MDAs to Get Sanctioned for Extra-Budgetary Expenses

The House of Representatives has threatened to sanction any Ministry, Department or Agency of the Federal Government, engaging in extra-budgetary expenses, warning the MDAs to desist from the practice, as it is against the Constitution.

The House gave the warning during an investigative hearing into the activities and expenditure ofMinistry, Department and Agency MDAs by the Committee on Public Procurement.

Addressing Newsmen after the hearing, Chairman of the Committee, Rep. UNYIME IDEM, representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency noted that the Public Procurement Committee discovered that some MDAs are engaging in extra-budgetary expenses, a practice which runs contrary to the Constitution.

Rep IDEM warned that the house will not hesitate to sanction any MDAs, if they continue the practice of spending outside budgetary provisions, stressing that Sections 80 and 81 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, clearly explains that no public funds of the Federation shall be expended, except in the manner prescribed by the National Assembly (Appropriation Act).

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Procurement is empowered by the Constitution to play oversight role on MDAs to ensure their expenditures are in line with budgetary provisions.

House of Reps Pushes for Measures to Combat Flooding Across the Country

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Ministries of Water Resources and Environment to direct the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency to implement measures aimed at preventing flooding across the country.

The House also called on the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, to begin the dredging of the nation’s major dams and rivers to prevent excessive flooding.

It should be recalled that a few weeks ago, heavy flooding claimed lives and destroyed properties in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, and Zamfara states, among others. Federal and state governments, as well as concerned individuals, have since led humanitarian interventions to alleviate the victims’ plight.

The resolutions of the House followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by the lawmaker representing Zaki Federal Constituency, Bauchi State, MOHAMMED SHEHU, who emphasized that dredging Nigeria’s major dams and rivers is crucial to mitigating the devastating impact of floods on farmers and their crops.

EFCC Arrests 21 Suspected Fraudsters in Benin

Operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday September 30, 2024, arrested 24 suspected internet fraudsters at different locations within Benin City.

The suspects were arrested following actionable intelligence of their suspected involvement in computer-related fraud. Items recovered from them include 11 exotic cars,  laptops and phones.

The sum of N160,000.00 (One Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira) was also recovered from one of the suspects.  The suspects have made useful statements and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.

President Tinubu Appoints Joseph Tegbe as DG of Nigeria-China Relations

President BOLA TINUBU has appointed JOSEPH TEGBE as Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China strategic partnership. The development followed a commitment by the two countries to establish hospital alliances and collaborate on medical research.

This was announced in a release bySpecial Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, BAYO ONANUGA, earlier today, noting that TEGBE, a 1988 first-class graduate in civil engineering from ObafemiAwolowo University, will report directly to the President TINUBU.

According to the statement, TEGBE will immediately submit a strategic action plan to enable Nigeria to benefit from the agreements between the two countries in Beijing.

Recall that at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), President XI JINPING pledged about 51 billion dollars, in new financing to African nations in the next three years.

During his official visit before the FOCAC, President TINUBU also obtained a commitment from President XI to support Nigeria’s economic diversification plans, infrastructure development, technology transfer, and job creation.
