NDLEA Takes War-Against-Drugs to Motor Parks

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it had intensified sensitisation programmes at motor parks and strengthened collaboration with NURTW, particularly in sharing of information.

Kabir Tsakuwa, Commander of Narcotics, (CN) NDLEA, FCT Command, said this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

Tsakuwa said that the support of transport union members at one of the motor parks recently, led to an interception of large consignment of tramadol and other drugs.

He, however, said that suspects in connection to the siezed drugs were arrested, adding that they had already been charged to court.

According to him, NDLEA maintains sustainable raid operations not only at motor parks and road sides, but all the identified black spots within FCT and its environments where drug activities are noticed.

“The Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and suburbs particularly, are as well raided at all times to dislodge all criminals who may want to take advantage of the locations.

“The record of arrest and seizures this year so far is a clear indication of the work being done day and night within the FCT and its environs, ” he said.

Tsakuwa said that the NDLEA had created operational outpost in some motor parks and other places like Apo, Wuse Zone 4, Area 1 Park, Torabora, Banex, Gwarimpa, Jabi, and Karu Abattoir.

He said that the places were some of the areas where drug activities were relatively high within the FCT.

“Effort is ongoing to create more outpost as directed by the NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, ” he said.

The NDLEA boss said that the command had created special squads that worked round the clock to deal with actionable intelligence in real time.

This, he said, would be with a view to curbing illicit drug activities through dislodgement of notorious drug joints and offenders.

According to him, as a command, NDLEA also leverage on the existing relationship with the communities to assist with reasonable information within their territory and locality.

“Additionally, the command collaborates with all security agencies in the FCT, where we share information and security concerns among the heads.

” We carry out joint operations with membership drawn from Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Military, NAF, Navy, DSS, NIS and NSCDC.

“The team is formed at the instance of Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) where criminal hide outs are continuously dislodged, ” he said.

Federal Government to Pay N-Power Arrears in November

The Federal Government has announced it will commence the payment of 9 months backlogs to N-Power beneficiaries who are on the programme beginning from November.

This was made known on Monday through the N-Power National Programme Manager, Mr. Akindele Egbuwalo, while meeting with some N-Power beneficiaries at his office in Abuja.

Egbuwalo in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, stated that the main purpose for the temporary suspension of the programme was to address all matters directly affecting beneficiaries.

He was quoted in the statement to have stated that as a result of the temporary suspension of the programme for thorough restructuring and forensic audit, funds had been recovered from the existing payment service providers.

Plans have been put in place by the programme to commence disbursement of the nine months outstanding stipends to beneficiaries from November 2023. Payments will be carried out in installment,” Egbuwalo stated.

He said the N-Power programme would be continued as the Renewed Hope Job Creation Programme under the supervision of the humanitarian minister.

Egbuwalo said the scheme would be expanded to target five million beneficiaries in five years, where one million youths would be absorbed each year under the graduate and non-graduate stream.

Sani Garba, a beneficiary from Yobe State, who was present at the meeting, said the concerns of beneficiaries were mainly regarding the delayed nine months stipends.

He said a national protest had initially been planned by different clusters of N-Power beneficiaries due to inadequate information.

October 16, 2023 “Mami Wata” Nominated for the International Feature Film (IFF) category at the 96th Academy Awards

“Mami Wata” Nominated for the International Feature Film (IFF) category at the 96th Academy Awards

C.J. Obasi’s critically acclaimed film, “Mami Wata,” has been selected by Nigeria to represent the country in the International Feature Film (IFF) category at the 96th Academy Awards.

The film received the highest votes from the 14-man Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) for the IFF which lauded the film for its “relevant theme – multiple generations of women at the forefront of society’s well-being, its unique approach to a story of pre and post-colonial African societies, as well as its technical and artistic excellence.”

NOSC’s announcement of “Mami Wata” as Nigeria’s contender for the IFF category is a significant step for Nollywood. While this is not the first time Nigeria has ventured into the Oscars territory, “Mami Wata” carries the promise of making an even bigger splash.

Written and directed by Obasi, the film is an exploration and creative reimagination of the mythology of a titular mermaid-deity of West African folklore, and one which, among other things, celebrates womanhood folklore. It exemplifies the diversity that defines Nigeria.

“I’m excited to announce a milestone in our NOSC journey: our first Pidgin film submission to the Academy, marking our commitment to diversity and global representation. I urge filmmakers not to relent in enhancing their skills, and elevate production to global standards,” said the new Chairperson of NOSC, Stephanie Linus.

Filmed in the Republic of Benin, “Mami Wata” explores a beach-side community grappling with newfound beliefs as a stranger washes ashore, disrupting their harmony. The film, which had its theatrical releases in Nigeria and other countries, earned the 2023 Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award for its striking black-and-white cinematography.

While the film’s next fate rests with the IFF Executive Committee, its path to the 96th Oscars, scheduled for March 10, 2024, is marked by high hopes.
