Senate Advocates For National Security Summit To Tackle Insecurity

The Senate has called for immediate convocation of a National Security Summit to address insecurity in the country.

This followed a point of order raised by Senator AYO AKINYELURE over the killing of Mrs. FUNKE OLAKUNRIN, daughter of Pa REUBEN FASORANTI, a leader of the Afenifere Group, who was shot dead by gunmen along Akure-Ore Road in Ondo State on Friday.

AKINYELURE expressed concern over the killing and similar ones, which he described as “increasing and incessant murder of innocent Nigerians by gunmen along major highways in the country.”

While Senator TOLU ODEBIYI called on the Senate to meet with the presidency and security formations to take immediate action, the Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, AJAYI BOROFACE, urged his colleagues to be cautious about linking a particular tribe as perpetrators of the attacks.

The President of the Senate, AHMAD LAWAN, on his submission equally lamented the situation, which he said was being felt across the country.The Senate in its resolution clearly condemned the killings, calling on the Inspector General of Police to extend his dragnet to fish out the perpetrators.

Former Minister of Aviation, FEMI FANI-KAYODE, has cautioned Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore over its call for the arrest of former President OLUSEGUN OBASANJO.

The National Secretary of the group, ALHASSAN SALEH, had criticised the former President over his letter to President MUHAMMADU BUHARI warning that the insecurity in the country could reach genocidal proportions.

But FANI-KAYODE, in a statement today, dared president BUHARI to arrest OBASANJO. He described the call for the former President’s arrest as “reckless, irresponsible, dangerous and unacceptable.”

The former minister stated that OBASANJO was attempting to save Nigeria from another civil war, adding that those who opposed the former President’s counsel failed to appreciate the fact that in the event of such a war, they would suffer more than anyone else.

Buhari To Critics: You Are Not Patriotic

President MUHAMMADU BUHARI has replied those who accused him of not doing enough to tackle the widespread insecurity in the country.

In an open letter on Monday, Former President OLUSEGUN OBASANJO criticised BUHARI’S government, saying killings must not be swept under the carpet, just as Nobel laureate, WOLE SOYINKA called for a national conference to address the killings in the country by suspected herdsmen.

OBASANJO said the rate at which things were going; Nigeria could experience a situation similar to Rwanda where there was genocide in 1994.

But speaking with national executives of the Buhari Campaign Organisation at Aso Rock today, the president, who did not specifically mention a name, said those criticising the “isolated cases” of insecurity in the country are not patriotic.

BUHARI said every country in the world is facing one security challenge or the other, adding that banditry and kidnapping happen across the world.

Zamfara State Director of Budget and 2 others Kidnapped, Deputy shot dead

Unknown gunmen in Zamfara State have killed the state’s Deputy- Director of Budget, Alhaji Kabiru Ismail and Kidnapped the Agency’s Director, Alhaji Hamza Salihu

According to the Director-General, Press Affairs to Gov. Bello Matawalle, Yusuf Idris in a statement released on Monday. He confirmed that the incident occurred near Kachia in Kaduna state, while the Zamfara State officials were on their way to Akwanga in Nasarawa state on an official trip.

“Zamfara State Governor, Dr Bello Matawalle, has described as terrible and disturbing, Sunday afternoon abduction of the state’s Director of Budget, Alhaji Hamza Salihu, who was abducted along with two other persons near Kachia in Kaduna State while on their way to Akwanga in Nasarawa State on an official trip.

“It is very unfortunate that while efforts are being strengthened to stop armed banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling and other crimes peacefully without any bloodshed, some bad elements who have chosen to remain unrepentant will still use security uniforms to stop and kidnap unsuspecting law abiding citizens,” he said.

As a result of this unfortunate event, the Zamfara state Government said they would cooperate with Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna state and all security agencies to rescue the victims, while noting that another lady was shot in the leg and abandoned at the kidnap scene in a pool of blood by the abductors.

Muhammad Auwal Hamza, son of the kidnapped Zamfara State Director of Budget also confirmed the sad incident.
