UNIVERSITY OF UYO MOURNS LATE KUBIAT AKPAN, DEMAND JUSTICE

It was a gloomy atmosphere on September 9, 2021,as students of the faculty of environmental studies from the University of  Uyo trooped out in procession  for their deceased colleague, KUBIAT ISAAC AKPAN who was allegedly tortured and killed in police custody.

The procession took off at the Uniuyo main campus at Ikpa road and capped off at the annex.

In attendance were scores of students, a number of lecturers and a representation of different unions of the university.

Addressing students at the procession, Dean of students’ affairs, Dr. ETEFIA EKANEM described the death of KUBIAT as a colossal loss to the university community.

The Family of KUBIAT ISAAC AKPAN, the 28-year old graduate of Architecture in the University of Uyo, who was allegedly arrested, tortured and gruesomely murdered by the police, is demanding justice for their son.

Briefing the press in Uyo, the lawyer handling the case, Barrister INIBEHE EFFIONG explained that KUBIAT was not sick, had no underlying illness, was not a cultist and was not being investigated for any crime.


Corroborating this, the deceased’s uncle, Mr. ENE INYANG, who noted that his slain nephew was the only male child of the parents, who are currently very sick, also stressed that he was a good boy and did not indulge in any criminal activity.
Barrister INIBEHE EFFIONG disclosed that autopsy carried out revealed that KUBIAT was tortured to death.

AKWA IBOM’S NLC CALLS FOR PROMPT PAYMENT OF ENTITLEMENTS FOR LATE PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, Akwa Ibom state council has called on the state government to allocate more funds to promptly settle the entitlements due the next of kin of late primary School teachers in the state.

The state chairman of NLC, comrade SUNNY JAMES in an interview with Inspiration FM emphasized that he is at the forefront of ensuring that the entitlements for the next of kin are duly paid.

Comrade JAMES added that more monies should be released by the state government to cover as many of them as possible.

According to comrade JAMES, there are also a number of primary school teachers who are yet to receive their leave grant for the past 10 years and need to be settled as well.

On the 9th of August, the next of kin embarked on a peaceful protest in front of the government house, although they were barricaded by the police from Division A located at barracks road, Uyo.

State executives of the University of Jos Alumni Association, Akwa Ibom State Chapter has urged all Akwa Ibom indigenes and residents to continue to pray for peace in Plateau State.

Chairman, University of Jos Alumni, Akwa Ibom state chapter, Dr. NDIFREKE OTUEKONG ATAIDE, via a statement commended Governor UDOM EMMANUEL for his timely intervention in evacuating Akwa Ibom students and corps members from Jos, Plateau state.

He stated that the evacuation became necessary following the precarious insecurity situation in Jos and subsequent closure of the institution.
