;Transportation, Information, the Police, and other security agencies.

The inauguration of the new Petroleum Products Monitoring Committee will take place on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the EXCO Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Uyo.
