Governor Umo Eno Receives Reports of Traditional Council Law Amendment

In another Development, Governor UMO ENO has received the report of the committee set up to resolve the deadlock and find lasting solutions to the issues arising from the amended Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers’ Law 2023. 

 

The report was presented to the Governor at the Government House in Uyo, barely two months after he constituted a 7-man committee headed by the Paramount Ruler of Eket, EDIDEM E. C. D. ABIA. 

 

Speaking shortly after receiving the report, Governor UMO ENO assured all of his commitment to study the recommendations made by the committee and thereafter, come up with a draft bill reflecting the true wishes of all parties concerned, which will be forwarded to the State House of Assembly for necessary legislation. 

 

He thanked members of the committee for accepting to serve in the interest of peace, expressing the belief that the report has addressed all the grey areas including issues of rotation of the highest traditional stool, the tenure of the traditional headship as well as the Chairman and President-General of the Traditional Rulers Council.

 

The Presentation of the report was witnessed by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Elder UDEME OTONG, Secretary to the State Government, Prince ENOBONG UWAH, the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, UKO UDOM S.A.N  and a one -time Attorney General in the state, Barr. EKPENYONG NTEKIM, who was counsel to a section of the traditional rulers.

In the meantime, Governor UMO ENO has congratulated President BOLA TINUBU, the leadership of the National Assembly, the Judiciary, Armed Forces and other Nigerians on the occasion of this year’s Democracy Day.

 

In a goodwill message released by his Chief Press Secretary, EKERETE UDOH, Governor UMO ENO said there is no doubt that the country’s democracy has been consolidated, and that the traditions, norms and culture have also been deeply internalized by Nigerians.

 

Governor UMO ENO who called on citizens to pray for the leaders and support them in their determined efforts to bring growth and development to the people, added that even though the country still have many miles to travel, the miles covered so far has given hope for the journey ahead.

 

He stressed that the Akwa Ibom State Government will continue to work tirelessly across party lines to bring democratic dividends to the people, in line with the ARISE Agenda.

Labor Denies Any Agreement with Federal Government Over Minimum Wage

The Organised Labour has rejected President BOLA TINUBU’s claims that an agreement has been reached on new national minimum wages in his nationwide broadcast to mark the 2024 Democracy Day.

 

Recall that TINUBU had claimed that a consensus had been reached on the long-debated new minimum wage between the Federal Government and organised labour.

 

In the national broadcast, the President revealed that an executive bill will soon be sent to the National Assembly to formalisethe new minimum wage agreement, emphasising that his administration chose a democratic approach over dictatorship in addressing the demands of labour unions.

 

However, in a statement, the acting President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Prince ADEWALE ADEYANJUsaid there was no agreement reached by the Tripartite Committee on the National Minimum Wage at the time negotiations ended on Friday, June 7, 2024.
