I’m Focused on Super Eagles not Zamalek – Jose Peseiro

Super Eagles Head coach, Jose Peseiro, has denied having any links with Egyptian giants, Zamalek concerning their vacant coaching role.

Egyptian website, Kooora, had fingered Peseiroas one of the coaches who submitted their resumes for the top job after the recent sacking of Juan Carlos Osorio for poor results.

The 63-year-old recently signed a new one-year deal with the Nigeria Football Federation after his initial contract expired in June.

The Portuguese tactician, who was recently linked with Zamalek’s job in Egypt, told btolat.com that he remained focused on his current job with Nigeria.

“At the present, all my focus is on the Nigerian national team only,” he said.

“There are no negotiations from Zamalek in any case and I am not thinking about anything else.”

Despite Peseiro’s commitment to the Eagles’ job,  football stakeholders have called for the immediate sacking of the Portuguese tactician following the team’s abysmal performances in the last 2 games. The Eagles were held at home by lowly ranked Lesotho 1-1, and only managed another draw against Zimbabwe in the first 2 games of the FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

Appeal Court Sacks Mutfwang in Plateau

The Court of Appeal in Abuja, yesterday, sacked the governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang.

The court, in a unanimous decision by a three-member panel of justices, held that Mutfwang was not validly nominated and sponsored by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to participate in the March 18 gubernatorial election.

The appellate court held that all votes credited to him and the PDP after the election amounted to a waste.

The Justice Elfrieda Williams-Dawodu-led panel ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the Certificate of Return it issued Mutfwang as winner of the governorship poll.

It also ordered that the candidate that had the second majority lawful votes should be sworn in as governor.

The case followed an appeal against Muftwang’s election by the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda.

INEC had declared that Mutfwang won the gubernatorial contest with 525,299 votes, ahead of Goshwe, who polled 481,370 votes.

Dissatisfied with the outcome of the election, Goshwe had approached the Plateau State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal. He contended, among others, that the PDP lacked a political structure in the state and was, therefore, incapable of validly nominating or sponsoring any candidate for the poll.

He also argued that the election of Mutfwang was not conducted in compliance with the Electoral Act, insisting that the PDP candidate did not win the majority of lawful votes cast during the election.

Mutfwang had, earlier, appealed to people of the state to remain calm in the face of the oncoming ruling.

Labour Shuts Down National Assembly

The National Assembly complex in Abuja has been finally shut down by organised labour groups in protest of the manhandling of the national president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero.

All the gates leading to the National Assembly complex were under lock and key as of 9:00 am today, 15th November, 2023.

However, the Presidential villa gate which connects the National Assembly complex remained open for security personnel and other essential workers.

As at the time of filling in this report, the management of the National Assembly is yet to speak on the matter.

Among those barred from gaining entry into the legislative complex were Journalists, legislative aides, and several members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) who are affiliates of organised labour.

On Tuesday the complex witnessed a partial strike with motorists and staff stranded for several hours.

Atiku Abubakar Calls for Merger to Topple APC in 2027

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has called for a merger of opposition political parties in order to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress; APC.

Atiku, made the call in a statement by his media aide, Paul Ibe, warned against the likelihood of Nigeria slipping into a one-party state.

According to the statement, the former Vice President made the remarks when he hosted the National Executive Committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council Nigeria, IPAC.

He said the project of protecting democracy in Nigeria was not about just one man.

“You have come here today to say that we should cooperate in order to promote democracy. But the truth of the matter is that our democracy is fast becoming a one-party system; and, of course, you know that when we have a one-party system, we should just forget about democracy,” he stated.

Atiku, therefore, tasked the leadership of IPAC, led by its National President, Yabagi Sani, on the need for the opposition political parties to come together and create a more formidable front that will salvage Nigeria’s democracy from sliding into a one-party state.

He said, “We have all seen how the APC is increasingly turning Nigeria into a dictatorship of one party. If we don’t come together to challenge what the ruling party is trying to create, our democracy will suffer for it, and the consequences of it will affect the generations yet unborn.”

Atiku also berated the Independent National Electoral Commission for allegedly conducting the worst general elections in the country.

He stated, “Recently again in the off-season election in three states, INEC doubled down on its disregard for the tenets of our democracy.

“We all can see how INEC declared a result in Kogi State where the total number of votes cast is higher than the total number of accredited voters in one local government. We cannot have a healthy democracy in an environment where all INEC does is to deliver for the ruling party at all costs.

“That is also why I will urge you all to appeal to lawmakers of the various opposition parties in the National Assembly to sponsor legislation that will advance the course of the constitutional and electoral reforms agenda that I shared in my recent press conference. The issue of electronic voting must be the urgent priority of the National Assembly because countries that are far less advanced than Nigeria are already doing it.”
