AKSEPWMA Nabs 158 for Violating Sanitation Exercise in Akwa Ibom

A total of 158 individuals arrested on Saturday for violating the monthly environmental sanitation exercise have been arraigned before the state’s sanitation court.

This was contained in a statement by the information and PR unit of the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA).

The offenders were arraigned before the Environmental Sanitation Court in Uyo, where Senior Magistrate AMANDA EFFIOM charged them with failing to participate in the monthly sanitation exercise, a violation punishable under Section 39 of the Akwa Ibom State Public Health Law.

Some of the accused pleaded guilty, while others denied the charges, leading to further proceedings.

The penalties handed down by the Senior Magistrate included community service and fines ranging from N3,000 to N12,000.

Governor UMO ENO had personally led the sanitation exercise on Saturday, which had a significant turnout of stakeholders, including the Commissioner of Police, traditional rulers, and winners of the AKSEPWMA essay competition.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won all the chairmanship and councillorship seats in all the 30 local government areas in Osun State.

The Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), HASHIM ABIOYE, announced this at a press conference at the weekend.

The commission defied warnings by the police and the Attorney General of the Federation, LATEEF FAGBEMI, to put the poll on hold.

Governor ADEMOLA ADELEKE, reacting to the outcome of the election, praised the electoral commission for being transparent, adding that the exercise was peaceful.

Meanwhile, the governor has sworn-in the newly elected chairmen as he administered the oath of allegiance and oath of office on the 30 local government chairmen and vice-chairmen at the Osun State Government House.

Pope Francis has asked Catholics to pray for him, as he continues to receive treatment in hospital for double pneumonia.

The pontiff was unable to deliver the traditional Angelus prayer in person for the second Sunday running.

The message comes after the Vatican revealed on Saturday that the 88-year-old’s condition continues to be “critical”.

In his message, released today, the Pope thanked the doctors and health workers at the hospital, and well-wishers who sent in messages.

The 88-year-old was first admitted to hospital on 14th February after experiencing difficulties breathing for several days.

Police in Akwa Ibom Rescue Kidnapped Victim, Recover Stolen Vehicle

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has rescued a kidnapped victim and recovered his stolen vehicle during a tactical operation in Ikot Ekpene.

According to the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSPTIMFON JOHN, the operation occurred on February 13, 2025 after a man was kidnapped along Okop-Eto Road and taken to an unknown destination by the kidnappers.

She explained that the operatives of the command, who swung into action, engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel, and were overwhelmed by superior firepower fled with severe gunshot injuries, leaving the victim unharmed, and has since been reunited with his family.

However, the PPRO said while the police are working to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects, investigations are ongoing to recover weapons used in the crime and bring those responsible to justice.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba MOHAMMED AZARE, commended the officers for their swift response and assured residents that the Command remains resolute in its fight against criminal elements in the state. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
