Senate President Condemn Xenophobic Attack On Nigerians In South Africa

the President of the Senate AHMAD LAWAN has lamented the killing of Nigerians in South Africa, as he put the total death toll over the years at 118.

LAWAN, while receiving in audience the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, BOBBY MOROE, said 13 of those killed through various attacks, were murdered by South African policemen.

The Senate President condemned the continuous killing of Nigerians in South Africa, warning that further attack on Nigerians would no longer be condoned.

AHMED LAWAN added that the parliament must speak and prevent any further killings of Nigerians.

Also speaking, Acting Secretary, Nigerian Union in South Africa, COLLINS MGBO said the Nigerian government ought to do more to tackle the murder of Nigerians in that country.

NOA To Nigerians: Don’t Politicise Crime

the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to desist from politicising crimes in the country and unite in finding solutions to the problem.

The Director-General of the Agency, Dr GARBA ABARI made the appeal in a statement issued in Abuja by Mr. PAUL ODENYI, the Head, Press Unit, NOA.

This is coming as Nigerians condemn rising incidences of crimes in the country including the recent killing of Mrs. FUNKE OLAKUNRIN, daughter of Pa REUBEN FASORANTI, leader of Afenifere pan-Yoruba group.

ABARI said Nigerians should allow security agencies the space to deal with the disturbing cases of banditry and armed robbery rather than resorting to peddling political narratives and stereotypes.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan Visits Afenifere Leader Over Daughter’s Death

former President of Nigeria, GOODLUCK JONATHAN today paid a condolence visit to the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, PA REUBEN FASORANTI over the death of his daughter, Mrs. FUNKE OLAKUNRIN.

Speaking with journalists, JONATHAN described the incident as a painful occurrence to the whole country, describing the murder of Mrs OLAKUNRIN is an act of terrorism.

He called on the federal and state governments to be more proactive on the issue of insecurity in the country.

The former President explained that every government has its own challenges of security but there must be a solution to solve them.

While calling on the Federal Government to implement the report of the 2014 confab, JONATHAN said some of the recommendations in the report dealt with the issue of security and the government should apply the recommendations.

Senate Advocates For National Security Summit To Tackle Insecurity

The Senate has called for immediate convocation of a National Security Summit to address insecurity in the country.

This followed a point of order raised by Senator AYO AKINYELURE over the killing of Mrs. FUNKE OLAKUNRIN, daughter of Pa REUBEN FASORANTI, a leader of the Afenifere Group, who was shot dead by gunmen along Akure-Ore Road in Ondo State on Friday.

AKINYELURE expressed concern over the killing and similar ones, which he described as “increasing and incessant murder of innocent Nigerians by gunmen along major highways in the country.”

While Senator TOLU ODEBIYI called on the Senate to meet with the presidency and security formations to take immediate action, the Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, AJAYI BOROFACE, urged his colleagues to be cautious about linking a particular tribe as perpetrators of the attacks.

The President of the Senate, AHMAD LAWAN, on his submission equally lamented the situation, which he said was being felt across the country.The Senate in its resolution clearly condemned the killings, calling on the Inspector General of Police to extend his dragnet to fish out the perpetrators.
