Cross River State Governor to Sanction Culpable Officials Over Boat Mishap

The Cross River Governor, Bassey Otu says there will be punitive actions against officials of the Marina Resort found culpable of having compromised on safety standards over the cruise boat mishap in Calabar .

This is contained in a statement issued by Gov. Bassey Otu’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Ogbeche.

It was reported that a boat carrying 14 medical students capsized on Saturday at about 3p.m. in the popular Marina Resort in Calabar, while  3 of the students are still missing, 11 others were rescued by men of the Nigerian Navy and villagers.

The students drawn from different tertiary institutions under the aegis of the Nigeria Medical Students Association (NiMSA) were in Calabar for their Annual Health Week .

They visited the Marina Resort as part of their social activities.

”The governorment is saddened over this incident. We charge security and rescue agencies as well as villagers involved in the operations to find the missing students and reunite them with their families,” Otu said.

He decried the safety standards at the resort, vowing that anyone found guilty to have compromised on safety would be severely sanctioned.

”The news of a cruise boat mishap at the Marina Resort, a tourist and relaxation destination in Calabar, is saddening and calls for concern to me, not only as your governor but as a parent.

”To imagine that the boat was overcrowded and some of those on it were without life jackets is of even greater concern and the more reason why the state government will be investigating the incident.

”All those found culpable of having compromised on safety standards will face the wrath of the law.

”As a government, we remain committed to protecting lives and providing an enabling environment for business, tourism,” he said.

According to him, any untoward action that derails the objective of the state will not be tolerated.

June 23, 2023 Oceangate Declares Occupants of The Titanic Submersible “Lost”

Oceangate Declares Occupants of The Titanic Submersible “Lost”

All the five men onboard a missing submersible near the wreck of the Titanic have been lost, according to Sub operator OceanGate.

The company confirmed this in a statement on Thursday.

“We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have sadly been lost,” it read.

It added that the “men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans.”

OceanGate also sent condolences to “every member of their families during this tragic time” while calling for privacy for them.

The confirmation came hours after a “debris field” was found by an underwater robot searching near the wreck of the Titanic for the missing submersible.

At a press briefing in Boston later Thursday, the US Coast Guard said the debris discovered on the ocean floor suggests the missing submersible near the wreck of the Titanic suffered a “catastrophic loss” of pressure,

“Upon this determination, we immediately notified the families,” Rear Admiral John Mauger told reporters in Boston.

“On behalf of the United States Coast Guard and the entire unified command, I offer my deepest condolences to the families.”

The missing submersible was carrying British billionaire Hamish Harding and dual Pakistani-British citizens Shahzada Dawood, a tycoon, and his son Suleman. OceanGate Expeditions charges $250,000 for a seat on the sub.

Also on board is OceanGate’s CEO, Stockton Rush, and a French submarine operator Paul-Henri Nargeolet, nicknamed “Mr Titanic” for his frequent dives at the site.

Ships and planes have scoured 10,000 square miles (around 20,000 square kilometers) of surface water — roughly the size of the US state of Massachusetts — for the vessel.

The Titanic’s watery grave is situated 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, and more than two miles below the surface of the North Atlantic.
