Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, the Alaafin of Oyo Join His Ancestors After 52 years on The Throne

Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, the Alaafin of Oyo, joined his ancestors at the age of 83.

The sad event that has rocked the entire Yoruba land happened in the late hours of Friday at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, according to palace officials.

The Alaafin’s Wives and Children have confirmed receipt of the monarch’s remains at Idi-Igba, Oyo town early Saturday morningfor the commencement of traditional rites pending further burial arrangements.

Oba Lamidi Adeyemi ruled for 52 years before his demise, making him the longest-reigning Alaafin.

According to Oyo tradition, the head of the Oyomesi, Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Ayoola, would take over pending the “Ifa” selection of a new Alaafin.

Oba Lamidi Adeyemi was born into the Adeyemi branch of the Alowolodu family on October 15, 1938, to Oba Adeyemi II, the former Alaafin of Oyo who was deposed and sent into exile in 1954 for having sympathy for the National Council of Nigerian Citizens NCNC.

He succeeded Alaafin Gbadegesin Ladigbolu II in 1970 and was crowned on January 14, 1971. He was a renowned lover of Boxing.

The newly appointed Commissioner for Agriculture; Akwa Ibom state, Dr Offiong Offor has charged management and staff of the ministry to sustain the tempo of performance which the ministry is known for in order to achieve the food sufficiency policy of Mr Udom Emmanuel’s administration.

Dr Offor who gave the charge during a familiarization meeting with Permanent Secretary, Directors and senior staff members  of the ministry and extension services officers promised to be responsive to the welfare of staff and diligent to the task ahead.

She commended her predecessor, Dr Glory Edet for landmark achievements in the Ministry under her supervision as Commissioner.

Presenting the Commissioner to members of staff, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Mary Ukoette lauded the governor for appointing another capable hand to replace the out gone Commissioner.

Other speakers including the Director Administration, Mr. Ifiok Udoh; Programme Manager AKADEP, Mr Ema Ekanem; Zonal Director, Dr Emmanuel; Mr Ime Akpadiaha for Senior Staff all pledged loyalty and cooperation to the Commissioner to achieve set goals in the ministry.

The Commissioner was taken round units and departments of the ministry as she reports for duty.

Police To Embark on 2 Weeks Warning Strike Over Working Conditions

Reports have emerged that Men and Women of the Nigeria Police force are set to embark on a two weeks warning strike across the country, to protest against poor working conditions. The planned two-week strike is proposed to commence on Saturday, March 26.

The officers are going on a warning strike to protest against their poor working conditions, poor salaries, lack of genuine welfare benefits and outdated weapons on the list of their grieviances also is the continuous killing of their colleagues by Criminals and terrorists, without adequate compensation for families left behind.

In a letter to the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, the aggrieved police officers accused the Federal Government of not being honest about the increment of police salary and other promised benefits.

They, however, demanded improved conditions of service, particularly salary increase and provision of modern weapons as they tackle the security challenges facing the country.

The police hierarchy is said to be working hard to avert the pending strike and quickly involved the Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi for his attention.
