We have Uncovered Plans to Stage Violent Protests in The Country – DSS

The Department of State Security; DSS says it has uncovered plans by some elements to stage violent protests across the country. This was contained in a statement made available to Inspiration FM which read;

The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby informs the public that it has uncovered plans by some elements in parts of the country to stage violent protests in order to discredit the Federal Government and security agencies over sundry socio-economic matters. Intelligence reports have indicated that the plotters include certain politicians who are desperately mobilising unsuspecting student leaders, ethnic based associations, youth and disgruntled groups for the planned action. Meanwhile, the Service has identified the ring leaders of the plot as well as sustained monitoring around them in order to deter them from plunging the country into anarchy. In view of this development, University Vice-Chancellors and Heads of Tertiary Institutions are advised to discourage their students from engaging in acts capable of derailing public peace. Also, parents and guardians are enjoined to admonish their children and wards respectively to shun the lure of participating in inimical behaviours or conducts against law and order. While the DSS is aware of Government’s efforts and determination to resolve some of the challenges confronting the nation, it warns those desirous of subverting national security to retrace their steps. This is more so that it will not hesitate to legally come against persons and groups behind the devious plans.

The Statement was signed by the Service’s Public Relations Officer; Peter Afunanya, Ph.D, fsi.

Akwa Ibom State Government Sacks Chinese Company Over Illegal Operations

The Akwa Ibom State Government has ordered a Chinese firm, Ruitai, to stop further mining operations in the state until it’s duly cleared by the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources.
The Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Uno Uno, handed down the order during an unscheduled inspection tour of the firm’s mining site, located in Esuk Ikim Akeme community, Ibeno Local Government Area of the state.
The commissioner was accompanied to the site by his counterpart in the Ministry of Internal Security. Brig- Gen. Koko Essien (retd), on Monday.
But speaking during a media interaction with newsmen on Tuesday, Uno said the inspection team discovered black clay-like minerals contained in sack bags of 50 kilogrammes, which the miners identified as Titanium Ore.
He said, “On critical examination of the site amidst tight security, the Managing Director and Director of the company, Zeng Zhonghuan and Huang Ying, were not available at the site. The available staff members could not provide any information or documents.
At the end of the inspection tour, we were able to discover that the company is purely an exploration company. Its Board of Directors comprises only Chinese, thus, not eligible to acquire the Small-scale Mining License as claimed.
“We also discovered that the Company has not conducted the Environmental Impacts Assessment in its mining operations and has not submitted the Environmental Management Plan, among other abnormalities.”
The commissioner said in view of the above anomalies, the inspection team recommended, “That Ruitai Mining Company should terminate its mining operations forthwith until due clearance legitimizing its operations is completed with the state government.
That the Company should approach the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources on or before Friday, 1st September, 2023, with all the relevant papers authorizing its operations, with full coordination of the area approved for its mining operations.”
That all security operatives should be withdrawn from the mining site, while the DPO of Ibeno LGA, SP Victor Ezekwu, should enforce the directive in order to ensure strict compliance,” the statement added.

Another Coup! Military Seize Power in Gabon

Military officers have appeared on national television to say they have seized power in Gabon, after President Ali Bongo was re-elected to a third term in office in the Central African nation.

According to multiple Media sources, the officers said they were annulling the results of Saturday’s election which the opposition had denounced as “fraudulent”.

Twelve soldiers announced that they were dissolving “all the institutions of the republic”.

“We have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the current regime,” one of the soldiers was quoted as saying on TV channel Gabon 24.

The soldier cited “irresponsible, unpredictable governance resulting in a continuing deterioration in social cohesion that risks leading the country into chaos”.

Introducing themselves as members of the Committee of Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), the soldiers also announced closure of the country’s borders.

The Gabonese Election Centre (CGE) had declared Bongo winner of the election on Wednesday with 64.27% of the votes cast.

Michel Bonda, CGE head, said Bongo’s main challenger, Albert Ossa, had polled second with 30.77%.

Bongo’s team have rejected Ossa’s allegations of electoral fraud and irregularities.

Tensions have been running high in Gabon with fears of unrest, following the presidential and parliamentary elections.

A night-time nationwide curfew had been imposed and internet was cut off after the poll.

Bongo’s overthrow would end his family’s 53-year hold on power. He became president when his father Omar died in 2009.

Bongo, 64, suffered a stroke in 2018 which sidelined him for almost a year and led to calls for him to step aside.

In 2019, there was a coup attempt on Bongo where the Soldiers who led the failed Junta were sent to prison.
