Akwa Ibom State Government Spends N830Million on Payment of WASSCE Fees for Public School Students.

The Akwa Ibom State Government has reiterated its w commitment towards investing in the education sector of the State to ensure a better future for every Akwa Ibom child.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet made this declaration at the open briefing of Principals, supervisors and other examination functionaries for the 2022 WASSCE examination held at Community Secondary Commercial School, Aka Offot on Friday.

The commissioner called on key players and stakeholders in the education sector to collectively employ strategies and modalities towards delivering an examination devoid of malpractices and other negative vices in line with Governor Emmanuel’s zero tolerance to such tendencies, in the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Schools Candidates (WASSCE-SC) in the State.

Mrs. Etiebet stated that the Akwa Ibom State Government will be spending eight hundred and thirty million (N 830,000,000) to ensure that children in public secondary schools write the WASSCE examination this year.

Recounting that education is still free and compulsory at the basic level and highly subsidized at the tertiary level, the education boss reiterated the state of emergency declared in the education sector and the target given by Governor Udom Emmanuel last year for 80 percent of the students writing WASSCE to score a minimum of five credits in subjects including English Language and Mathematics and further appealed that the target percentage which has been increased to 90 percent this year be achieved.

While noting the increment of WASSCE fees from 13,900 to 18,000 this year, she maintained that Principals and supervisors are critical stakeholders in ensuring that the students receive qualitative education and graduate by their own efforts to make sure that they defend the certificate they are being issued.

The Education Commissioner noted remarkably the synergy that exists between the present administration in the state and the West African Examination Council (WAEC) over the years and commended WAEC, the WAEC Deputy Registrar/ and Zonal Coordinator, Engineer A. Adebolu and all the WAEC staff working in Akwa Ibom State who have done all it takes to make sure Akwa Ibom children come out with excellent results, adding that the supervision that goes on in collaboratively by the Ministry of Education, the school boards and the team from WAEC is highly commendable.

She thanked the teachers, Principals and supervisors in both public and private schools for the good job of teaching, grooming and tutoring the students especially those in exit classes to be equipped for the examination and enjoined them to do last minutes revisions with with their students by suggesting ways that can assist them in answering the questions correctly through acronyms and abbreviations to boost their retentiveness.

Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has resigned his position in the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari in line with the presidential directive for all political appointees interested in the 2023 elections to quit.

Buhari had today at the federal Executive council meeting directed that all members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) running for elective offices to submit their resignation letters oon or before Monday the 16th of May, 2022.

Although an Appeal Court earlier today had given judgement that appointees could keep their jobs while seeking to become their party standard bearers.

The other ministers expected to resign immediately are; Ministers of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio; Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ogbonnaya Onu and others who have all joined the presidential race on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Others are the Minister of State Mines and Steel, Uche Ogar, who is running for the governorship position in Abia State, and the Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, who declared her ambition to contest for the senatorial seat in Plateau State.

Lai Mohammed, while addressing journalists, stressed that the resignation excludes the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo because who an elected member of the cabinet.

President Buhari Orders Political Appointees Seeking Elective Offices to Resign

President Muhammadu Buhari, has ordered every member of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, who has a political ambition to contest elective offices in 2023 general elections to resign on or before Monday May 16, 2022.

Some of those affected include Ministers of Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio, Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; Science, Technology and Innovation, Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba; Justice and Attorney General, Abubakar Malami, who have joined the presidential race on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC)

Others are the Minister of State Mines and Steel, Uche Ogar, who is running for governorship position in Abia State, the Minister of Women Affairs, Paulline Tallen, who declared her ambition to contest for the senatorial seat in Plateau State.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, made the announcement while briefing journalists at the end of FEC meeting presided over by President Buhari.

He said he did not have the mandate to talk on the fate of other political appointees who are also vying for elective positions, but are not members of the cabinet

Project Alert Tackles Sexual Violence in Academic Institutions Through Advocacy Programme

In collaboration with African Women Development Fund (AWDF), Project Alert is initiating an advocacy strategy to address the spate of Sexual violence in Academic Institutions across Akwa Ibom state.

In this regard, PROJECT ALERT , a non-governmental organization that intervenes for women who are hit by sexual violence and other forms of abuse, has kick started the process with research to ascertain the enormity of the problem.

The organization aims to gather adequate Information through its investigations to ensure the intervention against Sexual violence in schools is data driven.

The process has commenced in earnest as advocates against violence and abuse deliberated areas to focus the investigations during a one day Research Methodology Workshop in Uyo on Tuesday April 26, 2022.
