He commended Eno for the priority given to the health sector in his A.R.I.S.E. Agenda blueprint and stated the willingness of UUTH to partner with the administration in its quest to deliver on the agenda.

Bassey listed the challenges of UUTH to include a dearth of infrastructure, power generation, inadequate manpower, and poor funding, among others.

Supreme Court Affirms Tinubu’s Victory at the 2023 Presidential Election

The Supreme Court, on Thursday, affirmed the election of President Bola Tinubu with the rejection of the election appeals filed by the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential candidtate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

Atiku and Obi’s appeals commenced on May 8 and were concluded on Thursday, October 26, with the Supreme Court effectively ending their dreams of overturning Tinubu’s election victory, a process that spanned 171 days.

In the lead judgment delivered by the Chairman of the seven-man panel, Justice Inyang Okoro, the apex court refused to consider the academic records of the President obtained from the Chicago State University, which Atiku sought to tender as fresh evidence to prove his allegation of certificate forgery against President Tinubu.

The other justices on the panel-Uwani Aji, Mohammed Garba, Ibrahim Saulawa, Adamu Jauro, Abubakar Tijjani, and Emmanuel Agim, agreed with the lead judgment dismissing Atiku and Obi’s appeals.

Meanwhile President Tinubu welcomed the Supreme Court judgement and sought the support of Nigerians, promising to exceed expectations in service delivery in the remaining years of his administration.

The President lauded the judiciary for withstanding “the fusillade of pressure and attempts at intimidation by some political actors.”

In a statement he signed, Mr. President He said, “The victory of today has further energised and strengthened my commitment to continue to serve all Nigerians of all political persuasions, tribes, and faiths with honour and total respect for the diverse opinions and uniting values of our citizens.

“Our Renewed Hope Agenda for a greater and prosperous Nigeria has further gained momentum, and I will continue to work from morning to night, every single day, to build a country that meets our collective yearnings and aspirations. We are all members of one household, and this moment demands that we continue to work and build our country together.’’

Atiku and Obi had faulted the September 6 ruling of the Presidential Election Petition Court, which prompted the move to the Apex Court in the country.

The PEPC headed by Justice Haruna Tsammani had dismissed their petitions and upheld Tinubu’s electoral victory in the February 25 presidential poll.

Atiku had filed 35 grounds of appeal while Obi filed 51 at the Supreme Court.

To prove the allegation that Tinubu was not qualified to contest the presidential poll, Atiku had asked an Illinois Chicago district court to order the CSU to release the President’s academic records.

The former vice-president accused Tinubu of falsifying the CSU diploma of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration awarded in 1979 that he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the election.

He demanded a copy of any diploma issued by CSU in 1979, a copy of the diploma the CSU gave to Tinubu in 1979, and copies of diplomas with the same font, seal, signatures, and wording awarded to other students that are similar to what CSU awarded to him in 1979.

Atiku’s application was opposed by Tinubu’s lawyers, citing privacy concerns. Still, the United States court ordered the release of the ex-Lagos State governor’s academic records, which Atiku filed in support of his election petition appeal at the Supreme Court.

However, the hope of the former vice-president was dashed by the court, which held that the constitutionally allowed period for such evidence to be admitted had since elapsed.

It stressed that section 285(5) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, expressly gave the PEPC a 180-day lifespan to hear and determine in writing, all petitions arising from the presidential election.

According to the apex court, considering that the PEPC, which sat as the court of first instance in the presidential dispute, had since delivered its verdict, no provision of the law would allow the admittance of any other evidence at the appeal stage.

Aiyedatiwa Apologises to Akeredolu as Impeachment Plot Thickens

The deputy governor of Ondo state, Hon Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has tendered an apology to the State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, over the political crisis in the State which arose from his absence from the State.

Aiyedatiwa, at a press briefing in Akure, lamented the embarrassment and discomfort the Governor has faced due to the barrage of negative news in the State in the last few months.

He pledged his loyalty to the governor and commitment to the development of the State, the Deputy Governor said there was the need to calm all nerves in order to restore peace and tranquility to the Sunshine State.

I am profoundly grateful to Mr. Governor for his intervention and role in persuading the distinguished members of the Ondo State House of Assembly to embrace the political solution offered by our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the face of an impeachment move against me.

“Our beloved state has witnessed a series of events triggered by the health challenges faced by Mr. Governor, which gave rise to misunderstandings, misconceptions, assumptions, and insinuations, and exploited by political contenders preparing for the upcoming 2024 gubernatorial election.

“The recent impeachment attempt by the House of Assembly and the ensuing reactions have further created division and chaos, with my loyalty to Mr. Governor being questioned.

“It is in reference to the above that I hereby tender my unreserved apologies to Mr. Governor and the good people of Ondo state, and I assure that, together, we will both complete this journey with honour, divine guidance and in good health by the grace of God.

The Deputy Governor, who denied all the allegations being peddled against him by those desperate to get rid of him from government ahead of the next election, said he will continue to maintain decorum in the face of those false and baseless accusations.

We have continued to read all sorts of lies against my person in the media. None of it is true.

“There has never been any issue between Mr. Governor and myself and I have never undermined Mr. Governor. This is a fabricated crisis just for the purpose of election.

“I remain fully committed to the principles of good governance that Mr. Governor has established, and I pledge my unwavering loyalty to him and I will continue to submit myself under his able, courageous and selfless leadership”, Aiyedatiwa said.

He also distanced himself from groups and individuals holding protests or calling on the Governor to resign, stressing that he has never commissioned any individual or group to engage in such campaigns.

The deputy Governor thanked the national leadership of the APC for its intervention in the impeachment move against him, pledging his commitment to the reconciliation efforts aimed at restoring peace in the State.

I have a lot of respect for the Speaker and members of the House of Assembly and members of the State Executive Council and I do not hold any grudge.

Aiyedatiwa said ” I want to appeal to all the political actors in the State to allow peace so we can all concentrate on the development of our dear State”.

Federal Government To Stop Salaries of Workers NOT on IPPIS

The Federal Government has confirmed that workers whose names are missing from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) will cease to earn salaries from the end of October.
No fewer than 89,100 workers on the federal payroll were yet to update their records as directed by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) as at October 3 while 780,000 had completed theirs.

In April 2017, OHCDF commenced online registration and physical verification of public servants with the aim of having their names enrolled on the IPPIS platform. The programme, which is meant to curb ghost workers syndrome and block leakages through personnel cost, ends tomorrow.

OHCSF Director of Communications M. A. Ahmed explained that with the expiration of the deadline, government had no choice than to delist all names not found on the IPPIS from its payroll.

Ahmed said: “The office carried out aggressive sensitization and publicity via the official, conventional and social media. An initial period of three (3) months was given for compliance, which was extended to one year, May 2018, to enable all officers to update their records. This was the first phase.

“Sequel to another wide publicity accompanied by numerous pre-verification sensitisation visits by IPPIS staff to ministries, extra-ministerial departments and agencies nationwide, the second phase of the exercise, the physical verification, commenced in 2018.

“In this regard, 500 staff from the OHCSF were trained and deployed, in well-communicated and coordinated phases, to the 36 states of the federation and the FCT(Federal Capital Territory) between 2018 and 2019 to enable officers to carry out the physical verification in their states and save them from travelling to Abuja.

“The OHCSF also conducted a two-week mop-up exercise in the six geo-political zones, which ended on August 1, 2019 to further enable those who missed the first exercise to be effectively captured.

“Teams of officials were also assigned to all unity colleges, in order not to disrupt academic activities. Another opportunity was provided between September 2022 and February 2023 for those who failed to verify their records in the previous exercises to do so.

“Having committed substantial financial and human resources over a period of seven years to verify the records of all civil servants on the IPPIS platform, our office was left with no option than to suspend the salaries of those who failed to participate in the exercise with effect from September 2023.

“Consequent upon this, some of the erring officers besieged the OHCSF with pleas to be given the last opportunity to comply. The portal was, therefore, reopened on October 3 to 13, 2023 to enable them to update their records.

“The officers were then asked to come to Abuja for the physical verification exercise as the office had already committed and exhausted the budgeted funds and was unable to further deploy staff to the states for the exercise.”

The OHCSF spokesman also reacted to the claims by some workers that they encountered difficulties during the verification in the FCT.

He explained that in spite of the fact that officers were disorderly in the first two days of the exercise, the OHCSF still granted a two-week grace that will end tomorrow.

Ahmed said: “It should be noted that the aforementioned officers are the architects of their inconvenience for not being compliant with official directives.

“However, the verification of records of all civil servants will be finalised at the end of the ongoing exercise and any officer whose record could not be verified will be delisted from the payroll of government.”
